Best facial sun screen for under make up?

u32ng · 02/06/2014 14:40

Maybe I'm hoping for too much but I care about protecting my face in the sun & want to get a sun cream I can wear under my makeup (or alone also).

Don't want it to make me look shiny-faced in ANY way! Just want my normal face, but with sun protection!

Also ideally, non-pore clogging, non-whitening, and won't make my make up 'furr' up when I put it on underneath.

Does anyone know a good one?

I second the Mac prep and prime spf 50. Not greasy and great with or without makeup on top. Quite expensive for the size you get though.

I have found Sainsbury's 50 SPF for Sensitive skin (not their normal one) is the only sun-cream that doesn't make my eyes water or creep into my mouth and taste disgusting. It's cheap but has 5* UVA protection.

Bit of an update re the Eucerin.
The tinted stuff is waaaay to dark for someone fair skinned. I've had to mix it 50/50 with the Mattifying Sun Fluid. For some reason, it's now very greasy looking, even though each product is matt on its own.

See, I knew that Blush

I know you have to apply a good sized blob to get factor 50 (or indeed, the stated factor of any sunscreen), so I figure even if I'm only applying 1/3 to 1/2 the recommended amount, I'm still getting factor 15-20.

No I don't think you get factor 100 :o
And you gotta apply pretty thickly to even get factor 50

Just tried the La Roche Posay Anthelios gel yesterday. Really brilliant!!

It goes on like a thick white mask and I panicked. But keep pressing it into the skin gently and it does get absorbed- all of it. And yes, no white marks or an unsightly greasy face.

It settled into a lovely primed/powdered look, so I didn't even have to bother with any make-up. Winning formula...

Walnut, as far as safety goes I think you're right but my motivation is also wanting to avoid as much as possible the ageing effects of sunlight.

Call me vain but I go for factor 50 year round!

Am I right in thinking if you put on 2 50+ you still get 50 protection not 100?

Just to update, I've been using the anthelios one for a few days and it's great! No spots, really light.

Just back from boots where the extremely helpful assistant pointed me at the new Eucerin range. I got the mattifying sun fluid and thegtinted sun creme. Both 50+. The tinted was very dark but then really did adapt to a fair skin tone. They feel a bit strange but look fab. They both sunk in better than the LRP.

Another Clinique City Block Factor 40 - when it was unavailable for a while last year, I bought the Roche Posay Anthelios one, but it didn't compare at all - too greasy and gloopy for my skin, personally.

I also quite like the Ultrasun one too.

Assuming you live in the UK and aren't outside for a large part of the day every day ... surely the SPF in your moisturisers, primers and foundations is enough? You need a little sunlight for Vit D & many sunscreens contain a lot of chemicals that my face wouldn't tolerate on a daily basis. If you're on hols or something, then sure up the SPF to an actual sunscreen underneath your make-up during the day but otherwise for everyday, seems a bit unnecessary.

The best thing I've found fwiw is Becca mineral sunscreen.

Thanks for the info Letsface, bit puzzled as to why this would be the case though.
Wouldn't the cosmetic companies make sure that their sunscreens were up to the job? Confused

Not ROC - Clarins.

To the poster who asked whether the cosmetic brands are as good as proper sunscreen - I took my Bobby Brown/Roc/Clinique products with me to my final check up with the consultant dermatologist after having a rodent ulcer (cancer-but not nasty) taken off my nose. He said they weren't suitable and to use proper sunscreen. He did say why but I've forgotten. I did post here about it at the time if you really want to do a search - I may have written the reasons back then.

I had LRP last year. I found it made me look whiter and greasy but I'm v fair skinned. I've also had the dermatologist's recomended Sun Sense but that rolled into balls on my 'beard' Grin

I love Clinique City block factor 40 too. Someone else has mentioned it.

Bumping this thread to say that I was in Poundworld today and picked up a (Japanese) Coppertone oil-free sunscreen spf 27. I did a test and it's very light and non-greasy. I've seen Japanese Coppertone in the 99p Store before as well so well worth having a nose about. Japanese and Korean sunscreen is excellent by the way, they get extremely hot summers. I also got some alcohol-free aloe vera gel - it's a great primer as well as for soothing skin.

Afaik sunscreen has to be applied pretty thickly in order to do it's job so I suspect many of the moisturizers with spf won't have much effect?

I do like La Roche Posay and Roc suncare but can also recommend the Olay Complete Care Daily Moisturising Lotion with spf30 - got it half price and it was only a fiver, and it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin - I love it. I also rate City Block Sheer though much pricier and doesn't feel as moisturising to me.

The La Roche Anthelios factor 50 one is brilliant. I got it on offer in Boots for a tenner. Very light and absorbed into skin instantly with no grease.

Alpha h spf50 is really good. Non sticky, absorbs almost to powder like finish. Wore it out in strong sun and face was so pale at the end of the day, unlike the rest of my bod!

My BB cream is spf 45 - is this OK on its own without a separate sunblock underneath? I am fair skinned but staying in the UK.

Shiseido Expert Sun Ageing Protection Lotion is fantastic under makeup if you don't get along with La Roche Posay.
