What are yours?

Me

  1. No boobs and legs, one or the other
  2. No socks with sandels
  3. No socks with skirts
  4. No showing of sockage with long trousers on
  5. No bra straps showing
  6. No black underwear under white clothes
  7. No low cut so you can see boobage
  8. No trousers flapping around the ankles
  9. No pockets on boobs

10. No denim with denim
11 None of those trainer socks
And I'm sure there are loads more

Where did all these rules come from?

No high heels
No pointy-toed shoes
No navy
Warm colours only - I like grey, but only warm grey, not bluey grey.
No bare legs above the knee
No fit-and-flare skirts or dresses/skater dresses. Full from the waist yes, but flaring out from the hips noooooooooo.
Bright colours, but not primary colours. So mustard but not canary yellow. Raspberry, but not postbox red.
There is no print too insane, to big or too mad. I LOVE print.

  1. No beige, taupe or other 'nude' colours, apart from shoes.
  2. Able to wear a decent bra underneath, so no spagetti straps/strapless clothes for me!
  3. No heels, as I can't walk in them!
  4. No flares, or boot cuts, particularly when it's wet and you get creeping damp up your legs.

I like to mix things up and wear navy and black together.

I'm short and fat so no horizontal stripes for me, along with I only choose v shaped necklines.

And cropped trousers - yuck!

Ooooh, and no painted on surprised eyebrows. Looks weird with my blonde locks.

'Trainers go with everything'

This sounds wrong, but actually I know what you mean! Trainers do indeed look fine with just about everything. Happy feet all round Smile

I never judge others, but I hate and detest the whole "Towie" look that is popular in Essex (where I live, not stereotyping)

'Next question - do you judge others (silently) for breaking your own fashion rules?!'

I do judge some things - leggings worn as trousers, see-through leggings, ridiculously ill-fitting bras. However, just as often I see women breaking 'rules' and looking fantastic. I knew someone who was 5 foot 2 with massive boobs, who lived in black roll neck jumpers. Sounds shocking on paper but she looked really good actually. I have a friend who sometimes looks as if she's dressed in the first 5 things that fell out of the wardrobe that morning, but also looks fantastic. I judge her handbag though - not the style, but the fact that she has everything bar the kitchen sink in there! FFS woman, have a clear out every now and then!

Wear what you want, life is short, but avoid polo necks
no black near my face
white shirts suit me now I'm getting older
Yes to prints, but not flowery ones
Only wear shoes if they're comfortable and I can run, or at least walk very fast in them.
Trainers go with everything
Coats only worth buying if the wool content is high, and either very long or very short (like the new short wool jacket in Hush I have my eye on)

What's that you say Greentea, no patterns on fat bits? Gosh. that's patterns out for me then... I personally use it to camouflage some bits Grin.

Retainer I'm so with you on tight on top or tight on the bottom, but not both. How did I not remember this as one of my rules too?!

Barefoot I follow the pocket rule too. Poor highclasspappa does not understand why he must carry the car keys when I also have pockets!

Next question - do you judge others (silently) for breaking your own fashion rules?!

Great thread! These rules are just for me, everyone else can crack on Smile

Black or white bras and knickers only - keeps it simple
No empire lines (fitted under bust then draping loosely - instant pregnancy look when you have big boobs)
No jewellery apart from earrings and ring
No black next to face
Flat shoes / boots only
Leopard print is a neutral
Nothing skin tight or too small
Boobs or legs - never both. Usually legs
Eyes or lips - never both. Usually lips

Probably loads more.....

Gorgeous underwear. Always.
No more than two colours.
No patterns on fat bits.

No raglan cut jackets/tops as they just make me look like a lump (I have big boobs)
Always wear a decent bra
Never be afraid to at least try something new and different
No black unless I have had enough sleep (so basically no black!)
Keep pockets on suits/coats/jackets and smart trousers sewn up or empty
Nothing cut on the bias as it just doesn't suit me
No leggings or breton tops - nothing wrong with either item, I just overdid both every time I was pg
Always buy the best quality shoes you can afford and learn how to spit and polish

  1. Long tops with skinnies, at least semi-bum covering.
  2. virtually no prints. Not exactly a rule, just vanishingly rare for me to find a print in the right colours and scale
  3. No black. Not even leggings or shoes or piping etc. I hate it on me. Charcoal and almost-black are perfectly acceptable.
  4. No more than one bright colour in an outfit, with the occasional exception of the addition of bright nails, but even that feels a bit much.

Tight trousers/loose top
Loose trousers/tight top

No yellow, and no crocs.

Life's too short to not wear what I fancy.

Whenever I've worn a petty coat it always rides up inside the skirt using the tights for a helping hand. I avoid lined skirts for this reason. Nothing worse than walking around tugging down your skirt. And skirts have to be tested to make sure they are not those ones that you thighs decide to eat.

All these rules that I follow are my own rules. Not sure where they have come from! I am a restrained rebel.

I'm with PinkyPlumet: no real rules I follow.

However: I avoid pale greys as I think they wash me out. Avoid strapless tops as I can never get the bra right. Avoid on-the-knee dresses/skirts as feel they look frumpy on me.

These are rules that work for me rather than some dictate from others. My mother used to have this thing about never wearing a skirt without a "slip". Ridiculous. Can you even buy slips any more?

Cellardoor23 your post about see through leggings reminded me of a lovely dress I had when pregnant. Wore it with some very comfortable support knickers over the bump. Elegant I looked....until the photos were developed. The flash had somehow gone through the non-transparent dress and picked up the huge white knickers. Anyone else had this happen?!

And statement jewellery!

There's a theme of fear in my wardrobe I think...

Ooh I love a 3/4 sleeve. I have long arms mind you so have given up on finding a long sleeve that covers the wrists.

I generally write off anything with any King of slogan on - it feels silly somehow.

I keep coats dark and neutral. I avoid quirky anything.

I'm by no means stylish though. I think I look best - tallest and leanest - in head to toe slim-fitting black.

No muffin top! So I try to go for trousers that are high waisted.

No more than 2 pieces of jewlery at a time. Otherwise I feel too blingy.

No see through leggings! I tried to stop wearing leggings as I wanted to look a bit smarter. Caved in and bought some really thick ones (not see through) I have looked at them from every angle in the light lol they are so comfortable!

I have a no khaki near face rule nilbyname!

But am partial to a bit of red and black. But reluctant to put green and blue together.

Yes, what is it about lace? It's either old grannyish or tarty. I can't find a good lace look (for me).

As for blac, we here everyone wears black, all the time. I am adjusting but it's taken 6 years.

I love pink. But put it on and feel like a fat barbie.
