What will you be reading over Christmas?

I might go for The Little Stranger for spookiness, or the next Mrs Tim book in the series I've been reading, Mrs Tim Gets a Job, for comforting familiarity or maybe I'll try Rosamunde Pilcher as recommended here so often.

BUT what about you lot? What are you going to be curled up with as you digest the turkey while reaching for the choccies and swigging sherry by the roaring fire?

In the end I've barely read a thing (hangs head in shame). There's just been too much interupption and other people hanging around for me to be sure of getting a good start on a book.

What I have been enjoying though is listening on my headphones to Anna Massey reading Rebecca. I started while I was preparing Christmas dinner. I've even taken to saying "no, don't worry, I'll do the clearing up" to people as it's a good excuse to get involved. It's interesting because I remember Anna Massey so well from when she played Mrs Danvers on tv that I thought it might seem odd her playing the girl/second Mrs de Winter but her voice fits really well with the narrator being older and looking back on her gauche young self.

I'm reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I've only just started it though so not got very far. I've seen the film that was good but disturbing

Finished 11.22.63 by Stephen King and now onto something much lighter and easier on the brain. Paige Toon's The One We Fell in Love With

I'n reading Frog Music by Emma Donaghue, it's very good so far; though sounds a bit bizarre: historical fiction with a cross dressing frog catcher (!) joining a trio of ex circus performers in 1890s smallpox ridden San Francisco.

I've read two books over Christmas so far

1 The Loney- hugely critically acclaimed. Described as gothic horror. Beautifully written but just peters out at the end so really don't understand all the amazing reviews.

2 The Dinner by Herman Koch. Disturbing but riveting for the first half and then loses it at the end again.

Very frustrated at good starts but poor endings this Christmas. Have just started The Children's Garden (thriller) by Catrona McPherson- shaping up well and hoping this one finishes up well too!

ladybird I took that out of the library back in July/August (it had been on my list for ages!) but first trimester exhaustion meant I never got around to it. It's definitely on my list for early next year though!

Recently started Brilliance by Marcus Sakey; it's good so far!

I was very pleased with the books I got out from the library just before Christmas:

Americanah
This Must Be the Place
NW

And my mum gave me her old copy of God in Ruins, after I lost my own.

The problem has been tearing myself away from reading to operate like a human being and a member of my family! I'd be happy curled up in bed reading all day.

I've loved The Shell Seekers since I was a 14 yo exchange student in Germany, it was the only book in English that my host family had and I lost myself in it. I'm currently reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn for the second time, but have downloaded the new Agatha Raisin book and the new Jack Reacher as Christmas presents for my parents, who share my Amazon account, so I will read them next.

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep was lovely. It's the story of two ten-year-olds trying to solve a mystery during the heatwave of 1976. I'd say anyone who likes the Kate Atkinson mysteries would really enjoy it.

Bold: Fiveshelties, they are mainly series writers but both have written stand alones too.
In the case of Tony Black, he has written two amazing stand alones, His Father's Son which got me into his books, and The Last Tiger about the hunting of the Tasmanian tiger. But he has written two or three series' of crime books.
Richard Montanari is brilliant - I'm currently on book 7 of his 9 book series about two American homicide detectives. Most enjoyable!

I have only very recently discovered that Kate Atkinson writes crime books so have read one after another. I am half way through When Will There be Good News? And absolutely loving it. It should keep me going as with a 4yo i don't get masses of reading time.

Hoping to get the rest of the series for Christmas though. And maybe the most recent ian rankin or The Muse as I loved the Miniaturist

I usually read crime waycat so will look out for both those authors - are they series or just stand alone?

I am an avid crime and thriller fan, and now after binge reading Tony Black and Richard Montanari, I feel the need for something a little more light hearted.

So I have made the momentous decision to indulge in some chick lit this Christmas, along the lines of Jessica Blair, Santa Montefiere and maybe some Sheila O Flanagan as well.

No doubt I shall soon be back to my usual noir material when I've had my fill of sloppy slush!

I finished The Husband's Secret and found it a very good read. Going to start Derek Hansen's Remember Me. I have read a few of his 'Lunch with ....' books and found him to be a excellent author, so have high hopes for this one.

I'm reading Wolf Winter, a historical crime novel set in 18th century Swedish Lapland (not jolly and festive but really interesting and suitably wintry.) if I manage to get that finished over the holiday I'm hoping that Santa will have brought me one or two new books to lose myself in. Nothing nicer over the Christmas holidays than coorying in with a good book.

I've got a little pile: The End of Elsewhere (a travel recommendation from the 50 books thread) which I'm currently reading, then Four Futures: Life after Capitalism (read a review of it in the paper then saw Verso were selling all their books 1/2 price and was tempted), The Volunteers (a Parthian Books thriller set in S Wales during the miners' strike that I picked up in the library) and Breakfast at Tiffany's (also from the library, never read it nor seen the film).
I'm also hoping for a few books as presents as my friends and family know my tastes!
Oh, and I've also got a book about the Hacienda to read from the Kindle sale but that's on my phone so will probably wait until I'm travelling next.
