I have that issue.
‘Faith in Nature’ is the only one that doesn’t prickle me!
No nasties like sodium laurel sulphate etc and it’s 98% natural I believe.

OP- the 'how often should we shower' is an old chestnut on MN. I don't think there is any one answer because it depends on your skin. I shower in the morning for 5 minutes using a gentle shower product just under my pits, and have a soak in the bath at night. I don't have dry skin as a result. I've done this for decades and it suits me fine. My DP has quite oily skin and if he doesn't shower twice a day he ends up with a spotty back. Each to their own, I say.

I have had very itching skin after showering, but I now use the Nivea in-shower moisturiser. It has made a massive difference. It does work out expensive but not having itchy skin is worth it.

I have also switched to Fairy non-bio washing tabs and fabric softener. My OH and I both suffered from itchy skin, but we both feel better since we switched.

"Ok I did not ask if you think it's right that I shower twice a day that's my choice"

You asked for a solution to your problem. One of the answers was to take fewer showers. I'm sorry you dislike that answer, but it is one of the solutions. so you will just have to suck it up I'm afraid.

You described a problem, I supplied a possible reason for your problem, no need to take offence! Peace and love to you....

Have you tried having a slightly cooler shower? If you're like me and like a very hot shower, it can be quite drying for your skin which can lead to an itchy feeling. I'm not suggesting a cold shower - just a shower that's not quite as hot.

Gosh you seem a bit oversensitive if you take offence at the suggestion that two showers a day could be making your skin worse...would you also be annoyed if a dermatologist told you that? Several dermatologists have given me and my children this advice over the years.

And hands often get more eczema and dry skin because of hand washing.

Ok I did not ask if you think it's right that I shower twice a day that's my choice, I find a quick morning shower quicker and easier than a wash at the sink!
Also Ive tried lots of sls free natural stuff etc and sctually found them very drying! Aveeno and sanex (even the zero)were awful on me so just goes to show everyone's skin is different.
I worked out it was because of the simple shower gel I had started using, I went back to my usual dove one and it's fine.
As a side note I actually wash my hair bending over in shower as don't like doing it standing up (I'm weird) so u knew it wasn't a shampoo/conditioner problem.

Thanks to all of you who gave me a product suggestion rather than just coming on to tell me I shower too much!

People with dry skin conditions are encouraged to use the right products but not to bathe more often Confused

Kelda- it's perfectly fine to use water on your body more than once a day. Just like we wash our hands- hopefully- more than once a day.
Plain water unless it's terribly hard water, doesn't damage the skin. I only use shower gel on my arm pits and the rest of my body gets doused in tepid water. Some people with dry skin conditions are actually encouraged to shower or bathe with the right kind of products to help put moisture into the skin.

Shower twice a day if you like, but then don't be surprised if you have dry, itchy skin. Body lotions can never substitute natural skin oils.

Report
PollyPerky · 14/07/2016 09:16

And one shower a day is more than enough. Showering twice a day will dry out your skin even more, stripping it of it's natural oils.

So what about those of us who exercise during the day? Go to bed smelly? Go to work smelly?

You don't have to use shower gel or soap all over- just your pits as someone said. Plain old water is good enough for the rest . And there's this thing called Body Lotion- great for putting moisture back in the skin.

Your skin does not need washing twice a day - you are washing all it's protective natural oils off it and it is deeply unhappy.

The main reason shower gel makes you itchy and dries your skin usually is SLS or SLES in the shower gel (and if that doesn't get rid then shampoo with it in running down your back), plus washing too often and scrubbing too much of your skin.

Daily showers is fine and shower gel only on the bits that smell - under arms, boobs, groins and feet.

There are loads of SLS/SLES free shower gels - Aveeno, E45, Jasons, Earth friendly baby, Balneum - the list goes on and on.

Dove, Simple and Sanex all have SLES in and are not kind to skin at all.

I read once that often people who think they are allergic to their shower gel are actually allergic etc to the shampoo they use as it runs down all over your body as you rinse your hair. Maybe try changing your shampoo if you are struggling to find a shower gel that suits?

or try using aqueous cream

try using plain unscented soap for your armpits and bum/feet and then some oats inside muslin or tights and use that . This is what I used for my dc when they were little with sensitive skin

I would look at a shower gel for dry skin, such as Aveeno or Balneum. And make sure the water isn't too hot.

The only thing that works for me is Simple Soap. Even their shower gel makes my skin sore and itchy. And fairly tepid water!

Report
BluePitchFork · 14/07/2016 07:44

bar of soap.
shower as short as possible with as cold water as you can.

I like showering twice a day too op, but i only do a proper all over body wash with shower gel once a day. In my other shower I just do pits and bits with soap and just let the rest of my body get wet!

TBH showering twice a day is not unusual or excessive. There is no way I could face the day without a quick shower after sweating during the night and a shower is much quicker than an all over wash with a flannel. Ditto end of day- who goes to bed with the day's sweat on them? I don't 'wash' my back in the shower, just use plain water. I do have a bath at night.

I think the OP may have adult acne or it's the shampoo that's causing the issue- never wash your hair in the shower because whatever you're using goes all over your body.

Report
angryangryyoungwoman · 13/07/2016 23:15

I think the showering twice a day is your issue. You are stripping your skin too often.

Oh I forgot to add, if you condition your hair and wash it off after you've already soaped up, the conditioner residue stays on your back and maybe that is blocking up your pores? I always used to soap my back last and it's made such a difference. Just keep your hair away from your back afterwards too
