Which sanitary towels does your daughter use?

I need to get prepared to my daughter starting her periods, and I'd be grateful if you could let me which sanitary towels your daughter likes to use. Think I'm going to buy 2/3 lots combination of styles, sizes but it would be handy to know what works for other girls.

Although I'm 15 I just started my period recently (in October) and I used the Always Silk range.

I'd recommend them for 'starters' because they're super soft and therefore less uncomfortable.

If she'd like to use tampons, I think that Tampax Compax are great because they're small and can easily be popped in her purse or jeans pocket, and the pastic applicator means stress free application too.

Maddog. So sorry just realised you were original OP. DD1 uses tampax mostly but anything with wings as back up. And we buy anything on offer that is unscented!

DD1 was on the swim team so tampax from 2nd time. I was the same as I rode competitively so tampax from the beginning except my mother back then thought lillets more modern - had to ask her to swap!
Suspect DD 2 will do the same.

Both my dd's normally use asda's own towels, or boots, but they must not have wings.

Neither will use tampons or even give them a go.

I was the complete opposite, and used tampons almost right away.

Juggling, she was. She's not had any problems and they are much more discrete as she can just shove them in her pocket and go, Fits in a shy teenagers life much more easily.

Do you mean she was using tampons with her first period BadKitten ?
I was so pleased to move on to tampons that I'd be happy for DD to do this I think ( but crazily I didn't think tampons were an option until my friend told me about them at about 17, even though my Mum used them. She didn't talk to me much about periods - just the essentials ! )
So, what does everyone think about timing of DD's moving on to tampons if they want to try them ?

Dd was on normal lilets by day 3 (teen ones on day 2 wererubbish) she also wore a towel just in case at first while she learned. S they don't always need teen stuff.

Good thread for me as we're at the same stage - DD nearly 14 and waiting (well, I am a bit, and nervous. Also feel lucky she'll be a late starter as I was)

I felt a bit better after the Lil-lets web-chat on here recently and ordered some bits from their web-site including a Starter kit ! Hoping DD's will be fairly light as mine were as a teenager - and hoping the choice of modern products will make things better for her than the dreadful san-pro that we had to make do with.
When I discovered tampons I thought they were the world's greatest invention !
Perhaps DD will be able to use them from quite early on too, especially as she's nearly 14 ?

piratecat, hope your daughter's periods settle down soon. I can remember the same thing. I had periods every two weeks lasting eight days, the first day I'd have to change every hour and sometimes I fainted with the pain. As you can imagine I was always having major accidents at school, but luckily I had two teachers who I could go to immediately and they would even wash and tumble dry my skirt. Luckily theres a much better choice of sanitary products now and hopefully the doctors are able to give better advice and treatment. Really hope my daughter doesn't have to suffer like I did.

When the snows cleared need to go and get my selection, pants, a little toiletry bag for school and wipes. It's like planning to go on holiday!

DD1 finished her first period a couple of weeks ago. I'd already bought some of the Lilets Teens ones as a "just in case" backup, and also because they came in a pretty little drawstring bag that didn't make it obvious what they were, iyswim. I've bought some more, and she's also tried the Asda/Tescos own make I have but hasn't expressed a preference. Agree they need to be individually wrapped to keep them clean and also make it less obvious what they are. Also bought her a little pvc cosmetics case to keep them in, just for that extra bit of privacy.

My DD has a drawer in her bedroom that replenish reguarly. She has a wide choice - I generally buy whats on offer but she has winged, unwinged, body form, tesco own etc. She does like the Lilets pads - not just the teen ones, the other ones as well. DD also uses night time pads (the thin but loner ones).

I did find I had to invest in some briefs for DD - or some better cut pants because she generally uses girl boxers and the ones with the seam in the gusset are not good for sticking a pad (winged or unwinged) to. She has some boring briefs in dark colours or dark patterns for her period and calls them her period pants.

my dd has just come back from the Dr's, as her periods are so bad, and we await the decision from the local hosp as to whether she can have the pill or not. It's all down to licensing, as she is nearly 11. Unfortunately her hormonal body is more like 13. She is on adult pain killers, so i can't see the difference. School affected, lessons affected. This has nothing to do with this thread, sorry but just expressing myself.

I agree with piratecat about the black knickers. And I make sure my DDs always have a little bag in their school bags with a couple of towels and a spare pair of pants. I told them that if their period ever starts unexpectedly and their pants are stained in school, just to throw them away instead of carrying them around all day. (Obviously if it happened at home I would just wash them!)

Dd hated towels because they felt so sweaty, so quickly went to tampons. She prefers lillets - anything with an applicator unnerved her. I remember buying a variety of sizes for her.

She had a terrible time at first because of heaviness and pain, tried menlafamic acid and then went on the pill. I was no help really as my periods are so non existent that I don't have to use anything. But drs are very good at helping with heavy periods now so no need to suffer in silence with a bar of chocolate like Just 17 magazine used to advise.

oh and get black knickers. i bought size 8-10 for dd, from primark. saves staining, and looks less scary when there are leaks.

Morrisons own pads. normal ones in a purple packet. long enough, padded andthey absorb!! have tried everything with my dd age 10. 80p a pack!

CinnamonCandle, soaking pants brought back memories - there were always some soaking in an old saucepan under the stairs when I was growing up. Will encourage her to use older pants when the times comes, but luckily have quite a good spray from Tescos.

Also stock up on some Vanish for any leaks/unexpected accidents, I was pleased it removed stains from DDs pants no problem. My mum always used to leave mine and my sister's pants to soak in a bowl on top of the washing machine
