We had a special assembly at school for this, led by the daughter of a holocaust survivor ... yesterday!

Don't know who got the wrong day but YANBU, of course. So many of the children didn't know what the holocaust was even (7 - 13 year olds) which shows how important it is that we keep it in public knowledge as children grow up.

We caught a CBeebies segment on this at around 7.30 his morning - a short animated sequence depicting the internment of Jewish people in concentration camps. I thought it was moving and sombre yet appropriate for children - very well done.

My 4.5yo wasn't paying attention but my 5.5yo was. I told him that some boys and girls didn't have their mummies and daddies in the camps, and he said 'So they couldn't call their mummies or daddies to help them if they fell down?' with a look of real worry on his face. It broke my heart he needs to know that these things happened though. We all need to remember.

My ds2's class last year did WW2 as a topic and went to see a survivor of the holocaust in our local theatre talking about her experience and about the book she had written.

I was watching the documentary tonight about the army films that were made when they liberated the camps and he watched some of it and asked questions and talked about but didnt watch it all as he is a really sensitive soul and it was pretty graphic so he went upstairs to bed.

I watched Anthropoid tonight. Not featuring the Holocaust but was rather apt and made me think. I think Auschwitz is something everyone should see in their life time. I don't think I've ever felt like I did there before. So eerie. All those souls.

My dd is 7 and I haven't discussed it with her yet. (To be fair, we have no TV in our house so she won't have heard news bulletins etc.)

I think it's far too heavy a weight for young shoulders. Im of Jewish heritage, I fully intend to share it with her one day but not until she is older.

Very moving coverage on Twitter including the St Louis Manifest- showing the fate of hundreds of Jewish refugees who made it to the US and were turned back to Europe meaning most of them died on the camps. Tragic.

I've always been aware of how horrible it was of course. But DH is Jewish, though not practicing.

We have a baby son.

Under nazi rules my tiny bundle of gorgeousness would be killed.

Really brings home the horror.

Dont know but maybe itsnoteasy is making a point about what we choose to commemorate and dont choose. If so its a valid point. Remembering others doesn't lessen anyone remembering holocaust.

We should remember the holocaust, and other atrocities too.

The holocaust was in recent history and carried out in such a chillingly organised, business like, massive scale - by people who are our neighbours, who were just like us. It's incomprehensible really.

I don't disagree at all with someone asking what else we are doing to remember other horrors, it's a valid question. I do believe that people trying to play down or even question the reality of the holocaust show why it's so important to never forget and we all have a duty of remembrance. It doesn't mean we should ignore everything else, and even ignore the mass slaughters happening today.

It isn't true either. The Nazis also ruthlessly murdered Roma, the disabled, mentally ill people, gays. They murdered six million Jews. That is a huge number of people, human beings. It should be remembered and never forgotten.

As someone who lost family in the Holocaust, I agree.

And the Holocaust was designed to systematically wipe out Jews in Europe - it wasn't really anything to do with the Nazis' war aim; it was an add on because they could. Part of their ideological stance on people they consider beneath their aryan ideal. The horror of it was the dehumanisation of others. The fact they documented it all with such precision is truly chilling. The Jewish people have a long history. I think some people in our society don't like the fact that they stand up and call out the murderers still.

Of course we can remember other atrocities, but it's Holocaust Day. The day set aside predominantly to remember that one.

Our modern era shoul be called the "But What About" Era. What about the men if women march? What about other atrocities if we remember the Holocaust?

This would have happened in the U.K. if we had been invaded in 1940, the U.K. would have been a very different place than it is today.

The freedoms we take for granted, would not exist.

Holacaust survivor numbers are dwindling as time marches on, so it is good to remind people what actually did happen especially the younger generation.
