No Cybil you are not too harsh. God knows i need a kick up the bum really. I just wish wish wish I had the guts to go and buy something colourful and be able to hold my head up wearing it. But I just dont seem able to. I love pink, I did buy a pink jacket once and wore it for a wedding (with black of course!) I used to wear Navy (years and years ago) back in the 80s I think. I wouldnt dream of wearing a skirt or dress now!!

you aren't that fat anyway, more roundy
some truly fat people have tons of style and flair
some truly skinny people have an appalling sense of style and idea how to use colour

black is just an absence of colour and no way to proceed

start gently with navy, all shades of grey, teal flashes of white, camel etc all accessorised
it can be interesting playing with different textures and shapes in the same colour

have a go better to have a try and get it wrong than try to slink around miserably in the background

So what if they talk? It would prob be to say 'coo she looks dead nice today, what a change from black'

hope I wasn't too harsh before...it makes me feel bad to think of you cowering under your black clothes

never too late! but you clearly have a strong urge to move away from "safe" black, otherwise you wouldn't have asked.

compare these 2 alternatives:

wearing the clothes you do now, in a range of toning neutrals
wearing the clothes you do now, in a riot of colour

which appeals most? which is scariest?
do you have a style icon, someone who's dress sense you admire? or have you ever seen an item of clothng and wished you had the balls to wear it?

This is my friend's style blog - she is short and fat and I don't think I've ever seen her dress in black. Go get ideas

If they talk it will only be compliments! If not poke them in the eye. Start of with little pieces.

I don't mean this in a horrible way, but people aren't that interested in you, (or any of us). You are building this up in your head to be bigger than it really is

I could sit here and cry. I am very stylish with what i do wear, everyone comments on how smart and stylish I am. Im 50 next month and dont look my age. But I feel like im in such a rut now with the black that I just cannot escape. If i was to start wearing colours to work now, I would be the talk of the office! It feels like ive just left it too late to change and of course im scared to anyway.

Break yourself in gently and wear navy or grey, like sea says wear a bright scarf. Black is very unflattering - unless you're a goth?

yes maybe you are. There is no point in us dishing out EXPERT style and beauty advice to an atttractive larger lady who doesn't want to be noticed.

It's all about being noticed baby!

Although, like, aura is kind of about colours too, hey

Report
stakethroughtheheartofgold · 25/10/2009 21:15

but you said yourself, you come across as confident and facially you're very attractive - you are already being noticed (and we are ). accept it. embrace it.

Report
LetThemEatCake · 25/10/2009 21:15

Nonsense. People notice people who are trying not to be noticed. It's an aura thing, not a colour thing.

Report

Im scared of being noticed I suppose. If I wear bright colours people will notice me.

It would suit you though, you just keep telling yourself it wouldn't.

You are the size you are. You can't hide that. So stand tall, be proud, wear lovely colours, and if you want to start tackling your weight, without hating yourself for it.
