Aibu to want to go home?
We're on holiday in a chalet. Kids back to school Monday so last day is tomorrow, we have to be out by 9am.
Dh and I have slept badly all week, ds1 is sleeping in the living room as he didn't want to share with his brother, the weather has turned and I'm cold.
We've got a day out booked and then I want to go home.
Benefits : late night driving so quiet
Kids fall asleep in pj soon fighting
Sleep in own bed tonight

Dh is torn as he thinks we're too tired to drive, we should pack up the car tonight then roll into the car tomorrow early and go then

So would you stay or would you go?

If anyone is too tired to drive, don't.

Alternista · 03/09/2021 08:32

How long is the drive and what time would you be leaving?

Theblackdogagain · 03/09/2021 08:32

I'm with you on that but I don't feel too tired to drive and I'm happy to drive all the way with everyone asleep in the car just to get back to my warm house and comfy bed.

Dh is torn as he thinks we're too tired to drive is the key decider.

Who is driving? If it's him, and he says he is too tired, then don't "force" him. A busier journey tomorrow is better than him falling asleep at the wheel.

If you, and you are confident you're alert, then it's fine to do it.

User57327259 · 03/09/2021 08:32

Definitely dont drive when tired

Theblackdogagain · 03/09/2021 08:32

Drives about 4 hours and leaving about 7:30pm

If you're prepared to do all the driving then go for it. Or alternatively buy some over the counter sleeping tablets for tonight, get all packed up and drive home tomorrow after a good nights sleep.
I empathise it's awful trying to sleep on an unsatisfactory bed.

kaleidoscopeheartless · 03/09/2021 08:39

Do it. You have the whole weekend to recover and sort whatever you need to for school next week.

yourestandingonmyneck · 03/09/2021 13:00

If you are driving and are safe to drive I would definitely go tonight.

Tomorrow's just a wasted day of travelling otherwise.

Wilkolampshade · 03/09/2021 13:03

Do it.

Savoretti · 03/09/2021 13:06

I’d go.
If you are not sleeping well then you’ll be just as tired tomorrow anyway

Tomnooktoldmeto · 03/09/2021 13:11

We did just this 3 years ago and the bliss of snuggling up in our own beds and shutting out the crap weather was wonderful

We all woke the next morning and had a lazy relaxing pyjama day and had takeaway in the evening it was the best memory of that holiday

Window1 · 03/09/2021 13:14

We often leave the night before check out. We've had out last day of holiday and can sleep in own bed then already at home in the morning. Have a great day and then head home.

Sugarcube84 · 03/09/2021 13:15

We had similar and decided to leave, best decision ever!!!

Ifyouarehappyandyouknowit21 · 03/09/2021 13:19

We left our cottage the night before the next day and we wasn't prepared for night road works. What should have been a 3hr journey turned into 5. Luckily DH doesn't get tired easily. It was lovely to wake up in our beds the next morning though after having had a lay in.

We left 8pm by the way.

Patty101 · 03/09/2021 13:20

Another vote for leaving early.

We were recently in a similar situation and it was so lovely waking up in our own beds the next morning, and spent the whole day talking about how we'd still have been stuck in the car if we'd decided to stay for the last night.

And like others have said, if you're tired now, you'll likely be just as tired in the morning. Just make sure you have a decent coffee before you set off.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 03/09/2021 13:20

We did this last year. Had a massive list of things to clean before we left, and I started to pack leaving a change of clothes etc for the next day and then thought fuck it. So we had tea, the kids had a shower, cleaned teeth and put pjs on while DH cleaned and I packed and we were home in bed by midnight. Unpacked the car in the morning.

If we'd left in the morning, I would have run around for hours making packed lunches and packing the car and cleaning and the journey would have taken twice as long and then I would have had to unpack and cook dinner when we got in and instead I had a lie in Grin

HollowTalk · 03/09/2021 13:22

I'd pack everything this morning, go out for lunch and do something nice this afternoon, then set off at 6 pm - you'd be home for 10.

Singlebutmarried · 03/09/2021 13:26

Is there a reason you can’t leave before 7:30? If it’s because of dinner head off earlier and have a meal on the way home (even if it’s just a McDs)

TabithaTiger · 03/09/2021 13:32

I've done this lots of times. It always seems so much quicker to drive at night. I wouldn't leave earlier than 7 though or you'll get caught in Friday evening traffic. It's so nice to fall into your own bed and wake up at home with the whole day ahead of you. Plus the kids should sleep in the car, so you won't have to listen to them arguing all the way home!

MaggieFS · 03/09/2021 13:32

I'd leave. Makes more sense to travel through and evening than waste a day. Then all back in your own beds. Lovely.

Also, i much prefer packing to leave at the end of a day. If you are leaving in a morning you have to pack everything but then have to leave space for toiletries, PJs etc so actually you're not really packed at all and have more faff again in the morning. (The only exception to this is if travelling by plane, I'm not good at making good use of the last day if I have a plane to catch as I spend the whole day clock watching).

Theblackdogagain · 03/09/2021 15:16

The only reason we were leaving around 7 is to avoid traffic and to give us a chance to pack up and sort everything out. Dh is coming round to my way of thinking so we've been to the zoo, now heading heading back to rest eat and pack up and then we're off.
Bed here I come.

We usually do and we go away to cottages a lot.
JuneOsborne · 03/09/2021 15:20

Get some rest, a nap even.

Tiredness kills, so please do rest.

Definitely this.

Into your own bed and waking up at home.
Can you both share it?

Safety first though.
