i seen a postman this morning and his bag seemed so heavy, also had a few parcels.

Now wouldn't it make more sense for postmen/women to have trolleys instead of bags

ours normally has a trolley and a bag, when he refills the bag it looks quite heavy but no way he could ever just have his bag, route is far too big, are you sure your postie doesn't have the same!

auntiepicklebottom2 · 02/12/2011 10:18

not sure tbh

Mine has a trolley. It's quite nifty

Mandy2003 · 02/12/2011 10:36

Sorry auntie I came over all smutty when I read your OP, and thought of this!!

Don't worry, I expect he'd hidden his trolley somewhere and was going to go back to it when he'd dispersed the contents of his bag Grin

Sarahplane · 02/12/2011 19:57

Ours doesn't normally have a trolley but he did this afternoon.

WhoIsThatMaskedWoman · 02/12/2011 20:03

Ours always have trolleys - I didn't realise anyone didnt anymore.

marriedandwreathedinholly · 02/12/2011 20:04

Ours has a bag and a trolley. He used to have a bag and a BMW which he moved from road to road as he went along Grin.

FIL is a postman, he has been using his own car do help do his rounds as his round is on roads where the locals have refused to have boxes put in to store mail so he has to take the entire day's post with him when he leaves the sorting office in the morning. Almost all the other rounds have boxes where the postmen can collect the next lot of post as they are going around.

Only part time contracts are now given so when a full time postman leaves they get replaced with a part time person who is expected to do the same amount of work in less time. Also, not everyone gets replaced so rounds get bigger and bigger but still have to be done in the same time. You cannot claim overtime, if you are late back due to the amount of post you have to deliver in a day then they take disciplinary action against you for slacking. FIL has been going in work an hour early for no pay to avoid this.

OddBaubles · 02/12/2011 20:08

Ours only has a bag but I've seen others in the town with trolleys and there are also 'safes' dotted about that RM vans deliver full sacks to, I'm guessing they are half way around a round.

AllYourFleshAarghBelongToMe · 02/12/2011 20:13

Mine has a van - he drives round his route first, taking out bags and leaving them in little lockups round the route, then he parks up, and picks up each bag as he gets to it. So he's only carrying post for a small number of houses at once. I only know this because his predecessor, on seeing me out of my house and discovering I was going to be out all day, said 'I've got a parcel for you - meet me at the postbox up the road in 5 mins and I'll get it out of the box for you'.

CMOTdibbler · 02/12/2011 20:20

Ous cycles 2 miles before she starts her route - the bike has big panniers, so a trolley wouldn't work

UKSky · 02/12/2011 21:10

JenFestive that's shocking. Our postie does his round on a bike. But his mate brings a couple of extra bags and leaves then in our driveway so he doesn't have to go back to the sorting office. If it's raining, we keep them in the porch.

I don't mind at all. Our postie is always friendly and helpful and we get great service from him.
