Hedrin Once Spray Gel - feedback thread NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the MNers who have recently experienced head lice in the family and have tried Hedrin Once Spray Gel to blast those little critters!

Here's what Hedrin have to say about their product, "head lice remedies have traditionally required a second application to kill lice that have hatched since the original treatment - where they were protected in the egg. Hedrin Once Spray Gel has been shown, in a clinical trial, to eradicate the infestation of live lice and the un-hatched eggs with a single application. This removes the need for repeat treatments and laborious combing, making the process of managing head lice easier than ever before.

"Hedrin Once Spray Gel is a silicone-based, skin-friendly non-pesticide formula that is pleasant for children and easy for parents to use. The active ingredient, dimeticone, kills lice by blocking the opening to their air tubes and disrupting their ability to manage water. Its physical method of killing head lice prevents them developing a resistance – a common problem with traditional pesticide treatments. Available in Boots and pharmacies nationwide, Hedrin Once is available in a liquid or spray gel format priced from £7.14 for 60ml".

So if you're a tester we'd like you to add feedback to this thread and complete the survey which we emailed to you.

Please note your comments may be used by Hedrin in marketing material, on their website and possibly elsewhere.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
  4. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
  5. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
  6. How effective has this product been?
  7. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

All selected testers who add their feedback on this thread and complete the survey form will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck (with everything Grin)

Daughter 2 years old. I did mine too just in case.
Yes it was her first time.
Application was easy. Though she was not keen on letting me spray it. Took few minutes to apply but had to wait 15 minutes before adding shampoo to it then washing off.
Never used anything else before.
It didn't smell which was positive, the treatments used to when I was a child. Unfortunately it didn't wash out very easily on either her or me, we both looked a bit lank the next day until a second wash.
It did the trick though.
I would definitely use it again but might try the shampoo rather than this which you have to use then wash out...
Thanks so much!

I treated my son, age 5 and daughter, 7 years with Hedrin Once Spray Gel. After the hassle of other lengthy treatments, repeated combing which is a nightmare with DD's long, thick hair, this was an absolute breeze to use. It works very quickly, and it works which is obviously the deal breaker.

It isn't quite the same breeze to wash out (took two goes), but it is still so much easier to use than the other treatments we've tried.

I would recommend the product - blasted the head lice here. I should add that we didn't have particularly bad infestations - and we caught it early.

was a really quick easy solution for my son (aged 4) I felt really uncomfortable when i found out about the headlice and Hedrin was so easy to use and solved the problem straight away , I applied the gel and my son played with his toys in the bath whilst we waited for the treatment to finish, no fuss ,no nasty smells quick and effective . I would not hesitate to use it again and will always have a bottle in the cupboard just in case !

Treated DD(8) and DS(4). The nits love these two. I am a scrupulous wet comber but obviously someone at school isn't, so they have repeatedly had nits since September.

DD has very thick shoulder length hair, and hates having it combed. Very easy to apply - some whinging here about it dripping and feeling greasy on neck but no bad smell so very happy about that. Washed out ok as had taken a tip and applied shampoo before wage, took a bit of doing on DD but ok really. Definitely seems to have nuked them. I will inspect again in a day or two and see if it got the lot or left any stragglers.

  1. Ds1 - 4yrs & ds2 - 14months
  2. Ds1 has been bringing them back from pre-school for about a month now. I found ds2's first live lice last week, so treated him too.
  3. Application is brilliant; loved the little spray bottle, as could target the roots/scalp better (have used lotion before, which tended to sink into my hands a bit before going onto kids' hair/scalp). 15 minutes is great, if it works. Have previously found the 8hr lotion more effective.
  4. Have used Lyclear in the past, as well as a nitty gritty comb. Hedrin spray much quicker to use, which is great when you have a wiggly 14mo to try and comb. My 4yo prefers to be wet combed as he gets to play on the iPad for twenty minutes!
  5. Neither children were bothered about it. It's great that it has no odour. It was however very difficult to remove. Admittedly I forgot about putting shampoo directly onto the head before water with ds2, but both children needed to have another hair wash the next day, as their hair looked greasy and lank.
  6. Only used it a couple of days ago, so will need to check for eggs/lice in a few more days. Hopefully ds1 won't bring new live lice back from pre-school in the meantime.
  7. Definitely - I like the serum-like texture, the ease and the price. Just wish it was a bit easier to remove, but it's a small price to pay if it is effective.

