Woolly hugs

Blanket for Matildawormwood: Sign up thread for crafters and donors.

We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

    *Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

    The Colours:

    Blues, greens and cream.

    Ideas for squares:

    The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

And I have another lovely donor to thank, but I don't know who it is Smile

Someone is a total Star and has sent money for the Blanket for Matilda, twas disguised in a national express coach map. A huge thank you to you, and if you'd like to let me know who you are, please do so, so we can thank you in person Thanks

Yay, glad my squares have arrived safely!

What is this special pillowcase? Sounds like a handy (and cost effective) knitting bag, wish I'd thought of that before splashing out on my gorgeoise but v overpriced new knitting bag!

Tis is exactly that, Ophelia. Grin

V practical as both my wool WIP bags are stuffed full, there is wool blooming everywhere, blankets just being finished off, and somewhere in all that are 2 kids and DH. Oh, and my proper work stuff.

Pillowcases seemed the best option!

They are special because of what is inside Smile

My first post! I discovered MN accidentally and have lurked for a little bit but can't think of a better place to get started!

I think this project is absolutely wonderful, though the reasons behind it are heart-breaking- my thoughts are with Matildawormwood and all the other recipients of blankets. I'd love to be involved- have PMed RatherBeOnThePiste with what must be some irritating questions but if anyone can help with a slightly broader issue...

Does anybody know of somewhere in Manchester where I can get the right wool more quickly than ordering it online? I'm concerned that I'm going to run out of time if it's slow getting here.

I can't remember if there's a John Lewis in Manchester but if there is, then you'll be able to get the right wool there. House of Fraser will also stock at least one of the wools.

Thank you! JL is in the Trafford Centre, House of Fraser is in town but I don't believe I've ever seen any wool there... I'll explore tomorrow. Have just found the Support Thread which is probably a much better place to post from now on!

Morning all Brew

Lots of PMs this morning Thanks

GreatestGatsby - just about to PM you, but yes JL is your best bet, and also you might like seeing the colours in person for the first time, sometimes it's less clear online.

Off to work as usual, back at lunchtime Thanks

Well, I've finished some squares, such as they are! Thoughts of Matilda and her little Daniel bound up in the making of them though, so I think that's the important bit!

I'll pm pisty, that's hopefully the right thing to do? I need to know where to post to....?
