In your opinion, and why?

Context is - ex has taken photo of dd (9) in bath.

I think she's too old for this. AIBU.

Past the cute baby/toddler stage imo. Unless it's just a headshot with the rest being covered by bubbles!

I can't really answer your question. But I do have a 9 year old ds and it wouldn't occur to me to take photos of him in the bath. Not now. In fact, I'm all about helping him learn about privacy around his bathing and showering.

32? 2?

4-5. But even then never to be shared on social media

I'd say that was definitely too old. And too old to even be in the bathroom with them unless they have sn that mean they need help with washing.
Has your dd elaborated as to the context around why the photo was taken? Are there other concerns?

I don't think it's okay past 1ish really.

I would probably not take nude / revealing pictures after toddler age on the basis that my dc are likely to be uncomfortable with that in future. I'd feel like my privacy had been violated if I now found a photo of me in the bath aged 9.

3 or 4ish, I guess.

Or if older just a pic of their head or feet.

Not at all for showing others other than close family though - very odd when people post these on FB and similar.

If there's bubbles or something covering private parts I think it's fine! Somewhere I've got a picture of me aged about 10 with my younger male cousins aged about 6 and 8 all in my nan's huge jacuzzi bath together with bubbles up to our shoulders!

9 is far too old. Alarm bells would be ringing

Report
LovingLola · 29/04/2017 22:37

How did you find out about this?

Report
MyWhatICallNameChange · 29/04/2017 22:39

I think I've got a photo of 4 of mine in the bath together, so the oldest would have been 6/7. Loads of bubbles, so nothing to see. I wouldn't have gone older than that. He started showering alone around the age of 7/8 - all of my have.

At 9 I was going through puberty. No way would I even have let my parents in the bathroom, let alone with a camera.

My DD1 is 9 and no way would she be happy to have her photo taken naked in the bath. Whereas DD2 (age3) wouldn't bat an eyelid. Although I probably wouldn't take one anyway unless there were lots of bubbles. And certainly not on FB.

The majority nine year old girls I know would be horrified at the thought.

A friend recently put up a pic of her 10 year old DS in the bath but only the shoulders up and he was covered in foam so funny not just a random DS in the bath pic

Was it just a random pic? I'm not sure what a nine year old would be doing in the bath that would be worth photographing tbh!

The only real issue here though is how did DD feel about it? If she's not bothered then don't make a big deal of it. If she is bothered then you should make sure she knows she can demand privacy in the bathroom.

9 is much too old. I wouldn't normally even go in the bathroom when ds1 (8) is in the shower, let alone take a picture, and it's been that way for a couple of years atleasf that he's been taking charge of his own showers and having his privacy. I'd say about 2 is about right for moving on from pics in the bath!

The water is opaque so you can't see under it.

He sent it me to demonstrate the coloured bubble bath.

I don't think its sinister, just dumb.

Yes I talk to her about privacy and encourage independence.

I haven't taken many pics of my son in the bath anyway. And once they get past toddler stage really id say

If there was a purpose for the picture like you say then I don't see a problem

Report
TreeTop7 · 29/04/2017 22:51

He shouldn't really do this again, coloured water or not. At 9 she should be afforded some privacy.

Report
laureywilliams · 29/04/2017 22:52

I don't think she's bothered. So I don't want to make it into a big issue. .

Although we've discussed naked photographs and taking photos on phones etc

But I'm concerned that he thought it was in any way appropriate to do this. And wasn't more sensitive to her needs/age

If she said show mummy the coloured bubbles then it's hardly sinister - it's a photo of the bubbles and she happens to be sitting amidst them as opposed to a photo of her in the bath taken to show her.

It depends on the kind of relationship you have with ex. Is he likely to take it on board if you raise your concerns of him respecting her privacy as she gets older? Or would it make him more determined to do his own thing regardless?

Keep talking to DD about her right to privacy, even from her parents, so she can speak up for herself if/when it gets to the point that she isn't happy with it.

It's not that it's sinister, it's just that he needs to respect her increased need for privacy as she gets older.

So her DAD took a photo of her and sent it to her MUM and she's not bothered...

It's not inappropriate, so I'd suggest you don't say that it is. She's not bothered, why does he need to be 'sensitive' to needs SHE doesn't have?

Honest to god, it's her DAD & she isn't bothered. Stop making trouble where there isn't any.