My dh and dd ( M and F ) both used Hedrin and they're 41 and 4.
It's been an ongoing problem for a couple of months, just when we think we've eradicated it, they come back!

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel?

I found applying hedrin very easy, not messy, not smelly and it acted quickly, which really helped.
It took five minutes to apply at the most. I love that it's so fast to use, especially with young children who get bored and cross quickly!
The spray is much easier to apply, less messy, faster acting and the ingredients mean that you know it's going to work. We had used other brands only to find they hadn't worked.
My daughter said she preferred it as it was quicker and my DH said he prefers it as it doesn't make so much mess. (He is really messy!)
This product has been so effective, we can now relax knowing the nits are finally GONE!
Yes I would definitely use this product again and tell everyone about it!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age.

DD 6, DS 3 and myself mid 30s

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

Sadly and frustratingly this is the third bout of this academic year. Tbf we haven't had it before e en though DC have been in some type of nursery/childminder/school since they were 6 months old. And they both have thick, curly and in DD's case long mixed heritage hair.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Took a few mins (3-5) for DS while sitting on DP's lap while watching cbeebies.
Little bit longer at 5-8 mins for DD. I put this down to them having thick hair and having to work it through all the curls ensuring it was covered and wet. The only other slightly annoying thing was the spray bottle didn't miss so much as shoot darts of the gel. For DD I poured it into my hand and massaged it in.
I also covered both kids hair with a disposable shower cap as it did drip onto their necks after 10mins. And we left it on for an hour before shampooing off. I did comb it out as the dead lice didn't wash off just loosened their grip on the hair after death.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Definitely better then Vermousse which stank and took hours to comb out. More successful then wet combing and the homeopathic neem oil we had been using for a month after the second bout.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

They preferred the gel to wet combing and the smell of neem oil. They were quite relieved to have the headline fully vanquished as the combing was ripping us apart as a family. The gel was a little annoying to them when it dripped on their faces and necks (and it left a stain on our leather chair after DD leaned back before I'd had the brainstorm to put a shower cap on her.) But they both said they would rather use it if the lice come back compared to anything else we've tried.

  1. How effective has this been?

It was effective. I did do a second course a week later as I was thoroughly sick of all the combing, washing of bed linen and towels and itchy scalps.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes. Certainly quicker, less smelly and more effective then wet combing and at least one other commonly used medication. Even opted to buy some of the head lice deterrent spray even though other reviews have not been that praiseworthy.

Dd(8)
Nits since September(tired of parents that don't treat their kids)
Took five minutes to apply. Love the spray bottle, usually use the one that you apply to the child's head like vinegar on chips. Liked that it only had to be on fifteen minutes.
Absolute swine to remove from hair. Tried three shampoos and hair still looked greasy. No smell.
Dd says she liked that it was sprayed on and it didn't have to be on for long. She said it was a nightmare to get off!
No nits spotted three days in.
Would use again as it was so easy to use. Would like further tips on how to remove it from hair!

Was pretty pleased to be picked to use Hedrin's Once Spray Gel as my four year old son has had lots of problems with head lice since starting school in September. I would say he must have had it 5 or 6 times although I'm not sure if we just never got fully on top of it. The idea of a spray instead of a lotion or shampoo was pretty appealing as it was much quicker and a bit more novel for my son. It must of only taken us about 5 minutes max to apply. It seems to be so far so good as no scratching up to now and nothing showing with the nitty gritty comb. Will most probably buy from now on, my only slight criticism being it's a little hard to wash out. However much easier than some others.

Ds 7 yr
Parents. Combing only every morning in shower with nitty gritty

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

No. A couple of times

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Application was the easiest bit. No problem even on my dd long hair. Ds was even easier. Only took a few minutes.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

No smell
No dripping
Very simple application
No combing unless you wanted too. Joy!

