AIBU?

To hate when people use "text" instead of "texted"?

It just really bugs me.

"I text my friend yesterday" - no, you TEXTED your friend yesterday!

That's all. Rant over.

Maybe they feel it is an irregular verb along the same lines as 'put' and 'set'?

You're right but for some reason 'texted' just sounds so wrong.

I think it should be changed to 'text' just so I'm less conflicted Grin

I hate it too. Texted is a regular verb.

YANBU at all, but I see you've had the text past participle apologists in already.

Text sounds pleasantly Jacobs to me.

Jacobean! Jacobs? Thank you phone.

Texted is a regular verb. I agree but why? There is no reason that a 'new' word should be a regular verb. Surely the English language is one that changes through usage and if the yoof are saying text rather than texted, and they are the ones that use the word the most, the correct usage is text.

I have never and would never say texted. Agree it sounds silly and IMO too much of a mouthful. Agree you are right OP but doesn't mean it sounds right.

Jacobean! Thank you phone.

There, eggy, you see? We can't rely on phones to dictate the English language to us.
Texted.

And thank you again for putting my comment up twice. Sigh.

Texted is a stupid word, looks wrong and sounds wrong.

Try pedants corner, but in my opinion 'text' is a noun not a verb. I'm sure the OED will enlighten us in the not to distant future. If it hasn't already.

Yanbu, drives me mad. I think it comes from America where they shorten other verbs too - but just sounds ignorant over here.

I'm far too lazy to say texted. Even typed out it looks wrong.

Get down with the hip kids OP, right on.

I don't even think TEXT is a verb - it is a noun:

I sent a text

Send me a text

Don't try to make it into a verb or you get the problem of how to decline a new verb...

Texted does not sound silly. It sounds correct.

When people say 'I text him', that sounds silly. Also, it leads people to refer to texts as 'texes'. Seriously, I know people who do this.

Texted is what people on Jeremy Kyle say.

I'll stick with text thanks.

While we're on the subject, I'm fed up with people using "bias" as an adjective - eg, "I may be bias, but my baby is gorgeous." It's just wrong Wink

I think that turning a noun into a verb is concession enough, frankly, without making the fucker irregular to boot.
Still texted.

I loathe the word texted and used text (when I use it at all.)
