This is the feedback thread for the 50 MNers who tested out EdPlace’s online Maths activities and revision materials with their DC. This service test was open to all UK MNers with children who are preparing for their year 6 SATs and need an educational boost in Maths.

All testers were required to complete 20 or more activities across the 4 week period in order to gain the most out of the service in the follow up to SATs, however if you are a regular subscriber to EdPlace you are able to complete as many or as few activities as you like.

Non-testers, in order to to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £150 Amazon voucher, please answer the following question/complete the following statement: What does ‘success’ mean to you? If easier, you can complete the following statement; “Success is seeing my child…”

For the trial, each participant and their DC were required to:

• Complete a minimum of 5 maths activities a week.
  
• Complete an initial and final assessment to measure their progress.
  

Each participant and their DC received:

• A personalised learning journey devised by a tutor.
  
• Access to EdPlace’s English, maths and science subscription with 1000s of online worksheets, assessments, maths tutorial videos and revision materials.
  
• Progress monitoring to ensure they’re on the right track.
  
• Weekly progress reports for the parent to give them visibility to their child’s development and comprehension levels

2. DS enjoyed completing the worksheets to begin with but then started to lose interest after the first couple of weeks. I loved it and will use it with DD (who will be less reluctant).

Overall how satisfied were you with EdPlace?
Potentially this could be useful but either my DDs learning needs were too high for the tests or they don't follow the curriculum. She really struggled with most of the tests and didn't understand the examples unless we did them together which defeats the object! We eventually had to focus on the test practice that was coming home from school rather than EdPlace as it was becoming too much for her in the run up to SATS.

I thought the layout and format seemed quite good but we did have usability issues - possibly related to our slow rural broadband so we lost a few of the tests before she had completed them. As partial tests can't be saved this was a bit frustrating!

1. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?
   

The parents email was quite helpful and where my DD could manage the tests and topic areas she quite enjoyed them!

1. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam?
   

Not as much as I'd hoped because of the compatibility differences with what DD had covered in school. As she struggles quite significantly with maths I was very concerned not to knock her confidence as for quite a few of the tests and for the assessments she got very low scores

1. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member?
   

To a motivated child without any learning difficulties I probably would, but in our experience the examples weren't thorough enough to teach a topic that hasn't previously been covered in school.

1. Overall how satisfied were you with EdPlace?
   

Initially DD was quite excited. Good layout and the badges seemed to motivate her. It was a bonus being able to access the English and Science as well.

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace?
   

Yes when it worked, there were several errors and pages that would not load. We also discovered a few questions where we absolutely gave the correct answer but it was marked wrong which was dispiriting for DD.

1. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?
   

Plenty of options, topics and decent length assessments. Being able to chart progress was very helpful and the ability to see strongest and weakest areas was valuable.

1. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam?
   

I think so, it was the only practice we did in the week or two before as school did not set any.

1. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member?
   

This would be entirely price dependent and based on how often new material was added but on the whole I believe I would.

1. Overall how satisfied were you with EdPlace?
   

I was not impressed. My son is working at greater depth at school and for the first 2 weeks, completed the worksheets easily and most took him about 5 minutes. The ones in the last 2 weeks he found more difficult as he did not understand some of the questions or explanations on how to solve them. Due to this I spoke to my son's teacher who felt that some of the questions are not based on the current curriculum. Also there were no reasoning word problems, something that most children struggle with, with questions where a child has to explain their approach to solving a problem (reasoning being 2 of the 3 the maths SATs papers).

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace?
   

Initially did but over the last week I had to give him an incentive to finish as he said it was boring. He did complete the 10 worksheets each week.

1. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?
   

He liked the badges.

Initially it did but by the end, as the style and questions were unfamiliar, DS actually became upset and worried he was going to be rubbish at his SATS and fail.

Not as SATs revision but maybe for general maths learning if a child was struggling in school.

My daughter absolutely loved EdPlace, she found it really reassuring to check her knowledge and practise the areas which she was less confident about.

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace?
   

My daughter loved it and aiming for badges - which motivated her to do more practise than she otherwise would have wanted to do. I enjoyed seeing how much she enjoyed using it.

1. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?
   

She loved earning badges and she really liked that she could choose to do extra tasks if she was feeling like it and that there was Maths, English and Science to explore.

1. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam?
   

Definitely. It helped to identify the areas where she was more likely to make mistakes, so that she could revisit them and master them. She was much more confident going into her SATs than she had been before using Ed Place.

1. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member? Absolutely, particularly for children who are nervous that they might not have covered all of the aspects that they might need to in class, or if they have weaker areas, which they can practise more to build confidence.

It was ok, I wasn't expecting so many worksheets to be done in the run up to SATs, I think she was given 18 one week. Always a lot more than the at least 5.

Time will tell if it helped her, if she had it earlier in KS2 it might have, or had some verbal reasoning questions.

I wouldn't recommend, too much work too late in the school year.


DD1 didn't enjoy it much, she had to be forced into it with an adult sitting next to her the whole time. If we had got it in Y4 or Y5, my answer would have bern different but she had so much school work in the month before SATs, she found the worksheets as well too much.

She liked getting 100% right most of the time but and quite liked the first week when she only had 10 worksheets.

We were very satisfied with EdPlace my daughter said that it helped her with her Maths SATS and because of it she believes she has scored higher.

I thought it was great and so did my daughter once I convinced her to use it! I think at first she just thought it’d be more homework but once she started using it she loved it and the fact she could do it on her phone really helped.

It was ok. The website is clear, easy to access worksheets. However, in the run up to SATs it was hard to get ds to do them on top of all his school work. At first he did all worksheets set which was a lot. Having been told it would be "at least 5" it was considerably more than that. One week ds didn't finish them all but the next week instead of having the remaining ones plus a couple of extra there were at least 10 more set so he had a huge list which really put him off because he couldn't see how he could possibly do them all (of course I told him he didn't have to do them all and to just do his best).

I found the feedback poor. It was just a message saying which topics his best and worst scores were in. The advert says it is a personalised program but it didn't seem tailored to ds and there was no constructive advice about what he was getting wrong or suggestions about why he might be getting it wrong.

When ds used commas with large numbers it marked them wrong which got him really upset.

I was glad to have the access to extra worksheets, in spite of the above it was useful to have and to get ds doing more in the run up as he really struggles with maths. His first assessment score was abysmal and he did much, much better one the second one and was really chuffed.

1. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?

Ds liked the videos. But he said that a literacy program they use at school automatically takes them through a teaching bit if they made repeated similar mistakes and he thought that would be good here as you can get them wrong and then just ignore it.

I think so, just from repetition but I wouldn't call it personalised tutoring. We will see when we get his results.

Not really. I think you can access worksheets elsewhere for free. Without constructive advice as discussed above it doesn't add anything.

1. We found it a fantastic tool. My Daughter initially got very upset if she got a question incorrect, seeing the ticks/crosses as she moved along helped her to see how she was doing during the assessments. Although we weren't given detailed feedback in our weekly update it was still a good insight in to how she was doing.

3. The simplicity of it, it was easy for my daughter to log on without needing supervision, she enjoyed the videos and earning badges as she went along.
   
   
4. Definitely! It gave her much more confidence, after the second week the change in her attitude from 'I can't do this' to 'I've got this' was pleasing for me. She thought her maths paper 3 would be tricky but after the event thought it wasn't anywhere near as hard as expected.

We were fairly satisfied with the service. There were a few anomalies that caused an answer to be marked incorrect when it was actually right because my daughter had put in a comma in a large number for instance. That was annoying to her.
It was a novelty at first but had to really push her to complete the required sheets at times as she had other homework to do as well.

We enjoyed it most of the time but my daughter was disheartened when correct answers were marked wrong on a few occasions as I explained above.

It encouraged her to word harder on the areas she didn’t score well in. I think she did more work towards SATs than she would’ve done otherwise.

Some aspects were good but I’m not sure I’d want to pay for this service as it didnt seem very personalised.