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

They didn't complain about anything. Better than the laborious combing every 2/3 days we had been doing.

  1. How effective has this product been?

No more scratching. Seems to have worked

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes It was very easy. I would try combing first though to save myself the cash. This time my dds were not shifting so I applied for the trial.

I found it harder to remove then put on and my Ds had to have two removal sessions. I don't think I used enough shampoo first time.
With dd I was very liberal with a tea tree shampoo and removed first go.

Thank you hedrin.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

Me (43, F) and dd (13)

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

We have both had them many times. I work in a primary school and they're an occupational hazard.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

About 3mins for me (short hair) and 5 for dd, whose hair is very thick. Her hair used a whole spray plus what was left of mine (to be on the safe side!).

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Usually I wet comb with nitty gritty comb and conditioner. Dd's hair takes ages, because it's so thick, so she moans. This was much better. I'm never sure I do a good job wet combing my own hair, so I felt reassured that the Hedrin was working its magic with minimal skill required from me.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

She liked the (lack of) smell. She could read or watch tv whilst it was working so she was happy. The washing out took some time though - next time I'll buy some cheap shampoo for the job so I'm not using half a bottle of my best shampoo!

  1. How effective has this product been?

Great, no more itching, and I did enjoy combing out the little blighters. I'll comb again in a few days to check all the eggs did indeed die.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes indeed!

My 14 year old daughter, and I did mine at the same time.

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

She used to get it a lot when she was in primary school, but we'd been nit free for about six years until now!

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

It was very easy and quick to use. I sprayed it on the scalp only, and massaged it through.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Very easy and quick. It's great to have something that doesn't need leaving on overnight. Also seemed to be a lot more effective than the other treatment we used.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought.

She commented that it smelled OK/had little smell to it, and was also pleased not to use it overnight.

  1. How effective has this product been?

It seems to have been very effective. I could see the lice coming out when I rinsed the hair (fortunately mine seemed to be clear!), and more came out when we combed the hair through, but they were all dead.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice? Yes, absolutely!

Top tip: use LOADS of shampoo when you wash it off. Like handfuls of the stuff. This got most of the Hedrin out, and we just did a "normal" hair wash with the second wash, and it lathered as usual.

Very quick and easy to apply the gel, 10 minutes each on long hair.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Good, as it didn't have a strong smell, and was easy to apply.

To be honest, my daughter hates having her hair washed, brushed or anything. I was dreading applying the gel, but it wasn't as bad as I'd feared, as it was fairly quick and easy to apply.

  1. Ds 15 months and Dd 11 years.

  1. Ds has had the twice. Dd atleast 4 times a year since reception.

  1. It being in a spray bottle made this very easy to direct to the roots and tips, especially on a wriggling baby's head. I also didn't get AS covered in it as I usually do! Ds had thin shoulder lenght hair and this took me least 5 min to apply as he hates having his hair played with. Dd has thick but length hair and this took me about 8-10 min as she cooperated!

  1. This works quicker than most and definitely killed them all and very quickly. lyclear was like a normal shampoo is comparison!!

  1. Ds found this less distressing as I could use.normal shampoo to wash it out. We Used lyclear in the past and this irritated his skin. Dd liked the speed and said her hair was conditioned beautifully afterwards.

  1. It has done what is says on the box. All dead quickly and easily. Didn't irritate anyone's skin and was hassle free. The real test will be if all the eggs are dead too. I used with a nitty gritty comb and are not expecting there too he any left anyway.

  1. Yes, I would definitely use this again.

For those having trouble washing it out this is what we did.

