How would you pronounce the name Elea? It is more commonly used in France (my husband is French) and we were thinking of using it, but would people pronounce it El-EE-a (Elia) which is more commonly a boys name?

Is it El-eh-ah ?

Youvegotafriendinme · 20/06/2021 06:40

I’d pronounce it EL-E-AH

Leeloo1233 · 20/06/2021 06:43

The french pronounciation is El-eh-ah. Would it sound like a girl name to you even though pronounced El-E-AH?

It sounds like Leah with an E in front of it

So E-Leah

Orangedaisy · 20/06/2021 06:58

E lay arr

ScissorsBike · 20/06/2021 07:05

A little bit like Elmlea

cariadlet · 20/06/2021 07:09

I've never seen or heard of the name so would ask how to pronounce it.

Terrazzo · 20/06/2021 07:13

Upon reading the title I thought it was a different spelling of Ellie. So initially I pronounced it El-ea. Ellie.

Or Ee-lee, el-ay-ah, eh-leah.

But then I thought Elias was el-EYE-a not el-EE-ah 😄

I think it has many more pronounciation issues than most other names.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/06/2021 07:14

If I had to guess I would say El-EE-a

Leeloo1233 · 20/06/2021 07:15

Hmm interesting, definitely seems to be a bit problematic..

At first glance I saw it as Flea. Others might too.

Pinchoftums · 20/06/2021 07:17

I know an Eliya pronounced the same. Took a while not to say Aliya as I know one of them but I'm a bit thick and can mix up most names that are even a little bit similar.

Terrazzo · 20/06/2021 07:18

How do you want it pronounced though? Like elaya? People should only need to be told once (but sadly that’s not always the case. My kid is 6 and family still call him the wrong name sometimes! Elderly though so let them off!)

cocoloco987 · 20/06/2021 08:08

El- ee like flea or the name Lea which is pronounced Lee not Le- ah

cocoloco987 · 20/06/2021 08:11

Yes me too, which is why i used it as a pronunciation example

EssentialHummus · 20/06/2021 08:39

Without knowing I'd say Eh-Lee-Ah. The thing is OP, you introduce your kid once and people cope with an unusual pronunciation. It's really fine imo. It's not like you've taken Mary and pronounced it John; it's an unusual name in the UK so you can quickly correct people's assumptions.

Posieandpip · 20/06/2021 10:32

El-ee-uh.

It does look a bit product-y to me though. Sorry

lemonsyellow · 20/06/2021 10:59

Shouldn’t it have an an accent, though?

HelloWorld2577 · 21/06/2021 19:26

I would say ell eee ah. Love it

KirstenBlest · 21/06/2021 20:09

It looks like it wouldd be Ellie-ah or Ee-lee
