They are actually dark red. OP the leather is quite stiff, so make sure you wear socks with good thick ankles in case it rubs. That's my only problem with them but they look great on. Better than in your photo.

hmmm, i like an ugly shoe as much as the next ugly shoe loving person but there's something not nice about these

not shoe-y or boot-y enough for my liking and the colour is that colour that's not brown enough.

Yes, like kind of..., they look like quite a stiff leather though, so would imagine they are not comfortable everyday wear.
