To not like to hear children say oh my god?

NDN's DSs are playing outside and as usual they are directing operations within the group of kids from the street who are also out.

Several times now I've heard one or other of them say "oh my god, are you thick?" or " oh my god that was close" etc (they're playing football).

AIBU to think that using that sort of phrase age 8 isn't acceptable? I'm not religious btw.

I taught a pupil who when I told her to pretty much do anything seemed to have one stock answer - "Oh my God".

My 6 year old says it a lot and so do I, I guess. You're right though it isn't the nicest thing for a kid to say. My parents don't like him saying it so he corrects himself to omg which is worse!

mine have never said it and any child in my earshot gets corrected to oh my goodness and I don't care how much this embarasses my DDs

No I dont like it. If I hear my children speak like that I tell them in our family we dont speak like that.
I would punish them because its easy to become a habit but I would contine to remind them not to say it.

Oh my god wouldn't bother me from an 8 year old - but it's all largely subjective.

I don't like it either. DD aged 8 has started using it and I keep having to correct her.

jesus christ was classed as swearing or more than likely Blasphmy (spelling) when i was younger so we got in trouble if we said it, I dont really mind Oh my god , as long as its not what my teen says OMG cos that really ticks me off

It doesn't offend me. It's one of those phrases that I'd explain would offend others and if I heard they'd said it at school (for instance) I tell them that.

Mine don't say 'oh my god' in the house or when out with us (I hate it too so don't allow it), they might say it when playing with other children though and I wouldn't personally police that.

I'm not keen on it, but not sure why.

My DS1 (3.6) picked this up, probably from my next door neighbour that we see a lot, and he went through a phase of saying it all the time. We just corrected him to 'oh my goodness' or our regional equivalent of 'oh my giddy aunt' and that seems to have stuck.

He has gotten into the habit of correcting people if they say it now, which I think is sort of cute at the moment and we all chuckle, but will become more annoying as he gets older.

I don't know why, because I'm a sweary so & so, but I really don't like hearing this from small children.

In DD's school the phrase that they all seem to use is "Oh my days" - which I hated to begin with but now find myself using too... if I say Oh My Goodness I sound like Joyce Grenfell...
