I'm vegan, and quite often see posts of the type you describe. I wouldn't say anything publicly because of the distress it might cause his family, but I wouldn't feel much sadness for his passing. It sounds like their error is in stating their feelings publicly.

Like my mother would say 'if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all'. Sadly with social media people get to say the nasty things they wouldn't say yo someone's face cause it's all behind a computer screen. Has little to do with being vegan and more to do with being an arse.

Nope. Their error is being cunts.

If the fact that someone does not share your beliefs makes you gloat at their death you are a shit show of a human being.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 09/03/2019 09:08

Well some will gloat, yes, but that is an asshole thing to do, you're right. A lot more will have a private "That saddens me less than it might have if he wasn't a hunter" moment, which doesn't make them terrible people

Online gloating at someone's death is horrible, full stop. I agree with you there. Private feelings on the matter should remain private.

Not just vegans though

If you look at any comments on any news story, there's always some twat saying something unforgiveable

The internet is a wonderful thing but it does not bring out the best in people

You only have to read aibu to see that!

Doesn't make them great people. Someone dying should trump petty disagreements- being a hunter is not like being in ISIS, most people's response would be empathy.

Isn't it hypocritical to say you care about all life yet gloat when a human dies?

That’s what I was thinking. Death threats to humans because they participate in legal activities that harm animals. Pompous bullies. I worked in a place that was mistakenly associated with testing labs - the sick stuff we used to get in the post was horrific and I can only imagine what would be sent these days. Yes traumatise a few secretaries, that’ll show ‘em!

They forget that their cats would eat their corpse given half a chance.

I’m indifferent to the news he has died, only because I don’t know him so it’s difficult to feel sadness for the death of someone you’ve never met. I would read it then move onto the next story. Can’t imagine people would feel too much angst over the death of a stranger tbh. I certainly wouldn’t feel the need to post a comment on it either for the same reason.

"Isn't it hypocritical to say you care about all life yet gloat when a human dies?"

Absolutely. I am very anti hunting, but gloating over his death is in such bad taste.

I am a meat eater, so I can't look down at hunters. I am not surprised at the comments, they are the same every single time and always have been. Just ignore.

I have to admit that when a bullfighter is injured and killed during a corrida, my reaction is "good job Karma".🤷

Many of the vegans I've met care a great deal about animals and creatures with no control over what happens in their lives, but have a certain 'fuck you, assholes' attitude to humans (adult humans with agency get the brunt of this). It's definitely illogical, but that's human nature for you!

Doesn't make them great people. Someone dying should trump petty disagreements- being a hunter is not like being in ISIS, most people's response would be empathy.

I can't say I've noticed that tbh. Most people I've met hear someone has died, ask a few discreet questions to discern just how sad they should feel, then make the appropriate remarks. I always feel sad for any family left behind though.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 09/03/2019 09:41

I should clarify, the above last remark relates to people I don't know. Obviously it's different for people you know personally!

I guess when someone has such a very strong belief about something, their emotions take over and they project their hate onto the people who take part in things they feel are abhorrent. You only have to look at some of the Brexit threads to see that people can react so irrationally and over the top when they hold such strong opinions on something.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 09/03/2019 09:48

All that shows is that they value animal life equally or above human life. It’s fairly inevitable considering how musty stupid people there are in this world. If you don’t have the faculties to understand why humans are superior then utilitarianism would dictate that his death is a good thing because his one death would save multiple lives. It’s analogous to people being glad that a torrorost was shot before he managed to set off a bomb. Just with an intellectual defecit.

Seriously. Karma! I don’t care what anyone says about the subject. What goes around comes around.
He wasn’t murdered though was he and I feel empathy for his family and that’s all.
He won’t be murdering defenceless animals anymore!
If we are a higher species we bloody well don’t show it!

Crazy I mostly share the same opinion as you.

I didn’t know him so can’t be that sad he passed away, people pass away all the time. I am sad for his family and friends as I know how it feels to lose a loved one.

I can see why people think it’s poor taste to gloat, but as a PP mentioned, do none of you feel it’s karma when bull fighters are injured/killed? I don’t see why we should feel so different about hunters. To me, neither of these people have very good moral compasses so I can’t muster up too much sadness they’ve died. Imagine the animals that will live now...

He was taking part in a barbaric, cruel and unnecessary passtime. Yes, he's dead which for those who knew him is I'm sure very sad. But let's not rewrite history here... This was not a good man.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 09/03/2019 10:40

You don’t know him (neither did I). He is no better or worse than those cheering his death or who threaten those who they deem ‘unworthy’.

I didn't know him but I know he got pleasure from pitting animals against one another and watching them be ripped apart for his 'sport'. I repeat: this was not a good man.

Oh please. It’s not just vegans. Have you ever read the comments on any news story of death of a hunter or bullfighter? There are always hundreds of gloating comments. I can’t say I feel glad that someone has died, that gains pleasure from terrorising, torturing and killing an animal, but I wouldn’t waste my energy crying over them.
