Boys winter coat - a challenging brief

Looking for a boys winter coat roughly age 11-12 but a few very specific requirements.

DS has SN and uses a wheelchair. He needs a coat that is very warm but not too bulky eg down/puffer isnt great, makes it harder to lift or support him around the body. Must have a hood to keep out the wind and be long enough to cover his waist when sitting. Waterproof is less important as if it is raining he's probably going to be hiding under wheelchair cover .

A hooded decent wool coat is ideal, bonus points if it is still a bit fun or brightly coloured. Previous years Verdaubet duffle has done the job well but not so keen on the quality and styling this year. I have one on order as I haven't seen anything better but not convinced.

Wondering if if missed something.

Is this duffle coat from John Lewis any good?

In style perfect but too short. Liable to leave a gap around the kidneys as my Nana would say (especially when he flops onto the floor).

Needs to be a good mid thigh length so he can sit on it and cover his back in the chair. I forgot to that bit

Patagonia Infurno Jacket

I have the adult version of this. Very, very warm indeed (as warm as down) but much less bulky. The adult one is thigh length, I imagine the kids's is too. Awesome coat, extremely warm, very good quality.

That goverall one is perfect. In every respect. I love the large toggle fastening means he should be able to do it himself too.

However realistically it probably is out of my price range. I might be able to do it but it's more than would be comfortable

Not sure about that pantagonia one... Either the length or the fastening.

I know you said no to puffas but have a look at decathlon there's lots of different styles.He'd be an xs for sizing I guess.

On the model the uniqlo ones I think are a little on the short side. Does anyone know in real life?

I like the landsend one (and not so bad with 20% off) more that the patches on the Boden one (sat in his chair with a blanket on his lap and the patches he can look a little like an old granddad ).

Snow jacket is too short, unless it does get really cold and I end up investing in snow trousers as well

most of the decathlon stuff doesn't appeal at all, however this one from Quechua looks ok. anyone any idea on the length of it?

I'm guessing insulated would work as it's not too puffy

Just wanted to point out that if you do like the Gloverall, they are often available on Ebay for much less. This one for example is not brand new but seems as good as - and in a quick search I just did, there are some that are new / tags. Worth bearing in mind.

I bought myself a Gloverall recently and it's absolutely gorgeous.

It's worth adding that Lands End are typically great quality, I always buy my boy coats from there and they are fab. 25% off at the moment.

I should have said, sorry. DS who is three has the age 3-4 and its knee length. He is big for his age and takes a 4-5 in most clothes, so I think it's quite long.

I might hold on the lands end until I have had a look at the other two options.

Have you looked at sports clothing, either rugby sub or football bench coat. This one might be too long and I don't think has a hood.
