Vegan weight loss thread

Hello!

Is there a weight loss thread for vegans / plant based / nearly vegans etc, on the go already please? If not, would anyone be interested in joining me on here?

I am in need of some healthier eating habits and a bit more exercise etc. I'm not doing a crash diet or anything extreme, but I'm trying to eat more healthily and no snacks in the week, except fresh fruit and veg if I'm desperate.

I'd love some company, if anyone would like to join me.

Hi all

I recognise some names from the "what i ate today" vegan thread.

@ppeatfruit thank you for that book suggestion. I have just read it and listened to the audio. I think it might be just what I've been looking for. I had tried the gastric band one a few years ago but it didn't resonate. But this does.

AAAaaw that is so nice Breathmiller I'm glad you've found it useful.

It's for life for me, you never have to be hungry Grin !!

ppeat that's it! And I don't have to obsess about food. If I am full then I can stop. Knowing that that the 'rules' of my latest diet don't mean that it will be a looong time til I can eat again.

I do have to get used to the feeling of feeling full though. I have overridden that part of my brain for so long that I really have to dig deep to recognise whether I am ...

  1. Fairly hungry
  2. Slightly hungry
  3. Neutral
  4. Pleasantly satisfied
  5. Full

I can get the higher and lower ones but it is going to take some inner work to really sense between these more subtle ones.

I love meditation and mindfullness so this approach really works for me. And I liked what he said about emotional eating. If i am eating because I am hungry for food then with awareness I can stop when I am full.

If I am eating to fulfill an emotional need then no amount of food will satisfy that. I liked the little exercises on being kind to yourself.

Yes I love the "Be kind and accept yourself " part too. So many of us hate our bodies.

I found that the chewing properly\slowly really tasting and enjoying the food helped me to get to know my 'fullness' dial! (still does sometimes!) . The other part of that is it puts you off junk food because it sort of disappears in your mouth and also tastes soooo
sweet or salty. Eating a good fresh apple slowly is far more satisfying!

I have been so surprised at how much I have wanted healthy foods. Lovely salads , fruit, a beautiful colourful plateful of veg.

I did the exercise on eliminating a particular food and so far the thought of a bag of crisps really does NOT appeal.
But I keep imaging a bowl of salad leaves and vegetables.
And I feel so at ease about and around food.
It's quite remarkable.

Hi ladies, how are you all getting on with weight loss. I have started using mfp and have a limit of 1500 for weight loss. Stuck to it for 10 days and feel on a roll. Hopefully the calorie defect and exercise I am doing will help. I have about 1.5 stone to lose x

That's not much Coco Grin I gave up a daily proper cup coffee, and started Food Combining (not for weight loss but for health) and lost that much without trying , no extra exercise Grin

Before I was a vegan . Recently cutting right down on sugar did it too!
I do have a coffee every other week now!

I like the 'no pain' diets like Paul Mackenna's like Breathmiller's esp. for maintenance.

Good Morning
Room for another? Firstly I wouldn't class myself as hard core vegan, started eating plant based back in December and it kind of stuck, there have been about three occasions where I have had meat this year, I don't really miss it, but I have put on weight. I am blaming lock down and a few other health things I have had going on. I figure it would be nice to compare food and things with others following a similar diet. I am intolerant to Dairy and Gluten.

I know that my issue is snacks and the fact I am working from home, I have also not been to the gym properly since March, we had a brief spell where we went back but we are tier 3 so at the moment it doesn't feel right attending. I love walking and aim for 10,000 steps a day. Some days it is really hard to hit that, I love cycling but more in the summer!

I have developed a rather nasty crisp habit and would like to get rid of that!

Weight this morning 9st 13, Was 9st 4 back in March. I would be happy to get back down to 9st 7lb.

Today so far;

Porridge (45g) with 180ml of Almond milk

Lunch is a left over chilli with some salad and I was thinking of frying off some mushrooms to bulk it up!

Tea today is Soup for me as everyone is having pizza.

