What does heavy taste like?

AliasGrape · 20/11/2021 09:31

It doesn't, to me anyway. But I'm wondering if you're my DH who insists on downing gallons of bottled water and screw the cost/planet because tap water apparently 'sits heavy on him' Hmm

RampantIvy · 20/11/2021 09:34

Not sure what you mean by that. Our water is lovely Yorkshire Water, from the reservoirs just up the road from us.

Scarby9 · 20/11/2021 09:34

It depends where you live. It tastes different in different places. And at different temperatures.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/11/2021 09:36

Ours is soft water. Tastes lovely. Sort of sweet and light. Comes through lots of Derbyshire limestone.

RandomDent · 20/11/2021 09:37

Do you mean metallic? Like Spatone?

faithfulbird20 · 20/11/2021 10:16

Maybe metallic...all I know is at my parents house the water tastes light and sweet. Whereas in my house (10 mins away) it has a strange taste..I guess metallic maybe the word...something wrong with our taps?

This has piqued my interest! Try here: www.unitedutilities.com/help-and-support/your-water-supply/your-water/water-quality/unusual-taste-smell/bitter-or-metallic/

Or is it recent? Have you had covid?

Sammilouwho · 20/11/2021 10:35

I know what you mean! My in laws live in a hard water area and it just tastes weird, I even hate having a cup of tea with it because it's just heavy. We used to live in a soft water area and the taste was just so different.
Apparently filtering it in one of those Brita filter things works, we've never tried it so can't say if it does.

Twoweekcruise · 20/11/2021 10:37

Ours taste horrible too, metallic and bleachy! We had to get a water filter to make it more palatable.

KindergartenKop · 20/11/2021 12:39

There's probably a pigeon in your tank.

FictionalCharacter · 20/11/2021 12:43

@KindergartenKop

There's probably a pigeon in your tank.
Drinking water comes directly from the water main, not your tank.
FictionalCharacter · 20/11/2021 12:44

I prefer tap water that’s been left to stand for a while. Does that work for you? It definitely tastes different.

StrongSunglasses · 20/11/2021 12:47

I don’t drink tap water, but on the very odd occasions I have to it tastes absolutely disgusting- it smells as well. 🤮

Returnoftheowl · 20/11/2021 12:49

I live in a hard water area and know what you mean, it definitely effects the taste.

KindergartenKop · 20/11/2021 13:03

@FictionalCharacter there's a pigeon in your water main then.

Definitely try a water filter.

I've only lived in places with good water, and even here I can taste the difference with a filter. For drinking, a Brita filter jug kept in the fridge is ideal.

WildRosie · 20/11/2021 14:34

I use a Brita filter jug too and the improvement is significant. I'm in West Yorkshire and I suspect the tap water contains a fair bit of iron judging by the faint red trace marks in the bathroom and noticeable metallic smell when my laundry is drying inside.

BTW, isn't 'heavy water' something to do with nuclear weapons manufacture ?

cherrytree63 · 20/11/2021 14:44

I got a filter jug hoping it would improve the tap water and it made the water taste disgusting, despite rinsing the cartridge several times.

Lolipoplady · 20/11/2021 14:53

Agree with pp about trying a filter jug. I now live in a hard water area after having soft water all my life and it's horrible. The filter jug just about makes it bearable for drinking but even after filtering it's still got a bit of that hard water taste (and scum).

liveforsummer · 21/11/2021 06:53

The water is lovely here to the point I can't think it anywhere else. You have to drink when you pour though as it tastes stale very quickly if left to stand

faithfulbird20 · 22/11/2021 09:51

@RandomDent thanks. We've not had COVID but I have been poorly like full on flu.

Our NW water is good. Water at mum’s SW London flat is horrible.

faithfulbird20 · 22/11/2021 09:56

Yeah I'll still drink hard water from the north rather than salty weird London water!
