For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

Right well I have been seriously uninspired last week as mentioned, and have a bit of a cold so am not up to any exercise. However I have had apple, pear, soya milk, raisins and about 3 minneolas for breakfast.

I need to have a moan about my veg box. We are ordering vast amounts of fruit but I am still having to go to the greengrocers as there are not enough apples and pears. We have another citrus mountain and about 20 bright green bananas. I cannot see us continuing with this particular farm for very long tbh They are very rigid about what you get, and atm don't update their website so you never know what it is you are getting.

Update on the gym: I hadn't been for 2 months so was expecting to be absolutely crap, however I had only really slipped back a bit on my weights. The PT said it would have given my muscles a good rest The cardio stuff was fearful though and I could not be arsed to do anything near what I used to. I also had no music so was bored as anything.

ok I have a plea

can you all, for the love of MN, PLEASE get me to go to the gym? Somehow?

I have a cold AGAIN but ffs this is getting ridiculous

oh and

do the fruit/veg count if they are a bit....old? as in leftover soup etc?

FrannyandZooey · 12/03/2007 09:12

I did try Filly but the others were adamant that you shouldn't go as you hate it

Do you want to do competitive gym going, and we will slog it out this week and see who can do more or something sad like that?

I have cold as well so am not going to be fearsome opponent

yes veg in soup counts, the fibre etc is all still there

HI Franny, yep, the soup really should have been called fartichoke soup, tres troll.
Glad that you made it back to the gym, and it sounds like it wont take you long to get back to full strenght. (she says, not really understanding how they work, but knowing they are all the rage ) Great title btw,.
Filly, go to the gym , I like T-rex btw but some us can't affor the gym, weep weep
Feeling really shite today, I have to say, so who know how it will pan out in terms of consumption.
Btw, might be going into hospital for that operation tomorrow, but I wont hold my breath

All in one pan is the difficult bit I think your cauliflowers can be steamed with the carrots and parnsips ( all chopped up really small), for 10 mins Cauli, 15 carrots and 25 for the parnips. Plus potatoes if you want, steam them for 20 minutes.
Then saute with some butter or oil, add some cumin or some similar spice,or paprika. Maybe some chopped parsley. A bit of parsley on top? Squeeshing a lemon on this lot as you finish it off might work. Or add a couple of tablespoons of veg stock, and reduce it down to a nice sticky mess
I think the beetroot would just over power this completely. Can't you steam/boil this seperately and then grate as an accompaniment?
Best I can do I'm afraid

Or you could steam as above, but cut into thin slices and layer up in pretty colours in a gratin dish, and then pour over a little bit of veg stock just to come to the top of the veg, and then grate cheese on top (you could crumble some breadcrumbs with teh cheese for a crunchy finish or add nuts.
btw, I would fry up some onion and garlic if you have some and then put a little bit of this between each layer.

Hello!
Been doing quite well, things are looking up- might be something to do with spring! Veggie soup for lunch. Yesterday I made marinated paprika from a recipe I got off the telly so I will be having that with salad later. Plenty of fruit between meals, too, and yesterday I walked 15kms. The spicy veg sounds good, Overrun.

Sorry you're feeling shite, though, and fingers crossed for the operation. Congrats on gym, F and Z.

Sauerkraut, marinated paprika

Overrun thanks for the ideas and sorry I totally missed the thing about your operation. What have they said? Be ready to come in.....perhaps??? How are you feeling now it is imminent?

Do you think if I just steamed all the veg (sans beetroot, I totally agree) and put a cheese sauce and then the cheesy crumbs / nuts on top, dp would be fooled that it was a new recipe, or would he just say "Oh. Cauliflower cheese with potatoes in "

Franny, the steamed veg with cheese sauce sounds nice, and comforting As for the op, it has been rescheduled for the 5th time, so I am not holding my breath that it will actually go ahead. If you don't hear from me for a few days, you can assume that it happened

How long will the recovery be do you think Overrun?

I am hoping for you that it finally goes ahead. They have internet access in hospitals sometimes now you know, so no excuse for slacking

OMG have you got loads of fruit to take in with you??? The food is so desperately bad from what I remember

Dh will probably bring me some grapes I hope I will only be in two days, so I am not too worried about the food. There is a 2 week recovery time, so I will have a cast iron excuse for not doing exercise

Hello Filly, have you still not got any one in then. I did try and find your thread about it, so that I knew exactly what had happened to your ceiling, I was thinking that my sister had part of her ceiling leaking and in danger of coming down. I could ask her if that sounds similar.
As for my Op. I have a vascular condition, and one of the symptoms of it are severe varicose veins. They are going to try and tie up some of the valves. They are not hopeful, which is another reason why the whole thing is getting me down. Still, I originally thought it was worth a go, so we will see how it pans out, once I actually have it

Welcome Sarz -
Um Celeriac, well you can roast it, or make celeriac remoulade (grated with mustard mayo basically), you can mash it. Its good for soup, I like cauliflower and celeric soup, or just celeriac and celery soup.
Can't think of any more for now, but will try and come up with some more for you

Hello
Didn't do to bad last week but forgot to post on thread!
Been having salad a lot in the evenings. And salad in pitta for lunch sometimes too.

I did try hummus (or however its spelt!) and i really didn't like it but at least i can say ive tried it!

My exercise this week (as long as weather stays sunny) is to dig all the weeds out of the bottom half of my garden. It is quite a big area and will take a while but i really want to get it cleared and grass seed it if possible.
