How would I know if I had a gap!

People talk about shopping for 'gaps' in their wardrobes. Hw would I know if I had one? :(

It's obvious if I need to replace something that's worn out but what are these 'gaps' and how do I identify them?

Yes, I'm an idiot when it comes to shopping and wardrobes but I'm trying to learn

I would have no gaps if I could stay the same weight for more than 6 months. FIL passed away recently, I had to make an emergency trip to next (the horror) for funeral attire. Here in Ireland funerals take 3 days and start within 24 hrs of the person dying. Makes it a bit manic. When MIL got home from hospital, there was a stream of her friends with food and their best black outfits to loan. It was so sweet.

I like the idea of yoga pants and a cashmere or merino or just lovely-feeling hoodie.

My current hoodie is really chunky sweatshirt material and makes me feels huge!

I've been wearing linen trousers 'at-home' through the warmer months but will change for autumn/winter into something warmer.

The yoga pants I've looked at are too thin and leave nothing to the imagination in the anatomy dept

In the mean time Celtic and Co do more straight cords in lots of nice colours if, like me, you think skinnies are an abomination unto (chunky) thighs ...

Oh I know that feeling! I am in the process of doing a Pinterest board with anything I like the look of to see if I can put together some stuff I like and will actually WEAR. Do you want to give us an idea of what you like ( or hate) and we can make some suggestions?

KristinaM you hit the nail on the head there for me. .. my wardrobe is full of clothes that match the lifestyle I aspire to. so my big gap is SAHM /casual wear. and I can't find anything I like to fill this gap.

I think in terms of two or more items which I could wear together if I just had x...( usu the right colour CAMI or different shoes IME)

I seem to have a 'gap' whenever I find an empty coat hanger.... any excuse for shopping

I think you look at your clothes and your lifestyle and make sure they match up

So if you are a SAHM and have wardrobe full of office clothing then you have gaps for casual stuff

So you shop for the life you actually have and not the one you used to have or aspire to .

Having a gap in your wardrobe is a justification to buy something new . It's about needing something that will make items work together or work for another occasion so eg a jacket to smarten up casual outfits or a certain coloured something iyswim.
As mrscb says it's about having things in your wardrobe for all occasions. I often used to panic buy for nights out until I looked at what I really needed (ie the gaps in my wardrobe) and now know I have about 3 suitable outfits. The only thing I wouldn't be able to pull together right now is a wedding outfit but as I have none in the distant future I won't let that gap worry me.

56 here also, I bought some of those pyjama type trousers, I didn't look all fashionable in them just looked like some old bag lady. They went straight back. I think I will stay with my cords

Just a baby cardigal...I'm 56. It's a difficult age. I've just given 2 unworn dresses to my daughter as I am too old to wear them. Ghastly realisation.

Well, turning serious I reckon that every grown up person should be able to dress from their existing wardrobe for stuff such as:

• wedding
  
• funeral
  
• work
  
• night out
  
• etc etc
  

If you can't - then you have a 'gap'.

And lordy, I'd kill for a thigh gap at the moment.

They look great light love the aubergine cords! Ive never bought online though as I have to get the fit and feel right. I don't have a credit card to buffer the costs of buying loads and returning either.

I like the idea of cords light I find chinos a bit baggy around the zip area and jeans a bit too restrictive. Thanks.

But then what are all these folk on here doing buying like billy-oh? Everyone seems to be buying clothes! (Even those that said they wouldn't in August)

It's all too easy really, just a few bits here and there...

I need to concentrate on the casual stuff - it's all getting a bit office-wear in my wardrobe.

Yes mrs that sounds good. I need a few casual bits!

Even though I don't own a white shirt or a trench coat - or indeed an LBD - I don't see them as gaps because I don't need them filling

I think they mean they've, for example, got several tops and, say, some boots that only work with one of the 'bottoms' they have. Possibly. Or maybe, 'Oh, I have no little black dress'.
