Christmas eve is in the GFS model range woo hoo!!!
I’m an amateur, don’t rely on my forecasts etc etc, at this range it is entirely a guess, the models will change.....

I only have time for an instantaneous forecast at the moment -
GFS says: cold and settled.

back later for a better forecast.

We had a very short, sharp thunderstorm this morning, didn’t hear it aproach or move away, just half a dozen or so huge flashes with simultaneous crashes then gone again.

Only got down to -8 overnight. -7 when walking the dog earlier. -4 now.
Crisp chilly winter morning. Quite nice really this time of year as long as not needing to drive anywhere.

that sounds really nasty Manky.

wind and rain warnings some flooding likely.

Walked to work with rain falling on frozen hailstones, and lots of black ice.

Just looked out the window and we have an inch of snow now!

Thank you so much for your help!

I think you will be driving down through some snow, but also some heavy rain. I think that you'll be fine if you take it easy, but you could try checking the highways england twitter account to see if any problems are flagged up.

Morning OYBBK. I am thinking of driving from Manchester to Shrewsbury and returning today. We have snow/sleet here but I'm thinking it should be ok going south. Do you think it should be an ok journey.

Nice bit of thunder this morning in the heaviest of the rain :)

-15 expected tonight where I am. Currently -3.
cold front coming down would explain that. Hope it won't last long.

That does sound like quite a temperature drop! If you look at the surface pressure chart you can see that a cold front crosses over during the early hours/morning.

It is lovely to have a space where we can chat about weather :)

DH thinks that temp drop was a mistake. Maybe they are just guessing Hmm

Thanks OYBBK and Gloria for fab weather chat. Lots of love to everyone on here Smile. It is indeed chuffing freezing here too. I highly recommend neoprene (?) wellies. Toasty.
Interesting sudden drop in temp predicted here at around 2am 0 to -5 in an hour (bbc). What would cause that? Oh flip I'm a weather nerd Grin

Thanks for last nights forecast OYBBK Smile. It was indeed clear and chuffing FREEZING Grin. Had to scrape my car off several times in the night. There was thick ice on my car already at 7.30pm.

That's good Maudlin.

Just been out for a jaunt. By heck it's a bit nippy now. Must remember to replace my woolly welly insoles, wading through giant icy puddles has turned my own toes to ice.

Woke up to a fair covering and it's just started up again quite heavily but don't think it'll settle. Kids were really excited but then decided it was too cold to play outside. Boring little toads!

Thanks Gloria. I was up last night being sick and had a quick peek on here. There was a post about seeing flashes in the sky, I knew it was probably thunder snow but still in the back of my mind I thought ET Grin

Thanks Gloria. That's incredible. I was up during the night being sick and had a quick peek on here, somebody had posted about seeing flashes in the sky. It freaked her right out, I guess it would.

Maudlinmaud ~ pretty good along with thunder. I've only seen it once, about 20 years ago when Leicester had a heavy fall of snow at about 2am one January morning ~ 'tis a really odd thing to experience!

Heman it will be dry and cold, with rural areas perhaps seeing temps dip below freezing. That for once is a pretty easy forecast to make.

Morning all. How lovely that some of you have snow, its the best time of year for it.
Our weather is just blah, rainy, grey and very cold, and it's the damp cold that gets to your bones Sad
I'm fascinated hearing about thunder snow.
