suprised as this will affect us
wonder if they will all be allowed over here now.
can we keep taking all these people, considering the goverment is talking about cutting education due to lack of money. it isn't like they are fleeing a war torn country.

And there was me thinking Afghanistan was a war-torn country

How do we know they're not fleeing a war torn country? Do we have access to their backgrounds?

I'm not sure about this actually.

"All these people" hysteria - wonder how many immigrants do contribute to our economy by working bloody hard once they're here.

HeadFairy · 22/09/2009 09:03

I thought quite a few of the remainder were Afghans... that's pretty war torn as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure how it should be dealt with, I feel terribly sorry for these people, if living in terribly squalid conditions thousands of miles from home and family is better than home, then home must be pretty shit. I think there needs to be a more cohesive policy among all the EU countries...

Did you not read the article, then?
Here's a quote that answers your question:

"Britain has ruled out taking them in, and Mr Johnson said genuine refugees should apply for asylum in the country where they entered the EU.

Speaking after talks in Brussels with his French counterpart Eric Besson on Monday, Mr Johnson said reports that Britain could be "forced" to take illegal immigrants were "wrong". "

they are all going into detention aren't they, then being sent off back to port of entry. i heard a r4 report on that camp, they said it was hellish.

Erm... Did you read the report? They say that the immigrants are mainly Afghans? I believe one could say they are fleeing a war...

150 people - many of them children! It's hardly the end of the world. I don't see why UK should take them all, or Greece for that matter. Rehoming this number of people within the EU should not really be huge problem.

"it isn't like they are fleeing a war torn country"

But they are - Afghanistan?

I am having trouble with EVERY sentence of your OP, 2shoes, and how it might relate to the article.
EVERY assumption you have made is not backed up by the link you posted.

Why does it affect us?
The article says directly they won't be allowed over here.
If the last sentence is true, then your next sentence is irrelevant.
Afghanistan is war-torn.

Blimey.

yes they were calling them 'men' on the news earlier, but a lot of them aren't.

i saw some people living in bushes in a park the other day.

i think this is so awful, fathers and sons being split up. it's inhumane how the french are going about this.

reminds me of district 9

On the radio this morning they said quite a few of the refugees were very very vulnerable, not just children, but women who are rape and torture survivors. I think we need to show these people compassion. That doesn't mean opening our doors unquestioningly, but I also don't think that means passing them off to someone else to deal with like so much garbage. Where is the EU on all this?

Report
MmeLindt · 22/09/2009 09:14

All these people? 150 according to the article.

It isn't like they are fleeing a war torn county? Many of the from Afghanistan.

WFT?

They are a couple of hundred people living in dreadful conditions, who were scammed out of their last savings to come to Europe. Many of their family/friends did not survive the inhumane transport organised by smugglers devoid of scruples.

Surely our countries are not in such bad state that we cannot afford to help these people? Do we really grudge them that?

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 22/09/2009 09:14

But you do wonder how many countries these people go through before getting to England - that are not affected by war - why not stay in holland, germany, france - why get the ferry over here? [genuine question]

Report
MmeLindt · 22/09/2009 09:16

Lifeinagoldfishbowl
The same question is posed in Germany. Why do the immigrants come to Germany instead of staying in France/Italy/Spain.

Perhaps they have relatives in UK, perhaps they have been told that the British treat immigrants better than elsewhere.

Report
Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 22/09/2009 09:18

Because Brits are so compassionate

That's not aimed at you, lifeinagoldfisbowl , just at life in general that leaves these people no other choice.

Report
HeadFairy · 22/09/2009 09:20

MmeLindt is right in that many have family already here, but also we're only getting half the story here. Italy has a huge problem with illegal immigrants, as does France and Spain with immigrants coming from North Africa. It's a problem across Europe. Italy took far more immigrants last year than the UK, but we don't get that news here. That's why I think we need a Europe wide solution.

unless I have missed some thing FRANCE is not a war torn country, that is where these people are.

Erm....They are in France at the moment not in Afghanistan.

I understood that as refugees they are supposed to claim refuge in the first country that they enter?

It is a really horrible situation. They have obviously fled something terrible and are trying to establish a better life for themselves and their families. As Headfairy pointed out imagine what they have fled to prefer living in the conditions that they currently are.

I think what France is doing at the moment is despicable. These are desperate people and i do not thing that any of us can imagine the position that they are in and what they have seen. They need help.

After reading the comments from the daily mail readers i am not sure who should be more ashamed - them or the French government.
