HELP High grade - Colposcopy

Hi all, I've just had my smear test results and the dr said that is has come back high grade abnormal cells and I have an appointment next Thursday at colposcopy. I am absolutely terrified. Please could someone reassure me?

I have never been to colposcopy before and have only ever had normal smears.

It couldn't have come at a worst time as I've just finished a medical trial for recurrent miscarriage and we were finally hopeful about trying again this month after a year of interventions, testing and two womb biopsies. I'm so scared that I have cancer and just completely heartbroken that I'm facing yet another obstacle to getting our longed for baby in our arms.

It is statistically unlikely that you have cancer, most cervical cancer is fairly slow growing and having had womb biopsies they will have seen your cervix for access to your womb.

The nurses that run the colposcopy clinic are lovely and very reassuring. One usually holds your hand and chats to you so that you are put at ease whilst the procedure is going on.

I have had this, I had CIN3 cells and went for a colposcopy. They managed to remove the cells quite easily at the first appointment via a large loop excision which was painless. I only spotted for a couple of days after.

I had to have smears every 6 months for about three years and then yearly for a while but never had any issues since.

The worry is the worst thing but as the above poster says, cancer of this type is unlikely as testing is so good.

I've had this too, it's quite common I've been told. I had a colposcopy about 20 years ago and have had nothing but normal smears since.

I also had a baby about 3 years after the treatment, no complications during the pregnancy, so it shouldn't have any impact on your chances of having a baby (they may ask you to use contraception for a couple of months, I can't remember exactly what the advise was as it's been so many years)

Thanks so much all, you're helping to put my mind at rest. I just want to get it over with and ashamed to say I've spent the last day in tears on and off with worry and disappointment. Sad
