AIBU?

AIBU for getting annoyed when people ask “are you in the q”

I’m in the chip shop and I’ve ordered. I’m on my phone and literally in the corner, away from the cashier and my eyes are on my phone.

Why do people continue to ask “are you being served love”. I have made it as obvious as possible I’m not waiting to be served.

Normally the person at the till says “what can I get you”. At that point it the person on their phone doesn’t respond I would jump in.

They're being polite and making sure they aren't queue jumping.

No good deed goes unpunished...

People are being considerate and checking that you're not waiting, not distracted on your phone and haven't realised you're next, and you're getting annoyed?

I admit I’m one of these people who ask if you have been served I always do, I was brought up to be polite. Hmm

Really, you are annoyed at people being polite. Probably because there are so many people standing about using phones, oblivious to what's going on around that they're not sure if you are one of them.

I know what you mean op. I was standing by a bus stop waiting for a bus, there happens to be a cash machine next to the bus stop that I’m nowhere near and had my back to but I was still asked if I was in the queue. Confused most times it’s pretty obvious.

I would usually ask to be polite. Especially if it's a messy kind of queue. Quite often people stand as if they are in a queue but aren't, so a polite, 'are you next' or 'are you in the queue' reminds them to get out of the way.

I totally get what you mean OP. An odd thing that happens to me on a regular basis is that when I AM in a queue,in a shop or at a bus stop, other people often seem hellbent on getting in front of me. Yet when I'm NOT in the queue,I get people hanging back and saying 'After you',or asking if I'm in the queue, when I think it's obvious I'm not. A good example of this is when I go in Gregg's and buy a sandwich that I want heated up. I move right over to the side, away from the part of the counter where the tills are,yet I still get people hanging back and saying 'After you'. Yet if I WAS in the queue, you can bet your life someone would be elbowing their way in front of me! People! I will never understand them.....

YABU

They’re being polite. It takes two seconds to say that you’ve already been served.

WTF is wrong with that? Confused

Some people just moan about ANYthing.

Would you rather they just push in front of you?

Do you also get annoyed by people saying 'hello' or people breathing?

I have made it as obvious as possible I’m not waiting to be served.

You’ve made it as obvious as possible that you’re on your phone and disengaged from the traditional process of queueing, ordering, then sitting down to await your name being called.

I’m not blaming you, OP, but it’s quite possible the staff have been told off for not offering help to someone doing exactly what you have done (sitting in corner engrossed in phone) because why the hell didn’t they clock all customers coming in at all times and instantly memorise who has been served and who should be next? The lazy staff bastards. Hmm

Just smile (or not, up to you) and wait for your order. Civility can cost a bit, bit good manners cost nothing, even with our worst enemies, which I’m reasonably confident the chip shop employees aren’t, in your case.

Enjoy your food!

YANBU, it really bugs me too, especially when I've purposely positioned myself so that even an idiot can see I'm NOT in the queue. I mean, sometimes person after person will harass you with this insane nonsense. They seem to be people who have no idea how to judge particular situations/people, just automatons who generate the same response every time

FFS. The best thing about the UK is the fabulous queue etiquette.

I’m on my phone

Well, they clearly think you're distracted by you phone and haven't realised it's your turn.

Why not wait over by the door if you don't want people being considerate to you?
