to not go to the N.E this weekend to watch a football match?

We live down South (Berks). DH supports Sunderland. At Christmas, a friend sent him 4 free, good, tickets to watch Sunderland play Bournemouth (in Sunderland) this weekend. He asked me to go, and I said OK. My 2 DC would come too.

But, it's cold, snowy, icy, a fecking long way (5 hours one-way), ALL up the motorway (which I have a phobia about; I can't drive on them anymore since I had 2 panic attacks)... I really don't want to go.

So, I suggested he asked his friends. He said, "They won't want to trek up to the north-east to see a match of a team they don't support, in a sport they're not interested in."

I said, "But I feel like that!"

He said, "Yes, but I'm not married to my friends."

I looked into train tickets, but it'd cost £250 for us all to go, and I'd have to pay (he hates the train).

Another reason I'm feeling off about it, is we got free tickets to Champneys as a wedding present. 2 nights all-inclusive. Every time I suggested we go, he hemmed and hawed with one excuse after another, until he FINALLY admitted he really didn't want to go. So I've arranged to go with someone else to let him off the hook.

He's a lovely DH, but I don't want to trek to the NE this weekend to shiver at a footy match. AIBU? He's already paid £60ish for a family hotel room for all of us.

The northeast is really nice and you should be honoured to make this trip pilgrimage

Sunderland is particularly nice to visit at this time of year grey and miserable and the weather will just enhance make it look even worse its beauty

I live in the NE and there's no snow or ice anywhere near where I live or 30 miles away where my husband works. I used to live near Sunderland and work there and around the football stadium any snow and ice will be cleared. I'd come up with my husband but spend the time he's watching football shopping going to museums and drinking coffee

I love the north east! I said we could all go up there on holiday this year, spend a week there properly.

Getting the train there on time (to arrive by 1.30pm, to give some pre-match drinking socialising time), means leaving here at 5.50am! Driving up in terror means leaving at 8am. Ugh. For 90 minutes of freezing incomprehension.

THIS IS NOT AGAINST THE N.E. It's just against having to do things with him that I have no interest in, when I don't make him accompany me to romantic comedy films, Dolly Parton concerts, spas, etc.

There isn't any snow or ice.
that said t is forecast with 99% certainty this week apparently. Plus I wouldn't go to a football game if you paid me

He needs some bloke friends. I cannot be the ONLY person who has to suffer accompany him on his awful hobbies, it's not fair.

But now I feel really guilty for saying I really don't want to go.

If it was any other man in my life, I wouldn't have said yes in the first place, I'd have said hell no. BUT I LOVES 'IM.

Ugh, Is it really off to let him drive up there by himself?

I've been there to watch matches with him twice before. Once by car, and we went on to Scotland for a week afterwards, and once by train. I've accompanied him to COUNTLESS footy matches down here too. I've done my bit.

I'd push again to see if anyone else can go. I'm not far from Sunderland and it's utterly miserable up here atm

If he goes by himself, you can't guarantee he'll be able to return though.

Sunderland is so awesome and exciting that he'll want to stay

I live in the NE, weather is not icy or snowing, I'd say go, your dh and DC would love it and if they come a hours or so before the game they can meet the players in the fan zone and after the game you get to question the players on the stage of the fan zone and also win Sunderland goodies.

I'm not a Sunderland fan and also don't live in Sunderland closely connected to the stadium of shite as we call it. (Get given free tickets all the time even tho we are Newcastle season ticket holders)

stealthpolarbear which forecast have you seen which says snow is 99% likely in the NE this week? I live in the NE and can't see any sign of snow on the Met office forecast.

op I'd hate it too...there's only one team worth watching in the north east and it certainly isn't Sunderland!

Yep, it's saying something about the Mackems when they can't even give tickets away .

I'd probably go but skip the match and get Metro to Newcastle and spend the afternoon there. Far more appealing!

We get regular met office bulletins at work. I'll have a better look tomorrow but was surprised as its not too bad at the moment

Stealth, would you mind having a look then updating me tomorrow? I hate driving (and being driven) SO MUCH that the thought of being in a car in snow, hours & hours from home, is freaking me out! I'd really appreciate it! Thank you

Parts of it sound fun. My kids are ACE and we'd all stay in a big family hotel room together. It's really just the journey.

There's no snow in Sunderland. Still cold, mind!

As for where I live, the snow has only just started to disappear properly, today. I might be able to do the school run without constantly watching my feet (ice and melted frozen dog poo - delightful) by tomorrow afternoon.

While it is blooming freezing here in the NE we don't have any snow and the weather forecast claims that's it's going to warm up on Friday onwards.

No. Don't go it will be boring and stressful and he hasn't put himself out for you (spa thing).
