57 days pregnant and has just thrown up, a very large amount each time, twice, about 10 minutes apart.

She did manage to get into the bin earlier and eat 2 bags of that horrid onion salad you get with Indian curries so may be a factor but im quite worried seeing as she is is due labour any day and i haven't the first clue about any of it.

What type of dog is the bitch and what was she mated with?

This thread is very scary.

The lack of knowledge by the OP is horrendous and anyone who wants to own a dog should be expected to learn the basics about dogs eg mating etc.

We all can fall on hard times but it costs nothing to learn how to protect and look after your animals and prevent situations like this.

I agree with Korma she may be giving the OP a hard time but the whole situation could be avoided. The OP is still making incorrect decisions for the dog yet feels that because of her situation she has no choice. It is not humane to make the dog suffer because of our problems.

The dog is ill because of the OP inability to cope.

Take the dog to a rescue, where she can have her puppies safely, where there will be 24/7 medical care and the puppies will be rehomed correctly and spayed.

I do have huge sympathy for the OP situation (there for the grace of god etc) but that does not stop her from making the correct decision now for the health of the .

We can help you find the correct rescue for your dog

This thread is ridiculous.

It is clear there has been very little thought or responsibility taken for the dogs situation so far, but it is also clear that OP is now aware that something has to be done right now.

OP I recommend you get to the library and borrow a copy of a book called 'The Book of the Bitch' by JM Evans and Kay White. Do it first thing tomorrow and read it cover to cover.

You need to make a clean and secure whelping area, to find lots of clean towels which you should cut up to receive each pup into. Buy some vet bed from eBay or similar which is easy to wash and dry quickly. Pups will be messy.

Read this and this.

Get on the phone tomorrow morning and take responsibility for what is going to happen; find a vet who will help you and get them on stand by for any problems.

Plan to get your bitch spayed. As soon as you possibly can. A accidental mating is dangerous, irresponsible and foolish. Add to that your current financial troubles which are only a couple of months after the mating, and it's clear that behaving responsibly is the only possible option.

Also pray it is a trouble free whelping. It would be heartbreaking for your bitch to lose her life because you haven't cared properly and that is a very real possibility with your lack of preparation.

Blame isn't going to help right now though. That dog needs a check up to ensure that she's not carrying a foot ball team or that ones in an awkward position blocking the exit , or that they aren't large and impossible to birth naturally. As much as i can't abide idiot owners who don't neither animals or seek advice, scaring op off so that she doesn't feel able to come back and read responses doesn't help that dog and doesn't change the fact that she herself is struggling and however misguided she was trying to do the right thing.

op if you are reading this please ring round tomorrow and find someone or somewhere that will help you and your dog. X

Aren't people on benefits entitled to help with vets bills? Please call vets or the RSPCA or pdsa, Battersea etc. see what options are available to you. Someone somewhere should be able to help you. You didn't know she was pregnant and if you took her then she was clearly in a bad situation and I'm assuming that you have no medical history of the dog. If you explain all this to anyone who will listen some vet or organisation may offer you a free consult. Just to get her checked over.

saintmerryweather · 28/04/2013 13:08

Did you get her from a rescue centre? Is there any way they could foster her to someone more experienced for the birth and then you take her back? I dont know if thats even possible

She's 57 days pregnant, which is less than 2 months.

How have you gone from totally secure and financially comfortable to too poor to get her to the vet in less than 2 months?

You really haven't thought this through, and it's not you who is going to suffer for it, it's your dog.

Mate, you need to rehouse that dog. If you don't even have the money to get your kids to a an e, you cannot afford to have a dog. It's not a family member, it's a dog, and you cannot call an ambulance for a dog, there is no nhs for a dog, and you cannot get emergency loans from the social to meet a dogs needs. You can do all this for your children, because we have the social care system as a safety net, and because they are not dogs. Dogs are a luxery.

Its ok op i read my post back and realise i might have sounded a bit abrupt, i can be a bit like 'right what are the facts' sometimes without any sympathy so i apologise too

oh and the insurance company i work for dont cover breeding animals so they wouldnt cover whelping and associated costs such as a c section. so ultimately it might not make that much difference that op doesnt have insurance.

Where did u get dog from? Is it possible to find out what the dads breed is. How big is your dog? If its small or the dads big u could be looking at a c section. Please do something to find out before you have a real medical emergency on your hands.

Speak to Any animal charity you can and explain situation. You need to know how many puppies and get advice in how to assist as dogs can have complications.

So korma if i had her for 10 years and only just got into this situation would you be advising me to give her up then because i could not comfortably afford an emergency?

Like i said i was financially better off when i agreed to take her and did not expect everything to go wrong but i have always been taught a dog is for life so was not going to just throw her away and show my kids that when it becomes difficult i can just abandon her.

Do you have a good relationship with your vets? Some of my family cannot afford vet fees. Our vet is happy to treat their pets on the understanding that the fees will be paid at the earliest possible time. It's an arrangement I made with them because we've always used that vets and they know I will pay, if my family cannot.

Which insurance companies have you looked at? Some are far cheaper than others. One of my dogs costs £35 per month, the other £6 a month with different companies.

Dreams yes the PDSA is what caters to those on benefits here but they ask for a donation. She is going there after the litter to ensure that this cannot happen again.

I'm sure there is a scheme that will spade your dog for free if you are on benefits? Is there a blue cross near you op? Have a look as they are free for anyone on benefits I think.

That is unfair Korma i cant even afford the taxi fair to a hospital right now if god forbid my kids needed it does that mean i should give them up too? If she needs a c section then i will have to have her treated in an emergency and owe the money to the vets and pay it off with a loan or over time there is a way around these things it is simply that the pdsa cannot be contacted today for me to know my options.

When i agreed to the dog i was not in this much financial trouble and like i said already had plans to register with pdsa and sort out insurance ect it came on very suddenly and by then my kids had bonded and giving up the dog would have been heartbreaking for them.

Do you not think i know i cant really afford the dog right now? But i am not willing to give up a member of this family when it will not stay like this for long it is simply a difficult time right now, if i gave something up every time i struggled i wouldn't have any bloody kids right now either.
