Style and beauty

right, please tell me why strapless dresses are the norm for weddings? I think they often look like a bridesmaid has wrapped a lilac towel around herself after a shower.

just coz its Friday night, I've had a g&t and this BUGS me. Brides usually look lovely because the dress, makeup and jewellery all works, but most bridesmaids do not suit strapless dresses.

when i got married i was skinny but with boobs (so bony shoulders, collarbone, & elbows) so I defo wanted sleeves.apart from the fact it was winter!

when i went shopping for a dress most shops just turned me away at the door as they only sold strapless dresses

i also had to get it made

T'was ivory silk crepe, bias cut with v neck and back and fishtail skirt

How sad is it that I have just bookmarked that page ?

I love the dresses in that pic Badger. That is exactly what I want my wedding dress to look like if I ever get married.

A nice autumn/winter wedding, so noone has to stand there all sweaty and horrible, with their make up slowly sliding down their face.

Not that I have given it much though obviously LOL.

I hate strapless wedding dresses. I agree with whoever said earlier that they seem disrespectful to me, but then I am very old..

Bridal shops are just full of strapless dresses - I didn't want strapless but the choice is so limited. I've ended up with a strapless dress but am having a dressmaker put some straps on for me.

For bigger ladies in strapless dresses, how do you feel the
(upper) arms on show?

If you are wearing a strapless dress to a wedding, bridesmaid or no, do NOT try to catch the bouquet

I find winter gowns are more interesting. They are more covered up and can look very smart.

I went to my mates dress fitting yesterday and she has had strapless and it looks lovely, and she is quite a big girl.

I have also had strapless and my looks nice now that the lady has let the top out a bit and I can breath LOL.

one of the worst bridesmaiding expeditions I had my friend made me wear an ice-blue BACKLESS strapless dress. Honestly, it had such a low back... and not only have I got huge norks, but also a scar between my shoulder blades where I had a mole removed by a useless bloody surgeon (other surgeons have exclaimed in horror and asked me 'who the hell did that?'

I had to go and buy special underwear in a vain attempt to hold my norks up...

Am soooo very glad I am now officially too old to be a bridesmaid ever again.

Agree that just about every wedding gown I see on brides today is strapless. Even if the bride is slim, tall with good shoulders, it looks a bit boring, whatever the detail on the bodice or shape of the skirt.

Needless to say, I did not have a strapless gown - it would not have suited me anyway. Going against all convention, I had a soft column gown with high boat neckline and gentle embroidery on the front with a plunging draped back that went as low as it could whilst retaining my modesty. It was more flattering for my, erm, then Audrey Hepburn figure and had to be custom made because it is not something you can just find off the rack in bridal shops.

No, my wedding dress wasn't strapless either but it was 9 years ago

I'm hoping my friend doesn't choose a strapless dress for me as my boobs are too big (not in the good way) that I don't fancy spending all day pulling the dress up.
