Did anyone else wonder where their last 10 years went last night? Caught it by accident (way past my bedtime), then was glued. God, that was part of my life - young, single, City wine bars every night... Now I just feel old, married and staying home every night with a baby.....! How DID that happen?

enormouschanges, does your DH have this Pavolvian reaction to Holby/casualty because he wrote for it and it was an awful experience, or because he tried to write for it without success? I write (not for TV though) and I know - although not that well - a couple of people who write for TV. One has written for Robin Hood, another for Doctors and Family Affairs, another for Bugs, etc., plus they've all served their time on the soaps. It seems to be the only way in these days. Varied experiences to say the least.

Interesting to see there are people on here with DHs in creative industries. (DW is starting to think she's on her own as everyone she knows seems to have a DH/DP in a "conventional" job - i.e. one that earns a regular salary!) To read some threads on here you could come away with the idea that everyone's DH is a stockbroker, accountant or company director with regular bonuses and frequent trips abroad!!

Crikey! Well good for you for helping to support him - even if he doesn't let you watch certain programmes
And I'm sure he'd have made a better Egg - I've always found Andrew Lincoln a bit monotonous as well.

Hi Boing. Yes he has done them but I would say he only gets about one job in ten he auditions for so those are no great odds for a father of four.

I'm not being funny, and I'm really not intending to insult your DH's acting ability, since yes, most drama and acting on tv is shite, but, errm, I thought most actors had done Casualty, Holby City and the Bill, purely cos they have such a high turnover of stories etc.? Please excuse my ignorance and don't come and beat me up In fact, maybe your DH should be PROUD that he don't have them on his cv!

PMSL Enorm'. My dh insists the reason he doesn't get the Casualty gigs is that he acts too well. Actually, I believe him but then, plus ca change!

TV drama is a load of old shite to be fair on them. There's rarely room for real talent.

I'd better take on a bit more work. Just for now you understand. Just in case.

you can tell a lot about a man from his haircut. and the fact he thinks the excorsist is the best film ever made. wtf?!

don't mention holby or even worse casualty word round these parts... he froths when he hears the opening theme. before i met him but obviously a deeply traumatic experience. yes...big break...a-n-y minute now. who knows maybe the pilot sitcom he's writing now..? meanwhile, i'll have a lucky dip and six scratch cards.

Yes. Mark Kermode. The man who convinced me it was a good idea to take my dad and the kids to a Sponge Bob Squarepants film And I trusted him. Well, never again.

housemum - think that's a bit rich coming from mark kermode - how punchable is he?! quite a funny interview with rufus sewell in the guardian yesterday about being an actor. even he can't get the parts he wants!

Report
Spidermama · 10/12/2006 00:41

God very similar. DH hates all drama because it's crap - which is true (apart from the stuff your dh writes if course), but would still leave a family holiday in Cornwall for the day (real life case) to go to a Holby audition.

Still, their big breaks are just around the corner eh? Let's face it we have better odds than the lottery so hang on in there.

writer. poss worse (or seems that way today!). dunno, close thing i think. the rejection thing is a pita - i think that must be similar for both groups. dh hates all drama cos he hasn't written it. he also hates what he has written because it's not what he wants to be writing...

I hope she's too young to take it personally housemum.

Egg is pretty much like his name. Like you'd give scrambled eggs to someone who's ill because they're not bad but not likely to cause offence - a safe but dull option. Be relieved that your dh was not safe-but-dull!

Was watching Mark Kermode talking films on BBC2 the other day and saying how he'd like to punch everyone who is in the film The Holiday as it's pants so can take perverse pleasure in fact that dd did not get picked for child-in-pushchair-looking-at-Jude-Law!! (She was in last 3) That'll be our one-that-got-away for years!

ECALM thank you for agreeing with me about Egg. Is your feller an actor too then? It's a tough old life being married to one isn't it?

spidamama, thought it was just our house with a long long list of progs to boycott. nice to know someone else in same boat. you have my sympathy! i think you're right about egg btw. he's annoying and not very good.

Report
Spidermama · 10/12/2006 00:22

My dh was down to the last two in auditions for the part of Egg. He didn't get it. Consequently I was unable to watch This Life as it has joined the lengthy list of the-ones-that-got-away which would have paid our mortgage.

What do you think of Egg btw? I think he's a shite actor but, as you'll appreciate, I'm biased.

Just been trying to catch up with the stack of episdes on the Sky box - I'm sure I don't remember hating the characters so much!! Always wanted to smack Rachel, but Millie is soooo uptight, Miles is just a w**ker, O'Donnell a sleazebag. Why didn't I see it back then? Was I up my own behind too...?

we are taping them every night and watching them next evening!! great stuff.

I can't bear O Donnell, something about the way he over pronounces his words makes me cringe. The character I love is Kelly the receptionist- so funny " Lanzarote - where's that then?" CLASS !!!