Overall how satisfied were you with EdPlace?
I hate to be negative and I will be as positive as I can but I wasn’t greatly impressed. My daughter has an low immune system so is often poorly. She has a tutor but I wanted to try Edplae for financial reasons. The first instructions were misleading it said an email would be send daily and this would contain an activity every day. The first email came in with no activities I had to go away on training when I returned on the Thursday the email contain over 10 activities to finish by Friday which was a little overwhelming. Also My older daughter is taking GSES and she has only just learned some of the task herself and said they didn’t match SATs revisions.
My Daughter is poorly and needed to take a break and activities do not save and have to be done again very frustrating . In the 2nd and third weeks there were 40 activities and this is daunting and overwhelming. Also explanations of what was required were somewhat vague at times and didn’t always say if child should round the number up which resulted in wrong answers. Also on one question the example had used + and = signs and when my daughter answered in this format she got every question wrong when the answers were in fact correct, this was very demotivating for her. I tried to email but there was no way to discuss the problem and get her mark changed .
She was unable to complete as she went into hospital but my other daughter did some of the activities and she is doing GCSEs so i dont think my 10 year would have been able to finish it any way.

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace? She did at first but became down and anxious when questions that were correct were wrong and over whelmed by the number of activities. Also it was very repetitive far too many question asking the same thing.

1. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam? No I don’t think it did, as I don’t think it was set at the right level and she became distressed and anxious as she is convinced she is rubbish when its just a flaw in the system .
   
2. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member?
   

Not at the moment in its present format I feel there needs to be some kind of system that parents can interact with a tutor such as a live-chat . A real tutor would have been able to see the answers were indeed correct.

On a 1-10 scale, I would be 6. The emails seem to be computer generated and not very detailed. We had some issues with correct answers being marked as incorrect.

The activities were short and lots of choice.

It’s hard to tell. DS was given a HUGE amount of revision from school. It all got a bit too much towards the end of the trial. But he did see a 20% improvement in his end trial assessment.

I would- but I think it could be improved.

Yes, My daughter found the sheets easy to follow, although she sometimes felt a bit put out when she got the answer right, but had added in a £, which the computer recognised as a wrong answer.

That there were multiple sheets available in varying degrees of difficulty so she could cut her teeth with the easier levels and then challenge herself when she felt ready and the she had grasped a subject

Yes - I think this program really helped with her confidence and making sure that she took the time to read the question properly

Yes, we would. In fact she told her teacher and friends all about it!

On a scale of 1-10 I would say around 6. The instructions in the beginning were misleading and I felt emails were computer generated rather than tutor generated.

There were also times where my son had answered correctly but because he missed a comma the computer marked it as incorrect which my son found frustrating.

Yes, it was easy to use and navigate.

When he got a question wrong, the dialogue box explaining how to do the sum was helpful.

It's hard to say as we struggled to take time out to do some of the activities. School had given so much revision homework and he was also attending extra tutoring. May be if he had joined this programme in the beginning of year 6 this might have helped.

I would but I think the system could be improved. I think there's not enough interaction with parents explaining how I could help my child improve. It wasn't really personalised. Also things like missing a comma etc should have been overlooked. I'm not sure if I would pay to use this service.

It was OK. I felt the questions in a test were too similar and a variety of styles/word problems would be better to help understand a topic. Some of the topics were not relevant to year 6 e.g. converting degrees/minutes/seconds to a decimal.
We used the maths section but could not access the english/science which would have been useful.

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace? DD did at first when she only had 5 tests in a week but very quickly this grew and 1 week she had about 30 tests to do which was very hard to keep on top of in addition to normal homework/ piano practice etc
   
2. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace? I felt it encouraged her to focus a bit more on her maths and it was useful to have it split into topics so I could help on the ones she struggled with. DD felt the question styles were too repetitive. She liked the clear layout.
   

She felt the tutor at the bottom was useful when she got a question wrong but unnecessary for correct answers.

Partly, it was useful to practice some of the topics.

1. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member? It might be useful for some people but I would recommend starting much sooner so it could be a more gradual build up. I think it could have been more personalised to her needs.

