AIBU?

to ask how you prevent outing yourself?

I've posted on here for quite a few years now but namechange regularly just because I sometimes post personal stuff and I don't necessarily want ppl in rl to know all my business if they recognise me. I've noticed some people on here for years though. Do you accept being recognised? Do you just make sure you only share stuff you're comfortable with people in rl knowing. I've thought about changing minor details about my personal situation but I doubt I'd be consistent and the troll hunters would have a field day with me I think. Plus I like thinking of new names. Means I am always a newbie tho...

Meh
I try and be nice and I've no secrets so it comes with the territory.

Part of the reason I'm so paranoid is that I have recognised someone in rl. Not on here but another parenting site Netmums who wrote an innocuous but v. Identifiable post. Then I saw another post from the same username which I don't think was something they would have wanted to share with me. Prob should have said hi on the original post but can't say anything bow as I think they'd be embarrassed that I had read, or might have read, the other post.

Having been outed I now...

1- Change username very often
2- Post less
3- Post less identifying stuff
4- Avoid like the plague any of my social media accounts containing my real name being linked to my MN account
5- Avoid any kind of debate with the potential to spill over outside of MN (which admittedly is fairly hard to predict, but I work on the basis of "any doubt-don't post")
6- Have long MN holidays to help enforced the low-post count goal I set for myself.

Recently I've seen quite a few MN threads reproduced and commented on in the DM. So I can see my posting reducing even further.

I just can't imagine being identified, probably naive though.

I have just posted some very identifying stuff on here about my past life.
People from my past would recognize me if they read it but people in my present don't know about it. If they find out I really don't care.

To be honest I'm not bothered if I'm outed. I stay clear of controversial topics, stick to the truth always throughout life and I am happy to be accountable for my words.
I guess if I had a serious problem that I needed help with I may name change for that but I can't see my self asking for help here as you can end up more confused with all the different opinions.

I NC a lot and change some details about my life when I post.

Yes, I only share stuff I'm happy with RL people knowing. If it is more sensitive/outable, I namechange. I don't post things like job details or answer any of the "name your pets/how old are your DCs?" type threads.

Mumsnet aren't making it easy to namechange at the minute. It's not working at all for me. Very annoying.

But yes.

Things like frequent namechanging when possible, especially if starting a thread likely to contain a particularly identifying scenario.
Not posting identifying details such as real names, occupations, birthdays, towns etc etc.

If anyone cared to look I could be identified by people that know me very easily, I don't really mind.
Everything I say on here is true, I try not to be too much of an arse hole and don't say stuff that I wouldn't say in real life.

Name change regularly. Also, if discussing something about one child, possibly change the gender if it's irrelevant to the subject e.g post about DD being a fussy eater when it's actually DS, altohugh that's just an example so not outing myself right now!

change name and slightly change up the details of the post like say something happened today you say it happened two days ago.
If the issue you have is with a male change it to a female.
These types of changes should not change the advice you get.

I don't care if anyone recognises me, I don't post anything personal anyway.

But if I did, yes to ipost's post, I agree with that

I name change and change things slightly. Like approximate age of my kids. It's always round the age they are, not like pretending I have a teen when they are toddlers.

I try to be as vague as possible and not post anything to identifying. My business is very identifying so I don't post what I actually do. Just about the industry if it comes up.

My sil looks for me on here. She keeps saying she has found me, but it's never me. So I must be doing a fairly good job.

If I was discussing anything I was ashamed of I'd learn how to name change, as it is, I'm okay.
(But totally understand why someone would).

I use the same logic I use for twitter. Don't say anything I wouldn't in RL to someones face but name changed on one that had a tiny possibility of the person it was about seeing it -because they're unstable at the best of times-. That and my sister guessed who I was before based on how I write waves to Sis if she sees this. That and I'm quite boring on here so doubt anyone would be arsed Grin

Having been outed quite horribly a few years ago I now name change every few weeks and am a bit more careful about having too many identifiable details under one name.

I'm reclaiming my Reality name for a bit though, but will only use it to post about fripperies.

By being average and having few friends in rl. I sometimes wonder if family might be on here. But i suspect those know very little about my life so they'd not guess.

I've name changed once but that was only as I had to because I couldn't log in with old one. I don't post anything personal.