Buy a cheap bottle of shampoo for use on greasy hair. Apply before you get the hair wet, paying as they say attention to the roots. Then blow dry the roots, lather and rinse again. Repeat if necessary. I had to do my Dd roots 3 times. Don't condition it either! I think the effectiveness of the product is worth the extra time spent washing and rinsing. As long as you know it will need rinsing more than once and can factor the time in, it doesn't bother me as it still quicker that other treatments.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

DD 13, DD 10, DS 9, DD 3

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

There are not enough fingers and toes in the world to count. I dont think we get a day in term time where someone doesnt have them. :(

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

DD 2 has waist length hair, hers took a while to do but the others were fine, a few minutes each and they were saturated. The only issue I had was holding the comb once the gel was on my fingers, it kept slipping out! Very easy and efficient to apply though.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

It was less time consuming than just wet combing. Obviously I had to comb through but that was to get rid of the dead lice rather than trying catch the live lice in the comb so I didnt have to be quite so thorough.
I would keep up wet combing in between treatments though, as a preventative to them taking hold again.
One big bonus is that it doesnt really smell. Some of the traditional treatments absolutely stink and the shampooey ones have a funny smell too. With the gel there was barely any perceptible smell while it was on and none at all after washing/conditioning.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

DD (aged 3) wasnt keen, she said her hair felt funny, but couldnt provide more information than that! The others were fine with it, anything that means an end to hour long combing sessions is fine with them. Removing it was easy enough, if you read the instructions and put the shampoo on before wetting the hair. DH, who was "helping" did not read the instructions, or listen to me when I reminded him, so 8 washes and half a bottle of shampoo later, we finally got it out of DD2's hair (the waist length hair.....) Perhaps you could put that in big red letters on the box, bottle, instructions, my bathroom wall....?!

  1. How effective has this product been?

It appears to have been very effective. We had quite an infestation, more than I thought so I will be treating again after 7 days (this weekend) to ensure we kill them off completely

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes, but having priced it up, its only something I would use if they got a bad case. Its quite expensive so not cost effective to use every time they pick them up, I would use in conjunction with twice weekly wet combing.

It took about 6 mins to apply. It was easier to apply then I thought it would be (DD has very thick and long hair). The spray bottle works well.

This is the first treatment we have ever used other than the wet combing, but can definitely say that it works better than just the combing.

DD2 aged 8 seems to be the only one who is picking up head lice at the moment thank god

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

This is the second time ever but also the second time in the last month so Im guessing I didn't eradicate them the first time and the eggs must have hatched.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

The spray gel was so easy to apply and easy to make sure the hair and scalp were covered. Took less than 10 mins of spraying and rubbing to make sure it got right through to the sacalp.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

I've only used Hedrin 4.0 before and this was so much easier to control where the gel went. Easier to make sure the hair was covered as any dry patches could just be sprayed as opposed to pouring gel into my hand from the bottle and having it drip everywhere!
Much harder to shampoo this gel out. Took more than 2 goes of dry shampooing.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

They didn't mind the gel they just hate the rubbing in. Dd2 has a particularly sensitive scalp and can't bare anyone touching her hair normally but she has endured it for the greater good Wink
She hated the dry shampooing to get the gel out but didn't have any choice obviously! Her hair still looked lanky 3 days later but it's a small price to pay.

  1. How effective has this product been?

No more scratching since the application but Im nervous that i haven't killed all the eggs. It's nigh on impossible to get all those sticky eggs out of her hair so I'm dreading them hatching in about a weeks time.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had head lice?

I will definitely use this again as it's so easy to apply. Even if the eggs aren't killed I'll still use it again. Even though I can get the other Hedrin treatment free on the Minor Ailments Scheme, I'll still use this one and pay for it!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

Me (39 years old) and Ds (7 years old)

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

First time for DS, I had head lice numerous times when I was a child. Far too many to count.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Proces was fine. Easy to use the spray gel. Took a total of about 5 minutes to spray onto DS' head took about 7 minutes to do mine as it is longer and I was doing it to my own head.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

I've never had to use anything on DS in the past as this was his first contaomination.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

He didn't mind the gel. I gave him a bath bomb to play science with to distract him. I had to shampoo and rinse out about 4 times through (very thick hair) and he didn't like that.

  1. How effective has this product been?

Very effective. No further lice and its been enarly a week.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Absolutely, yes. Very quick and easy and, more importantly, it works.
