It's the way they try and fool us into buying the dearer product rather than the ones on special offer. Tesco does it blatantly, they put certain products on special offer but the product immediately below the "special offer" is not the one being reduced,

Its more or less the same product but for example, if it's for shampoo the offer might be only for dry hair, but the price tag has the "dry hair" bit in very small letters. So you pick up the shampoo for "greasy hair" thinking you're getting a good bargain only to find at the checkout that it's the full price.

It's legal I know but I wonder how much they make from duping their customers this way. The trouble is as well the staff always try and blame you for not reading the offer properly and imply you're being a bit dim. Anyone else get annoyed at this. Surely they shouldn't be allowed with getting away with it.

The individual price labels are normally clear though and usually under the product. If they aren't it's because someone has carelessly put something back, which isn't tesco's fault.

Erm...I always read the print and then compare. Shopping is a headache these days in places like Tesco, that's why I go to Lidl. You always know what you're buying at what price.

Yes starry but they sometimes make it so obscure. Unless you're wise to their practices many shoppers won't notice, it's very clever how they do it. The sign is always immediately over the products that aren't included in the offer, the wording on the "offer" and the product below it are nearly identical. The shopper shouldn't have to spend ages checking.

I've worked in retail and this isn't allowed to happen. The product displayed under/by the promotion sign is the one that'll be being promoted and if it's not then an error has been made

Outside agencies come in unannounced and check all of this. Nescafé , to use an example, will pay extra for their prominence on a shelf and yes they'll come in a check that they're getting what they paid for.

So I'd say this is just an error or you're not reading it quite right

Waitrose are bastards for that, especially if you throw in the various multibuys and Waitrose card-holder discounts. They often have it set up so that two smaller packs on a multibuy are cheaper than the larger pack, and as LH says, compound that with messing about with the per-unit prices, and leaving it unclear as to whether that price is with or without the various offers.

Agree OP and often the shelf label isn't with the reduced product. Join me in being " that customer" who will look at the receipt and say " Oh I thought the dry hair shampoo was in the offer at 99P. If it's not I don't want it , can I have a refund" if I get to the till with the wrong item.

I just get my money back and they get an annoyed waiting queue. Once or twice they've sighed and put it through at the lower price and refunded the difference!

Quite often the shelf stackers put the stuff in the wrong place which doesn't help. I have not very great eyesight so struggle to read the stupid small print 😡

Yes I do, not all the time but definitely for certain products.

DS stacked shelves in Tesco. No they don't. I have shopped in Tesco for 30 years and never been under any misunderstanding about the price.

The only think that actually annoys me about all supermarkets is where they quote a price per KG for meat, and that's only because every single week I have to explain to dear old mum that the massive leg of lamb she has picked up is not a fiver.

I worked for tescos and when we had to change the promos of course they were set out in a way to sell more or not be "clear" i had a sandwich thrown at my head once when one of the sandwiches didnt have the yellow shelf edge label so wasnt apart of the meal deal!

Helen yes I've been that customer a few times, feeling a bit embarrassed at holding the queue up, but then I think, it's not my fault, you've caused the problem, don't do it, then it wouldn't happen.

If I have a query over a price, then I'll either ask a supervisor or go over to customer services.

Comparing prices, weights and measures to make sure you're not getting ripped off is basic arithmetic.

What I find bamboozling is the fruits and veg prices.

e.g. a 4 pack of Pink Lady apples is say £2.00, so 50p per apple.

Then they have the loose ones which are given in price per kg.

The 4 pack doesn't have a total weight on it so in order to find out which is the best deal you have to weight one or other of them.

It's a pain and I'm sure is done to make more money.

It's when they put something like Club biscuits in an offer but leave one of the varieties out of it e.g. The fruit ones weren't included but of course are on the shelf alongside the others so you could pick them up thinking they were in the offer as well. I use the self scanner so can check if things are included but think it's very sneaky
