Twins if that makes a difference.

Just trying to work out how unusual this is!

Thanks in advance

Well I don't know of any in our group of acquaintances.
But I don't know any twins either! I suspect twins can make a difference especially if they were premature or had any complications.
I would consider it to be unusual unless the child had other problems.

DS didn't potty train until 3 years 6 months!
He just wasn't ready before, got it very quickly with few accidents.

My nephews were both after 3 (but can't remember how much over) and my ds is 2.6 and showing no signs whatsoever of being ready.

DD1 Smile. She is now and she is 3 yo 11 mo.

DD is only just potty trained at 3yrs 10months. She simply wasn't ready before then, despite several attempts from me to encourage it. Her nursery were very supportive and we got there in the end.

I know one that age that fits the description.

My DS didn't potty train until 3.6yrs. We had tried nearly a year earlier and it was a complete disaster. But he was ready when we tried again, and it was all done very quickly and easily. Don't worry - they all do it in their own time.

Just my friends twin boys, they were 4.4 and still having some accidents.

Report

No twin experience, but oldest ds continued to have accidents and wear pull-ups at night all the way through to 6 yrs. We had many false starts, now I wish I had not bothered until he was ready. Youngest ds got it in the blink of an eye at 2.6.

Same as lifesentence. My DD just wasn't ready, but I was SO ready ;) She is nearly 10, and she can still have occasional night accidents.

It's really important to wait until they are ready even if the pre school etc. will want them to potty train as early as possible.

Two in my extended family.

My own dd trained quite early - about 18 months ish but my ds is coming up to 2.5 and has absolutely no interest in it whatsoever and doesn't even want to sit on the potty or toilet so it'll be ages yet.

I think they get it when they want to.

None at the moment but when i was a nursery nurse around 9 years ago i worked in the pre school room. It was common to see a child just over 3 in nappies. In around 20 3-4 year olds, around 6 would not be toilet trained.

DS1 finally got it over last christmas and this new year, aged very nearly 3y4m. It was his fourth attempt and I did, I'm afraid, just force it through (using christmas chocolate as a massive bribe) because he was just ridiculously resistant to the whole thing and I was really fed up Blush

It worked, but I wouldn't recommend it as I will no doubt be shouted down by everybody else on the thread.

I know plenty including DS who pooed in his nappies until he was 4.10. and went from that to complete indepence (effective wiping with the right amount of paper, flushing, unprompted hand washing) in less than 24 hours.

I only PT DD at 3.4. She was being a pain about it until that point so I left it until we were off over Xmas. If it had been a while to Xmas I would have left it a bit longer.

My ds2.
Was trained at 3.5 and was dry day and night within 3 days.

I don't know any and I work with 2-4 year olds
Ime of 20+ years working with preschoolers there is at least one child still in nappies at 3 years old in each cohort

My DD1 was wearing pants at that age but having a lot of accidents.

There were 2 underlying problems. 1 was undiagnosed lactose intolerance and the other that I think might have been related is sensory processing difficulties.

Report
TeWiSavesTheDay · 07/11/2014 17:42

Weirdly DD1 who was a nightmare to train in the day has never ever wet the bed from about 2.8 when she refused to wear nappies at night, whereas DS who trained easily at 2.5 has night accidents every couple of months.

Every child is different!

Thankyou all, I feel much better! I am leaving them until they are ready to do it themselves however today I had some comments which made me wobble!

Thanks

Ds potty trained earlier this year at exactly 3y4months. Was dry day and night within a week withnonly a couple of accidents.
He wasn't the last in his nursery class either.
He went from being totally disinterested to ready in the space of a few days so things can change v quickly
Good luck with it all x

DS1 was about 3.6 when he was reliably potty trained. DS2 is 2.11 and only just got it (in the last week or two).
