How do you decide which baby gets which name?

I don't know why this has suddenly occurred to me, but I'm curious.

For me I would probably have decided before the birth that the eldest twin was x and the younger twin was y. And then, probably change my mind as soon as I laid eyes on said babies!

I have GG twins and dp chose a name as did I and luckily we liked each others choices. Our twins had those names in the womb, from early on, and I was always in no doubt who was who- they were on a different side and named twin 1 and 2 in all the scans... I've a feeling we gave the longer name to the bigger twin ( in the womb) and the smaller twin got the shorter name which is a very short name with very " little " connotations... think Minnie etc. Funnily enough, weedy littler twin is now significantly taller and bigger than her twin sister who was a biggish chubby baby but now a dainty little thing!

We have non id girls and picked names quite early on in pregnancy. Hospital always referred to them as Twin 1 and Twin 2, and we decided that T1 was ‘x’ and T2 was ‘y’. Somehow that worked really well, especially since the one with my MIL’s name as her middle name is the spit of her. She was long deceased before they came along but we’re pretty sure she’s made sure she’s still around!!

We decided before birth. One of the names just seemed more suited to twin 2 for some reason!

Not been in the position myself but someone I know with twin girls gave the second born child the name with the first initial alphabetically.

E.g. first born was named Sophie and second born Alice. Sophie will always be older but the girls tend to be known as Alice and Sophie, so the first born doesn't always come first, if that makes sense.

That's sweet. One of mine has her grandfather on her dad's sides eyes, darkest brown almost black. No one else in the family has them, and as he passed many years ago, I never even met him, it's a lovely to think she has a part of him.

We picked 4 names as didn't know if we were having boys or girls. We waited until they were both born and had a good look at them and decided which name went with which baby! They really suit their names I think so we chose well, I can't imagine them being the other way round.

The first twin out was named the name lower in the alphabet, in our case S. And the second twin born was named the name nearer the start of the alphabet, in our case C. The logic behind it is that the 'younger' twin comes first sometimes, for instance in the school register. Possibly overthinking things, but it was as logical a reason as any other for choosing who got named what.

@QueryA I did the exact same thing, with the same reasoning as you. And funnily, my twins' initials are C and S as well! :)

Exactly the same as @QueryA so twin 2 could sometimes come first in some things.

We only ever planned on having one child and picked the perfect name long before I was even pregnant. Then of course it was twins, so we had to think of another name too, but it was always in our minds that the first one would have the long-chosen name. But when they were born DH thought that T2 suited the name better so he got it, and T1 got the "new" name.

We used to make up daft songs with their names in them, some lines rhyming with "X and Y", some with "Y and X", with the result that no-one ever got in the habit of saying the same name first.

We had boy/boy fraternal twins and had picked one boy’s name out years ago. When they arrived twin 2 (the smallest & youngest) suited the name perfectly.
We struggled with twin 1 as he looked so different to his brother and older sister at birth, but eventually we chose a name off our shortlist and that suits him perfectly.
Couldn’t imagine them the other way round.
