to ask at what age should a woman no longer have long hair?

I love my long hair and right now in my life mid-20s I wouldn't dream of getting it cut.

I had it shoulder length once and it made my face look fat. Seriously.

But is there an age where long hair on a woman really isn't suitable or perhaps would be considered as a little mutton dressed as lamb kind of thing?

I'm going to have a Judi Dench when I start turning gray. And start dressing like Felicity Kendal. They've done older age well. I won't be getting my cleavage out every five minutes like Helen Mirren, or wearing bright lipstick like..well, too many older ladies. I want to age gracefully and not cling to my lost youth.

Someone up-thread asked for styling ideas for long hair, to avoid the 'scraping it back into a ponytail' trap.

This blog has some great, and doable, styles, I love it, it's revitalised my long hair (halfway down my back, age 33):

That was me, LarkinSky and thank you so much for the link; they all look lovely and ideas that even a clumsy oaf like me can pull off; cheers!

I hope there's never an age to have short hair!! I bloody love having long thick (boast grin) hair. Plus my dp has even longer thicker hair then me, it's gorgeous *swoons!!!

I adore long hair, I'm 28 and I am currently trying to grow it to the small of my back and I'm planning on keeping it that length until I feel ready to cut it not when I reach any particular age! It depends solely on what suits the individual person!

Did any of you see one born every minute last night......the lady with SUPER long hair giving birth......her hair was divine! Jealous!

My MIL is in her mid-60s and has hair just past her shoulders which she has loosely permed to give it a bit of oompf. It'sa lovely silvery grey and looks really nice.

My own mum is 51 and has shoulder length brilliant white hair. It's in exactly the same style as when she was in her 30s and still blonde, and she doesn't look a day past 40 according to most people.

not updating your 'do' as you get older can be a mistake. See Jerry Hall.

Women should have their hair how they like, no matter what their age is. That said, I have friends who've had the same hairstyle for their entire life - long and straight - as they are (admittedly) too scared to change it, which is quite understandable.

I'm 40 and have bra-strap length dark hair with layers round the front sides iyswim. It's naturally curly but I straighten it a lot. I'm SO bored with it and have been toying with getting it cut to a chin-ish length bob but because it's naturally curly I'm not sure how that'll look. I also have two cowlicks at the front so can never have a fringe as it won't sit right, so I'm concerned that shorter hair won't have the weight needed to 'drag' it down and make it behave, if that makes sense.

I love Mariella Frostrup's hairstyle, think it looks really funky.

I always regret cutting my waist length hair.

I am in my 40's long dark fine hair with fine hi-lights and long layers and that's pretty much how it will stay. It's easy to deal with, I can do more things with it and, if I cut it short, I look like a fat man.

My mother keeps telling me that I should get it cut shorter at my age, but then she also tells me I am too old to wear jeans.

Totally agree

I cut my waist length hair when I turned 30. I don't regret it, but it has taken some getting used to, especially as it is so much more work than long hair.
