AIBU?

to take the piss out of 4x4s

Picked dd up from school today, she pointed at I think a Landrover Freelander (I'm not an expert) in the car park, and said 'why is that there?'

I said 'maybe they're a farmer'.

Said vehicle had clearly been the subject of regular waxing, leather interior, and so on and looked the shiniest vehicle in the car park, so this was obviously not the case, certainly not in this area.

DD said 'maybe they built that building there?'

'Maybe', I said.

I could say 'because some people make inappropriate and antisocial car choices'.

But taking the piss seems better?

It's just someone's car. Do you really need to invest that much angst in it? It is just a car.

Well you are a bit of a idiot then.

I was a childminder and needed a 7 seater to actually run my business.

I have a friend who had a recently disabled dd and needs a 4x4 to carry equipment.

My sil has 5 kids so needs extra seats or they can't go out as a family.

Don't judge unless you know the circumstances.

So you fly??

My Dad, and a lot of our friends have 4d'art, but then they are members of the camping and caravanning club so use them to tow the vans. My Dad got mightily fucked off a couple of years ago with everyone moaning about 4x4s, and then asking for help when the snow came

Maybe the owner lives out in the sticks?

Dhs land rover gets cleaned rarely

reallllllly.....

Grin

I have a freelander.. other than being slightly higher, and therefore easier for my MIL (who has mobility issues) to get into, it is no wider, longer or any different to most other vehicles on the road..

but do carry on judging...

There are seven and eight seater MPVs, aren't there?

We used to play How Many Wanker Points for cars, so they got more for alloys, darkened windows, personalised number plates, bull bars, naff signs etc.

The only valid gripe with them is safety IMO. I think if they hit a pedestrian, it's worse than bring hit by an estate or people carrier. Hopefully the very vast majority aren't going to be driven into people. If I was really rich, I'd have an estate, a people carrier and a 4x4 so I could choose what I fancied that day Grin

YABU....

You don't know whose car it was - so you don't know what they use it for so how can you say it's inappropriate.

We have two cars - a Mazda 5 and a Landrover Discovery.

The Landrover is an entirely appropriate car choice for us - because we have a 21ft caravan to tow. And Landrovers are fabulous for towing. They are also very economical on fuel. Not to mention my husband is a a fully qualified Landrover mechanic (amongst other vehicles, he's in the Army) and because of this we have no servicing costs and it is maintained to a far better standard than quite a lot of cars you probably deem less antisocial because of it.

I am assuming you believe it's inappropriate because it was at a school? DH tends to use our Landrover to go to and from work (on country roads/lanes so I'm hoping that's appropriate enough for you) and we use the Mazda around town. But if I was using the Mazda and one of the DC needed picking up from school would I say "Oh no, you aren't a farmer, you must not take your antisocial and inappropriate car to school! Leave them there!"

Of course not. That would be unreasonable. Like you.

(And FWIW - a Freelander isn't actually a "proper" 4X4 - it's the town car version of a Landrover and as such has far less emissions than a Defender or Discovery which are both 4X4 in the true sense, a tighter turning circle, is significantly smaller, lighter and isn't actually much use on a farm (all reflected in the lower road tax) - so you're being doubly U - and ill-informed and now your child is too.

Well there is the fuel economy issue of course....

You'd love taking the piss out of my Audi Q7. I think I might get one with an even bigger in January when the lease is due for renewal.

I get pleasure from knowing it eats away at people like you.

*even bigger engine, that should be.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 30/10/2012 23:40

Well I think if you're prepared to spend all that money on an Audi Q7 and all its fuel just to annoy people, it might be you with the problem as far as being eaten away goes! Bit of a pyrrhic victory, perhaps.

We towed our big caravan 400 miles across Germany - and only used half a tank (40 litres) of fuel... Our Mazda 5 would use 50 litres to do the same mileage WITHOUT towing the van.

Our evil 7 seater Landrover knocks our apparently more acceptable Mazda 5 MPV into a cocked hat for fuel consumption - it goes almost double the distance litre for litre.

Which technically makes our 15 year old Disco more eco than our year old Mazda hehehe!

Throws Freelander (muddy) keys into bowl.

I live in the country, I'm a single mum, I don't work? I don't get paid. It snows like mad here when we get it.

I'm hoping I can continue to afford to run it.

I've done nothing wrong, never hit anyone and drive really well and with consideration.

YABU. Not all freelanders are 4x4s. And their emissions and mpg are similar to a family car.
Plus I don't really see how saying "maybe they're a farmer" is taking the piss. May they are? Or is that my sense of humour fail

I have an X-trail. It's not a 4x4, it's a truck, but cover in dirt. We live in Oz, and off road sometimes to my despair as we could get stuck.
It's bloody brilliant for chucking the kids in, and going off on long journeys. The boot's massive.
But, I have had a chortle to myself before with people who drive 4x4's, and they drive up to a speed hump, break to slow down, and then go over it Confused

TheOriginalSteamingNit I didn't say I spend the company's money on a Q7 just to annoy people. I said I get pleasure from knowing it annoys people like you. It certainly wasn't bought with that in mind but I think of it as a nice bonus.

I like to overtake 4x4s on speed bumps on my bicycle.

It makes me [hgrin].

I want a 4x4, but I'd be too scared to park it anywhere. YABU. If you hate them, then just take the piss, we all have our own likes and dislikes.