1. Overall how satisfied were you with EdPlace?
   

Pretty satisfied. I have no doubt that ds was more engaged with the worksheets than he would have been with the revision sheets provided at school. He often wanted to complete a couple in the mornings before school and again in the afternoon and didn't need much prompting to use it (although in the last week before SATs his enthusiasm did wane, not helped by the massive number of activities set towards the end of the trial period). The reason we'd wanted to do the product test was that Ds' confidence with maths was really low, and am certain that he does indeed feel more confident and has a much better grasp of the maths topics covered.

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace?
   

Yes, the site was clear and well set out. I think it helped ds to see maths in terms of interesting puzzles rather than a confidence-sapping chore.

1. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?
   

The bite-sizedness of the worksheets was great, as was the fact that it was easy for both us and ds to get a sense of his strengths & difficulties. Ds liked that his answers were 'marked' immediately and I think he more readily took on board where he'd gone wrong than if he'd received overall feedback at the end of the worksheet.

1. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam?
   

Before he did EdPlace, ds struggled to complete the practice assessments set at school, leaving numerous questions blank & telling us he was "rubbish" at maths. By the end of the EdPlace trial, he had a totally different outlook and actually went into his SATs with confidence.

A big down side was that there was relatively little prep in EdPlace for the reasoning papers, which require students to work out what calculations & approach are needed, and are often multi-step. We did additional practice for these, so I wouldn't see Ed|Place as sufficient on its own.

1. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member
   

Yes, though not unreservedly.
As well as the downsides mentioned above, the feedback to parents was much more sparse & lacking detail than I'd hoped, so was not particularly useful.

1. Overall how satisfied were you with EdPlace?
I wasn't completely sold on EdPlace sorry. It didn't seem like a tutor experience at all and appeared more computer generated, as did the emails. Also DC has access to mathletics, through the school and at home, where his class teacher sets the tasks from the computer. EdPlace didn't feel superior to it in anyway, which being tutor based I expected it to.
Also some of the questions were difficult to work out from looking on the computer screen, e.g, the graphs and plotting shapes. I also noticed a few tasks explained how to work things out using a calculator, however DC school does not allow calculators, so they didn't benefit him.

2. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace? Tbh DC had to be forced to do the tasks the majority of the time. But I think, perhaps that was down to the timing of the trial. As he had tonnes of homework and after school booster classes in preparation for SATs, so it was stressful trying to fit EdPlace in.

3. What did you and your DC like most about EdPlace?
We both liked that the questions in each task focused on one thing, e.g a set of questions just on fractions, a set just on percentages etc. Also liked that you got the marks straight away and that the correct answers where also shown and explained on the ones he got wrong.

4. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam?
In a small way yes. It helped to give DC a small amount of knowledge of certain things he'd yet to learn in class, and also refreshed the things he'd already learnt in school.

5. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member?
I would probably recommend it if they had concerns that their DC could use a little bit of help at maths. But not if they already had access to mathletics through school.

I was very satisfied with EdPlace, my son had spoke to me of his anxiety of wanting to improve his maths for his SATs so this was the perfect package to help.

1. Did both you and your DC enjoy using EdPlace?
   

Yes, initially he said he was motivated by the aspect of it being online and then as his tests were getting better results he became more motivated to keep practicing.

That it was tailor made and you got weekly feedback. Also that its online not a text book.

Yes for sure! It was having such a positive effect we paid for the English module too.

Yes and i already have recommend it to friends.

Very satisfied. I was very happy with Emplace. It motivated my son and he could get on with it quite happily. It really helped his understanding of Maths and he learned at lot.

My son really enjoyed using EdPlace. I found the feedback clear and understandable.

We liked that the activities were tailored to my son so he could concentrate on his weaknesses.

1. Do you think EdPlace helped get your child ready for their Maths SATs exam?
   

Definitely. He learned things he hadn't covered at school. It reinforced other topics. I always bought workbooks to aid his learning anyway which he had enjoyed, but he liked the computer based learning.

1. Would you recommend EdPlace to a friend or family member?
   

I have already recommended EdPlace to friends. We hope to be using it again in the near future.
