The doghouse

Does your dog have access to water during the night

My dog sleeps in DC1's room (son is aged 18). He sleeps very well in his crate, which we leave open. Occasionally he will come out for 5mins or so but always return to the crate to sleep. We used to have a water bowl in the room but he VERY rarely drinks from it- even if he is encouraged to do so. Does your dog have access to water at night?

Yes I'm not sure why you wouldn't have a bowl of water available at all times?

If my dog feels unwell he gets up in the night and stands by the door and we always take him outside to the toilet through the kitchen in which case he can drink then. So absolutely no need for water in the bedroom (and given he spills more than he drinks that is a good thing).

OK. I tend to think free access to water is the default setting for any pet.

Yes, he sleeps in the kitchen and his water bowl is in there. Don’t think he drinks from it but would feel weird leaving him without access.

Water spills on wooden floors can be a problem plus I don't need to keep water in the bedroom for reasons above. Works for us.

Yea, she has a little hook-on bowl inside her crate.

Yes of course. They should have access to clean drinking water 24/7. I wouldn't deny a child a drink in the night, dogs are family too.

Yes, bowl in kitchen is accessible at all times, I'm another that thinks free access to water at all times in the home is a basic requirement, mine also have two bowls in the garden too and a mug in the sitting room which is their favourite drinking receptacle because they are hairy weirdos 😃

Bitey - we stand the dogs' water bowl on a big tray which in turn sits on a thick towel which is changed regularly. Protects our wooden floors.

Yes but they never move once they're asleep for the night, I only leave it in case they wake earlier than me and are thirsty.

Yes of course! The blighter has got several beds and water bowls available to him in several rooms on several floors in the house! (We have washable mats under ours. )

Ours does , he has two water bowls indoors one in the kitchen and one in the hallway . He sleeps upstairs but can come down if he wants to .

Yep our two always have access to water bowl, especially in the summer, they drink half a bowl between them overnight!
But they have the run of the downstairs and a bowl in a stand, so no danger of spilling!

Yes, because Sod's law if she didn't that would be the night she needed a 3am drink😂

Yes, a bowl in the living room where she sleeps

She doesn't ever drink from it even though we fill it up every day. She drinks from the two in the garden that gather rain water or puddles or plant pots.

Have had many dogs in many houses with different layouts and would not dream of stopping access to water at night for any pet, just a basic requirement imo.

Vet here. A healthy dog might well be able to go through the night without access to water, but there could be an illness developing, they could develop a raised temp in the night for instance and need water, and increased drinking can be an early symptom of many conditions (kidney, liver, diabetes). Water really should be available 24/7.

Yes and agree with the others that dogs should always have access to water 24/7. Mine regularly have a night time drink and then go straight back to snoring.

I am perfectly happy that my dog will ask to go out if he wants water. He asks to go out if he wants an unexpected pee or has an upset stomach as he trots over to the closed door and on wooden floors that wakes you up.

Yes he sleeps in the kitchen which is where his bowl is anyways.

are your wooden floors not sealed? I habe wooden floors in my bathroom! They are sealed and water on them isn't an issue

Ddog has access to his bowl downstairs if he wants it during the night. He only has a drink during the night if he wants out for a pee. When the really hot weather was happening i took a bottle of water upstairs with me and a bowl for him

Twistella was that question for me? It doesn't really matter because he would ask to go out if he wanted anything and I always get up because we have had so many upset stomachs at night.

Yes. He sleeps in a crate, but has a water bowl that attaches to the side of the crate. He often has a slurp from it when he goes to bed.
