Would anyone like to join me on a nit busting thread?

We are at the moment a completely nit free family - confirmed by the hairdresser yesterday - and I want us to stay that way! My ds is 8 and he is a complete nit-magnet - lice and all other biting insects make a bee line for him, What normally happens is that I notice ds scratching, but because we're busy/disorganized, I don't deal with it straight away, so by the weekend they've spread to one or more of the rest of us, so it becomes a major chore.

This year, I am planning to nitty gritty comb the dcs with conditioner every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning in front of the TV. I'll do myself on Wednesday too after they've gone to bed and sometime on Saturday. Dp can do himself every morning in the shower - he has short hair so it's easy for him.

Anybody want to join me? I quite like the idea of a community of Mumsnet monkeys all simultaneously picking parasites out of their childrens' fur!

We've hopefully left the nit time behind.

I would advise that you drench the hair in conditioner and nit comb it twice a week, that should keep the little buggars away.

Can't we just have a national nit day, where every person in the entire nation is treated, thus eradicating lice in Britain?

Put a stop to people entering/leaving these shores and the problem will be vanished forever

I'll join in, though currently not nit free. We are combing like mad every night with nitty gritty and they are decreasing. 2nd dose of Hedrin on Friday as well.

I'll join but do I have do it twice weekly? Would once be ok? I usually only wash DD's hair once a week, it's long and thick and the thought of nitty grittying twice a week makes me feel weak.

Maybe twice a week is an excess of zeal! I just thought it would prevent the nit magnets passing them on to other members of the family. And if you miss an egg a week is long enough for it to have hatched and laid more, while twice a week means that they never get old enough to lay eggs.

How about definitely once a week, twice if possible and check back each Monday morning to say we've done it?

Are they hermaphrodites? Are they born with eggs pre-laid within them? Do they have to mate with another louse to be able to then lay eggs? Because if I only miss one louse in her hair when I comb or pesticide then how will that one louse, on it's own, procreate and continue the infestation?

I feel I need to know more about the enemy.

I have an electronic comb that electrocutes the little buggers. No chemicals, and quick to use!

Have daily combed with nitty gritty, and have done 1 treatment with full marks so far. Can't face another one as it left our hair so horrible for about a week, but may have to!

my kids have constant nits for a year! no matter what i do, but recently moved out of infested area so hopefully no more problems, but wil be doing the combing thing monday,tuesday, wednesday,thursday,friday and saturday may have a break sunday.

they are disgusting in all the 13 years i have had children i have never seen as many nits, and the previous(nit infested) school didnt seem bothered at all.

In my defence the little brat (as DD is henceforth known) ignored me and went to gym club (very long and angry rant there which we won't go into), but as a result, bath didn't happen.