@ppeatfruit can I ask what you used to read up on food combining. I have read a few bits online but don't really get it. Sounds great if you lost that without being too restrictive. I am managing OK on 1500 having 3 good meals and snacks but no mindless snacking and gorging. Xx

Well it's quite old fashioned. I haven't read a specific book about it. I know it brilliant for health and weight loss. On line it says to go 4 hours between meals (I don't do that, I'd be climbing the walls!!).

The most important aspect (esp. for vegans) is to eat fruit on an empty stomach. I always have it for breakfast. Because things like beans, lentils etc. are a mix of starch and protein anyway. They don't affect my health if they're with whole rice or whatever.

I'm older and my digestive system can't cope with late meals. Apart from a bit of fruit sometimes.

It sometimes saves lives!

Hello softpebbles Grin I find if I start on crisps I can't stop, I suppose it's the salt, if I do have them, I have them with a dip, ,maybe a salad and it's a meal! I like those, no potato, veggie ones!

@ppeatfruit I'll read up on it as I know nothing about it. I couldn't eat late either I eat at 8, 12 and 5 due to the kids who are now teens. Scales not shifting I always expect but never get quick results x

Coconut I don't weigh just go by my clothes and the mirror! Paul Mackenna says that weighing too much can cause problems because we all either lose water or it's time of the month or whatever.

Your username contains a great deal of calories btw. ! Grin I find that annoyingly almost all the shop bought vegan foods have sooo much of it! (i use olive oil as a 'spread').

So I'm checking back in! Had my baby nearly three weeks ago and now have just under three stone to lose. Anticipating very slow progress as I'm breastfeeding and fed her six times between midnight and 9am last night so am running on very little sleep, which makes it so hard not to turn to sugar! And shared a massive bag of crisps with DH last night. But so long as I make gradual positive choices I know I'll get there eventually.

Food plan:

B: porridge and a spoonful of peanut butter and a glass of OJ
L: jacket potato with beans
D: red lentil Bolognese from the freezer
S: medjool dates, apple

And then I just have to try not to eat tons of unhealthy snacks!

Congratulations Crocodilian Grin Grin

You'll lose it soon but I suggest that you don't bother at the moment, I know that no sleep feeling Grin . The sugar cravings can be helped by having dates, figs, pears etc, etc.

@Crocodilian ah you only had a baby three weeks ago, perhaps focus on making sure you get out for a walk everyday. You deserve a few treats whilst breast feeding and with so little sleep.

Today

Porridge
Butternut squash soup, put to many chilli flakes in it! Spinach and mushrooms, packet of baked.
Dinner will be some 'beef' casserole without the beef! I have chucked veg, rosemary, red wine and stock in the slow cooker, I will add some cooked chopped Linda McCartney sausages 20 mins before the end.

@ppeatfruit yes coconut in so much and nut butters, seeds and Tahini all v tasty but calorific.
@Crocodilian congratulations on your wee baby. It does seem odd post birth your body it feels so different, I put on 4 and 3 stone with mine so understand your desire to lose it. I bf mine both till they were one and found whilst feeding I was very hungry and thirsty. Have lots of nice pram walks and within a year your body will probably return to normal, mine did. You will have a magical Christmas with a baby enjoy xx

Thank you so much @ppeatfruit, @Softpebbles and @Coconut80! Think I was a bit optimistic thinking I could consider my food intake from a weight loss point of view at this stage of the game! But I have managed a two mile walk three days out of four so far this week, so I think I'll try and make that my target for the next little while. So tired that I burst into tears at the supermarket when a shop assistant was slightly sharp with me and ended up comfort eating a 100g bar of dark chocolate when I got home! Blush

@crocodilian poor you, you feel like you are skinless after having a baby emotions are very raw. I remember pistnatally 6 weeks or so visiting the supermarket on my own and a woman asked when I was due. I was so upset I lied and said in 2 months. I'm sure the 100g choc was therapeutic x

@ppeat hope you have a lovely time xx
