Went into Boots this morning and was browsing Rimmel nail varnish. Rita Ora has done a special range for them of five/six nail varnishes. Every one had a sex related name - Orgasm, Lose Your Lingerie. Can't remember the others. AIBU to be slightly shocked (and disapproving) that nail varnish is so very sexualised? In particular a brand/range like Rimmel/Rita Ora which is aimed at younger women and girls. I would guess girls of 11/12 are part of the target audience for this product. I have seen NARS Orgasm blusher before and it didn't occur to me, but the styling/branding of this display really shocked me. AIBU and a fuddy duddy (I'm 36!) or do others think Rimmel is not projecting a great image for itself.

I happen to like Rimmel nail varnish, but you're right that they shouldn't be using those names. It sounds cheap and tacky, and it's not doing anyone involved any favours.

I like Rimmel products a lot. Their 60 second nail polish is fantastic. But this? Ugh.

I'm 10years your junior OP so probably the top end of their demographic and I think it's absolute bollocks!! Who names a product aimed at teens and above orgasm!! (unless I get one when I paint my toes false advertising I'm afraid!!)

Me and dp always mention though that old Rita Ora is a bit of a dirty one and not in that fun kinky way, no like wouldn't touch with a barge pole kind of way, so I'm not surprised.

Shocking names get noticed. On a shelf, being noticed is what earns you money. So there is a need - profit.

Stupid, yes. Tacky, yes. But that marketing move is exactly Rita Ora's brand image, and is what sells to consumers that are easily influenced.

nobody looks at nail varnish and thinks about it in a sexual way. nobody puts on some nail varnish and then does anything sexually or feels anything sexually that they weren't going to before as part of a general "getting dressed up feeling".

nail varnish names which most people don't even notice and plenty of girls wouldn't even understand.

I agree, but am assuming it's also a link into the Fifty Shades of Grey film, with Rita Ora having a small role and singing the song which had been Oscar nominated.

I thought this too actually. Not usually prudish but I just don't see the need for names like 'orgasm' for what is basically just bright orange. Having said that it is a beautiful shade of orange and dries ever so quickly Grin

Yes, it's a shame isn't it? The idea that presumably manufacturer thinks they will sell more with such utterly ridiculous names is depressing. I suppose it being aimed at young girls/women makes it worse. I never batted an eye at my Deep Throat Nars blusher. Just thought it was stupid.

My favourite weird / inappropriate name for an item of make up is my Benefit eyeshadow titled...."bikini line"!

It is a light shimmery neutral sort of colour so I think they meant to invoke sand / suntan images....it just makes me think of a inflamed, freshly waxed bikini line! Grin

I agree - tacky and vile and just not necessary. I've never really been bothered by Nars Orgasm (it's a fab colour) probably because Nars is a premium brand and probably not bought by younger girls.

That said my Dad used to work in US and travel regularly so he was always picking up bits and pieces for me. Nars was always cheaper in US but there was no way I would ever ask my Dad to buy me Orgasm blusher!!!

Ain't happening - would rather pay the extra money Grin

These names are crude and unnecessary, beyond that though, what's wrong with the word orgasm? If teens realised that it is normal for women to feel pleasure during sex, it'd be better no?

If it is 50 shades of grey inspired opi managed to name their range without going to smutty levels. Rimmel has just clearly lacked imagination. I'd be a bit Hmm if my hypothetical new teen daughter started experimenting with make up with these names, but ultimately do we know/remember the names? I don't.

The names are stupid, yes. I was thinking this on Monday morning actually as I stood in my freezing cold bathroom at 7 am and applied my Too Faced eyeshadow palette. The shades all have 'sexy' names too: satin sheets, french tickler, sugar walls... ugh.
It doesn't offend me, it's just a bit Hmm

I had a matching nail varnish and lipstick called 'Iced Champink' from Avon. Fairly innocuous. I have never reached those dizzying heights of matching make-up again.

Is rendezvo really spelt like that? (It is in 'Midnight Rendezvo' according to Boots website linked above) - that looks really wrong to me. Hmm

I was meh at the names - most of them are v tame / would go over kids' heads - I was expecting far worse.

I loved Rimmel when I was a teen, it was one of the early ones to ditch animal testing. I lived in Heather Shimmer.

I had 'iced champink' too - think it's the only time I've ever matched! I would not like my 12 year old DD to buy or even browse nail polish with sexual names - there is just no need.
