I want a Kindle. I already have an iPad, a nice laptop, other gadgets. Plenty of books at home. But i want a Kindle. Is it reasonable? Or can you tell me to get over it? Confused

If you can afford it get it. If not download an ebook reader on your iPad

Nope, get a Kindle. Specifically, get one with a backlight so you can read at night without the bedside light on.

They're fab.

I love my kindle, and it is a real pleasure to read on. So YANBU

Yanbu. Why do you only have to have something you need for Christmas?

If I need something I buy it myself, Christmas is usually when I get stuff that I don't need. Iyswim

Kindles are amazing, and I speak as a person who practically fetishises loves proper books.

When you want to take a lot of reading on holiday, want to take a book to read on a commute but don't have much space in your bag etc etc, they are miraculous.

And since when were Christmas presents just about what you 'need'? Grin

New Kindle fire. I absolutely love it and at £50 it's not a ridiculous extravagance.

I don't need another handbag, more make up or another pair of riding boots. But I want them so that's what I'm getting! Christmas is for treats. Enjoy your Kindle.

YANBU, life would be very dull if we only did what we needed. You are allowed to have things just because you want them, so get the kindle and enjoy it

Thanks. I love my ipad (gen3) but i find it too bulky to carry around.
The "need" factor is just thinking of how much i would be using it -- had bought a few items in the past that found not much use. (iPod, some kitchen appliances, etc.)

Yes, get a kindle. And as suggested upthread get the one with the backlight. I didn't think I could justify the extra money for that and kick myself nightly for not paying extra for the paperwhite. They're great for holidays too - you can see the screen even in direct, bright sunlight which you can't with an iPad. DH and I have our kindles on the same account so we only have to buy one copy of a book and can read it at the same time, which is convenient.

I even had an email from Amazon today telling me they're on special offer. It's like fate saying you actually need one.

YANBU at all. I have 3 kindles (I realise this might be a little bit unreasonable).

My kindle just died and I miss it. Yes I can read on the Ipad, but I get distracted by, well Mumsnet mostly...

Also I worry about losing the IPAD with all the other information on, it would be expensive to replace - my personal details on it etc.

The Kindle, if it did get nicked it's self contained.

Also less likely to drop Kindle in bath.

Get the Kindle app on your iPad. Or, even better, get a mini iPad - you can carry it around and you get all the extras. I dithered for ages about getting mine thinking I really didn't need it, but it's proved to be one of the most useful gadgets I possess, especially when I go on holiday.

I have a kindle. I love it. However, I am lusting after a voyage. Sigh.

I've got and iPhone, iPad, kindle paperwhite and have just ordered a kindle fire (arriving today!) I use them all for different reasons

I also don't need another handbag or lotions and potions, but they're on their way!

Yes, get a Paperwhite or a Voyage (I love my Paperwhite, I haven't tried the Voyage). They are far nicer to read than a phone or iPad because the lighting is different, they are bright enough to read by but not shiny-bright. I read mine in bed, if I read from a phone then I don't get sleepy because the phone light makes my body think it's still daytime.

And definitely get the paperwhite if you're just using it as an e-reader - so much better than the iPad app (no reflective glare from the screen)

spiderlight · 24/11/2015 11:41

A Paperwhite is a completely different experience to a Kindle app on another tablet - much much easier on the eyes. I wouldn't be without mine. It's so easy to take on holidays or to appointments where you might be waiting around, and the battery lasts ages between charges - weeks.

Also completely unnecessary, but you can get lovely decals for them too. My Paperwhite looks like this

Meh - get it. I want a new necklace for Christmas, I already have several hundred and as my mother likes to point out - I only have one neck.

We have the £50 new Kindle and like Silverfly1 we like it.

I have a kobo glow, and thats really good if you want to steer clear of Amazon (some people do)

Kindle paperwhite is on sale at Amazon atm - down to £79 from £100 odd!

I have a basic kindle & have had it for 3 years & love it. But when it dies I will go for a paperwhite.
