Looking for boyfriend jeans with NO rips

I love the slouchy fit of boyfriend jeans. I have a pair from last year which are in constant use (M&S Indigo) and I really want another pair.

The trouble is, almost every pair I've seen in the shops are ripped. Shredded, threadbare, knees poking out....I don't mind a bit of distressing, but I'm 47, and just think it's too young a look for me.

They may look charmingly studenty on the youthful, but if I wear ripped jeans I look as if I've forgotten to change out of my gardening trousers.

Can you find me some suitably slouchy/boyfriend cut jeans that don't have rips? Below £50 please.

With DMs! Yes! We WERE cool. My favourite ever shorts - Levi cut off short but blue spotty fabric on the sides and to extend the legs. I want some now … Camden market for those babies.
And slightly off topic, tube skirts with hoop striped tights anyone? With DMs of course. Oh and a beret. That may have been a touch later?

Oh the memories this is bringing back ... getting my friend's Aunty Margot who was a dab hand with the sewing machine to take in jeans that were already calf-crushingly skinny (or "tight", as they were called back then).

And then having to lie on the bed with a coat hanger hooked into the hole in the zip to pull it up.

Flip! Whatever happened to Flip?! God, I loved that shop. Got my donkey jacket there, which was the best thing ever (in 1984). Even my mum approved as it was "a good warm coat for the winter".

dexter73 - my then boyfriend had vintage Levis jeans (Flip) with the Liberty patches fabric in and I had very short Levis cut-offs with matching fabric patches. Bless, we were 16 and thought we were so cool. And old vintage baggy men's suit jackets. Also from Flip. With DMs.

Can I just say thanks for the memoriesGrin Flip by favourite ever store, I had a second hand RAF jacket from there that I wore and wire and wore... Now have no idea when and where did I lose it?
Sigh...

I remember working away at the thread with a needle and sewing Liberty fabric in behind the rips.

We used to do this and make matching scrunchies with the fabric!

Thank you for doing all the hard work, Cointreau grin I too am 47 and 5.7, and have done the ripped jeans look back in the 80s, not doing it again. (Second hand Levi red labels from Flip...)

Ooh, yes thus exactly. I remember working away at the thread with a needle and sewing Liberty fabric in behind the rips.

While we're here, lets have a moment to remember Nick Kamen in and out of his 501s ... It'll set you up for the morning or possibly make you feel a wee bit old - i've not decided yet!

Trousers at half mast. Half mast = mourning. It confused me at the time - I had to question one of the gents involved as to the meaning of his quip.

Not sure where dead cats come into this, or am I too young to remember?

Report
AwkwardSquad · 13/05/2014 18:45

Ha, yes to both of those. And rolling your tight jeans up to just above ankles. Then having people shout 'has your cat died' after you in the street.

And sitting in the bath to shrink them to fit?
I was thinking about taking jeans in the other day and wondering how on earth I did it!
Also recommend ASOS Brady slim boyfriend (comes up big and long) and TOpshop Lucas slim boyfriend (very slim - more relaxed skinnies - and very short). No rips ...

Awkward - you must remember taking in your jeans, so they were even skinnier, then lying on the floor to zip them up. Then needing help to get them off again. Grin

M&S Indigo also have some nice rip-free boyfriends, presumably this year's version of the ones I already have. A bit narrower and less faded than the Gap ones, but worth a try.

Oh and we had to WORK for those rips back in the day! They didn't come distressed, we had to upset them ourselves! Young 'uns. Don't know they're born Wink

Reporting back from my quest for rip-free boyfriends....

River Island - nothing
Top Shop - nothing
Mango - nothing (I overheard the shop assistant say to her colleague " that's the first time I've ever been asked for boyfriend jeans with no rips")
Next - had a rip-free style, good price, fitted nicely at the top, but the hems were so wide that the roll-ups looked like little doughnuts around my ankles. No.
H&M - never made it there
Zara - there wasn't one
Primark - nothing
Gap - well, hello Sexy Boyfriend! And hello 30% discount on denim! We have a winner. I'll have to use a belt, but that's no hardship with boyfit jeans. Nice and soft/faded/distressed but rip-free. Although it's a long time since I've needed to use the phrase "sexy boyfriend".Grin

I popped into TKMaxx and spotted a pair of Levi Demi Curve skinny jeans, which I also tried on. They were sold as "seconds" because there was a tiny fault in the fabric on one leg. Oh, the irony....Grin

Do boyfriend jeans have to be turned up at the bottom? That seems to be the case looking at pictures in magazines etc

I love boyfriend fit jeans as they agree with my rugby player size thighs!!

Def recommend Gap's sexy boyfriend with them rolled up a bit, they tend to do a more lightweight version for summer, usually a ripped and unripped style,I got a pair on the sale rail so it is worth going on sale racks or in the outlets, plus keep an eye on grazia magazine as they sometimes do 30% off promotions

I am a Jack Wills convert, bought a pair of boyfriend jeans and they hold the shape beautifully - not a rip in sight!
