Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

S.L.U.T (have I been wrong for so many years)

I am a (male) maths teacher, and have been for many many years.

I am now worried about an acronym I use to help my students remember how to draw a certain type of diagram correctly.

It should comprise:

Scale: So that you can read the numbers

Label: So you know what is being measured

Units: On both axis

Title: Every diagram need a title to be complete.

Every year this has been greeted with hilarity by all my students, and I am sure it has helped many of them feel confident that they have covered all the points that will be marked. It is not something that they forget.

Of course, I make no reference to the 'meaning' of slut in other contexts, and I would challenge any student who took that opportunity

I think I know what the responses are going to be. But it just doesn't feel that outrageous in the classroom. Everyone laughs, and the lesson carries on.

(I haven't NC, so you can check if you think I have a history of sexism or misogyny.)

MyEmpire - I completely agree.

I'm just pointing out that there are two meanings, and it's abundantly clear what one the OP meant. With his schoolboy snigger snigger and the choice of LUST as his other anagram. Which he viewed as somehow more acceptable than SLUT.

Is it evil that I want to twist the mnemonic to make it KNOB somehow?

cherries the OP has accepted that he was wrong to use the word and has said that he won't be using it again. This should be seen as a good thing and progress in the feminist sphere. Paedophile, FFS, this on the weekend where the debate has been about why more people don't use the feminism section.

Nigger was an acceptable word 75 years ago: context is everything. These days most people don't have the reaction to "slut" that people on this thread are having. You see a significance in the word slut which most people don't see. Words don't have inherent meaning; they have the meaning we give them.

In Holland, people use the word "cunt" casually on daytime TV or chatting together. It does not have the shock value that it has in the UK.

I occasionally use the word "slut" but only when referring to men or boys.

So because you use the word slut to describe men, you assume that's what everyone else does? No, to the genral population it is a girl and one who chooses to have sex. God forbid.

You see a significance in the word slut which most people don't see
Who is most people? Sluts is one of the most commonly words on porn videos. It's used regularly by mra and PUs. It sounds to me like you don't actually know the word Confused

Noblegiraffe, I wouldn't have said pedo as a teen as that's not an Americanism but I'd 100% have called the teacher a perv after keeping us after class like that. OP is lucky though as a teenager I'd have reported him

Terms can be racist or misogynist or disablist and yet be used by people who are not racist or misogynist or disablist.
Old people who refer to 'coloured people' and have to be reminded it's not appropriate any more. People on MN who have been told why the word 'retard' is offensive and so don't use it any more. Kids who have to be told not to use the word gay as an insult.

The OP who has realised that the word 'slut' isn't simply an edgy word because it has sexual connotations and isn't going to use it any more, even in completely out of context situations.

I was a 15 yr old girl with the cool teacher who wanted to impress us. I was doing extra math tuition to try to get an A*.
During a session on balancing equations or some such our teacher made a comment about the graph looking like a breast. As the session went on he compared other graphs to perky or saggy boobs as he plotted them.
I can't remember anything else about the lesson except him saying "ooh, it's a perky one". I felt so awkward and remember feeling totally embarrassed. If you'd asked me I wouldn't have said anything because I was too embarrassed. It just felt weird and like the teacher was trying to be all laddish and matey with the boys. I was one of two girls in the room and I felt like a total outsider.
I dropped the sessions. Took the lower paper and got a B.

That's the effect everyday sexism or "banter" has. Might have made the boys remember graphs or like Mr T. It made me uncomfortable in a place where I was supposed to be learning and where the adult was supposed to be in loco parentis

Using SLUT as a memory aid for maths students is way too far from SUTL.

(Yes, I know that's not how you spell subtle Wink )
