Hey,

I originally posted this in chat, but then got a few suggestions to put it here, which makes sense really! Smile

My dp and I have been together for 3 years and we recently got engaged Smile We're both feminine, but my dp is definitely less so and pretty much lives in her jeans, converse and various geeky comic book t shirts grin So you can imagine my surprise when we were looking at wedding dresses, what I thought would be for me and she starts drooling over the extra pretty pretty, floaty, feminine dresses, for her! I didn't necessarily think we'd be having the 'typical' one in a dress, one in a tux weddings, but I wasn't expecting her taste to be more traditional than mine! Obviously she can wear what she likes, but I'd like us to compliment each other. I've seen some lesbian weddings where the brides are wearing identical dresses and it's just not for me. Also, I'm not really into the whole rainbow style wedding. Don't get me wrong, I completely support what it symbolises, obviously, but I'd prefer it to just be about us iyswim.

Ok, so I'm a size 10, 5 8", long dark hair, pale skin and green eyes. I'm nearly 31. My dp is a size 12, same height, mid-long reddish hair and is also pale. She is 28.

I would love something elegant, fitted and slightly sexy. Possibly with a bit of lace and probably strapless.

So, any ideas? smile

Is this the sort of shape you're after?

What's the budget?

The dress you originally picked is breathtaking.

pants, thanks for the links. I think I prefer the second. I'll have a proper look at the website later

linus, showing our personalities is very important to me. Sounds like your friends got it spot on.

My friends both wore a dress in a similar colour on their wedding day but the style was completely different as they have very different tastes and body types.

They even had a different style of bouquet but with the same flowers. One had a big bunch of gorgeous peonies whereas the other had the same peonies included in her much more elaborate bouquet.

Oh and one had her hair up whilst the other had her hair down.

They both looked gorgeous and co-ordinated whilst being true to their personalities.

Grin man up?! Brilliant.

Queen, yes we'd be having bridesmaids, one being my daughter and probably best men. I think my dd is expecting to wear a smaller version of my dress. Might be slightly inappropriate Confused

I would like the colour scheme to be subtle. I don't want anything over the top or bright. Maybe like a peaches and cream? Although I think we might be too pale to carry that off.

Rock n Roll Bride is great for inspiration for weddings of all sorts. Quite a few lesbian weddings where both brides are wearing dresses. This one is rather lovely but plenty of others.

And this one - both full on wedding dresses in very different styles but holding the same flowers.

That's gorgeous notthe. If you're both going for traditional dresses then I think the suggestion of the same shop would be good. Are you keeping the dress a suprise from each other?

Are you having bridesmaids/best men etc as you'll need to think what they're wearing if you want them to co-ordinate too? Also think about flowers and colour scheme. That obviously depends if you're going in for all stuff though.

I think one of you in a pale grey dress and one in white could look lovely, although I'm not sure if either of you want an actual, traditional style wedding dress or not (?). I'm thinking of a beautiful grey silk column dress for one of you, because it would be really simple and elegant.

Sorry, whoever posted it, but that lace jumpsuit is insane! Grin

and weird? man up OP

Report
BadgersArse · 06/05/2015 19:42

yes but the standard wedding planning presumes that
a) anyone gives a fuck if it coordinates
b) everyone stands next to each other all night

I think black and white looks best at weddings

Arse, yeah I'm not sure I ever said I wanted matching dresses Confused I know of women who do like the idea of staying fairly matched and I think the word "weird" is fairly harsh to describe it.

Te, I actually love the idea of Grecian. The only problem with that dresses tend to be floaty and not really fitted, which isn't quite what I@m going for. I want something which is going to suck in my waist within an inch of it's life on my big day Grin I linked to my favourite dress so far in the original thread in chat. Here it is...

As far as venues go, well we're definitely not getting married in a church or registry office. Just not our thing, so either outside, which is obviously stupid brave, or a fancy hotel. It's really early days though, so nothing is set in stone. Oh and we live in Cambridgeshire, but tbh it wouldn't have to be here.

I love the two j crew looks, drool. Pricey though.
Actually have a look at the j crew bridesmaid section - often lovely pale colours like champagne/gold/apricot etc in lots of different styles. Their customer service is pretty helpful too.

The only problem I can see with you both wearing the same colour is that in might not suit both of you.

Your colouring suggests you would suit a crisp white where as you DP may be better suited to Ivory / champagne colour dress. I'm sure if you go to a good wedding dress shop the assistant would be able to help you both get something that suits and goes well together.

I didn't think anyone had suggested 'matching' Confused

TeWiSavesTheDay · 06/05/2015 17:12

Congratulations!

When my friends got married they both had dresses in a similar style (Grecian), but different. It looked really together but not matchy-matchy.

If you both went for lace that could look beautiful.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 06/05/2015 17:05

Matching would be two dresses the same Badgers

Coordinating / not clashing / looking good next to each other is fairly standard wedding planning, isn't it?

Report
OneLittleLady · 06/05/2015 16:50

congratulations Thanks

I think the idea of having the same colour dresses and/or same or complimenting colour accessories is a very good one. complimenting colour or style accessories would be my choice if it were me as I think they would be very personal to each of you, if that makes sense.

I hope you have a brilliant time planning your wedding

Honestly I think if you go for the same colouring you can't go wrong with different styles. Formal wear is formal wear, so as long as you are both similarly 'dressed up' it will go.

What time of year are you getting married? I think formal coats are lovely in an autumn/winter wedding, you could have very similar dresses with different fitted jacket/shawl in complementary colours to tie in.

Report
ChangingTiming · 06/05/2015 13:51

Depends on if you want to know what each other is wearing/pick them out together or pick them out so its a surprise.
Defintiely wear what you both want to wear, have seen friends family wedding pictures and they are both in full skirted traditional dresses yet different to suit figures and looks great

Hadron21 · 06/05/2015 13:48

How about agreeing on a style, like 1920s and then buying separate dresses. You could always go for vintage then.
Complimentary hair accessories would be good but I would avoid matchy matchy as the danger is you'd end up looking like two bridesmaids.
Congratulations. Ignore the negative comments. I'm just wishing I had lesbian friends who were getting hitched as I love wedding planning and dress shopping.

How about something like this for you (the reviews say that there is a slit in the side, so I think it ticks your lace / elegant / sexy boxes)

Then there are lots of other dresses on the J Crew website that would coordinate beautifully - though I love love love the jumpsuit in the same lace

I was one of the posters on your first thread who suggested starting a thread on S&B. Starting to feel a bit bad about after the unnecessary comments earlier :(

If you don't want to see each other's choices before your wedding day, I like the idea of going to the same shop but separately, so that they will know each of your favourites and help make sure both dresses compliment one another.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 06/05/2015 13:14

To restart the thread a little....

You are after two complementary dresses, yes?

Where is the venue and what is the budget?

(And congratulations!)
