AIBU?

to ask her dog to stay away?

I'm in Starbucks having a coffee. Sitting at a table for 4 waiting for a friend.
A woman with a big retriever type dog comes in and sits at the table for 4 beside me, on the side beside me so we are right next to each other.
I don't like dogs so I slid along the bench so I was at the other side of my table from the dog.
The dog then curled itself up under my table with its head on my bag.
I said "Excuse me, I'm sorry, I'm not very good with dogs. Would you mind keeping your dog under your table? Sorry, I know it's a bit pathetic of me."
She said "what is your problem? Dogs are allowed here you know. Do you want me to get the staff over?"
I said no it's fine, but could the dog maybe lie under your table?
After much huffing and puffing she eventually moved the dog.
WIBU? I don't think so but maybe I was?

That’s so rude of her. I have dogs and would never let my dog make someone else uncomfortable.

Of course YANBU . Not everyone likes dogs

I’m a dog owner, yanbu. Plenty of people would quote the dog to sneak under their table but plenty wouldn’t. If you asked for my dog to move, I would have moved it and profusely apologised (although I probably wouldn’t have let him be there in the first place unless the table were encouraging it which can happen).

No of course yanbu you were polite she thinks the world should love her dog I really wouldn't give it a second thought you didn't want her dog near you which is fair enough.

YANBU. (Yes I'm a dog owner too.)
Dogs being allowed on the premises doesn't mean it should be resting its head on your bag FFS! Dog should be sitting close to the owner. Not bothering any other customers.

I assumed dogs wouldn't be allowed in a coffee shop because it is a food outlet ?

YANBU and it wasn’t pathetic of you at all.

I say that as a dog owner who takes her daft pooch everywhere with her.

Yanbu. Dog owner. I'm very conscious not everyone likes dogs. She was being unfair.

Lots of cafes, bars, restaurants etc are dog friendly. They tend to be the ones that we go to so that we can take the pooch.

I didn’t know that Starbucks were dog friendly though, I wonder if my local one is.

Anyway, the dog owner shouldn’t have huffed and should have kept her dog away from OP.

I would have huffed. At my dog for sneaking under the table where she had no right to be and me for not spotting it. I would have apologised profusely to the OP. Blush

I like dogs, but really don't think you should be able to take them into cafes etc.

Ywnbu. It sounds like you were perfectly polite and explained exactly what “your problem” was. So I think she was being quite rude in arguing with you.

She was the unreasonable one. Even if a place allows dogs, you keep them close to you and don't let them disturb others.

She's a rude cow.

what is your problem?

You had already politely explained to her what the problem was!

Ywnbu, I would never let my dog sit under someone else's table. Just because a place allows a dog doesn't mean they should disturb others, my local Starbucks allows families but I would never let dh curl up under someone else's table no matter how husband friendly they were, it would be rude

I’m a dog lover but I wouldn’t take my dog to Starbucks and no way would I let it lie under someonelse table without saying ‘sorry, hope you don’t mind my dog using your bag as a pillow?’. YANBU, she was rude, you asked her nicely to remove the dog and she should have moved it away. Although I love dogs I don’t expect everyone to like them and I respect others.

The dog sounds lovely and well-behaved. What harm was he doing?

In any case, you were one person taking up a table for four, so in a dog-friendly cafe, one could argue that the unused space under "your" table could rightfully be utilized by a dog.

Wow she's rude! I love dogs and I love my dogs but I'd understand if someone else didn't.

Yanbu, she was rude and entitled. I used to have a retriever and loved him to bits, but he was so slobbery I wouldn't have wanted his head on my bag, let alone anybody else's.

And Tbh I would be put off by a cafe being 'dog friendly' and find anothed one that wasn't.

diddl · 09/04/2018 15:38

Don't apologise!

There was no reason at all for it to be under your table.

I love dogs-I have one-doesn't mean I want one under "my" table when I'm out!

YANBU

I do think the occasional dog owner forgets that just because the dog is a precious member of their family doesn’t mean that everyone else will like them too.
