Is eye cream a big con?

I have always used normal moisturiser on my whole face, including eye area. But now I realise I have crepey skin around my eyes when I smile. I'm 38.

I am a bit sceptical about the claims made by skincare companies re antiageing, but I do wonder if eye cream is somehow better than normal moisturiser on the eye area.

What do you think?

I bought a Simple one the other day. My eyes get a bit puffy and are also quite wrinkly. It has made a bit of a difference I think. The puffiness has gone down at least.

They were doing buy two get on free the other day in a big well known chemist and I usually use their cleanser and moisturiser. So I just got it because it was free but it was less than £4 to buy.

But Tiger, shouldn't you be using the gentlest cream possible for the whole of your skin?

Any product that contains any colour, fragrance etc will be irritating to ALL your skin.

I thought the question was 'is eye-cream a big con?' and I was answering the question with YES!

I think some of you are confusing people using eye creams with people using eye creams because they think they prevent wrinkles.

As for needing a different cream for your eyes than your face, I get eczema on my eyelids and need a much gentler cream near my eyes than my face generally.

mamoanion if your face cream stings your eyes, it will not be doing any good for your face either, only irritating it, you need a different face cream!

Why would the skin being thinner around the eye mean you need a different product, other than you prefering a different textured cream.

If there was a magic ingredient in the eye-cream that is stopping wrinkles, then why is that not in your face-cream too? for example, retinol is known to help combat ageing skin and help it look less wrinkled, as are antioxidents like vitamin e, green tea etc and sunscreen. There is nothing that can be put in an eye-cream that you can't use on the rest of your face too.

You will probably find if you look at the ingredients that both your eye and face-cream from the same product line are similar. They just charge you more for the eye-cream (per ml) and, yes, they are very convincing at marketing it so you think you need it.

The Daily Mail did a feature 2 years ago on eye creams- might still be online if you search.

Simple came out the best at something like 3.99 a pot and much better than Clinique at £25.

I used to use eye cream some of the time. I haven't for years and TBH my skin is still good.

It's all bollocks about the skin being thinner so you needs diferent creams. Yes, the skin IS thinner so it will dry out perhaps more easily and wrinkle, but these lines are down to evaporation of moisture, UVA/UVB rays, and expression lines. You could just as easily use Vaseline- anything that stops the moisture evaporating. There have been loads of features etc in the press quoting dermatologists who say this.

You might like to use an " eye" cream because it's less sticky and gives a slightly smoother base for eye shadows, but honestly, it won't erase wrinkles or prevent them any more than any old cream would.

I have used eye cream since I was 20-I'm 30 mow and so far eyes look good but ageing is all downhill from here I guess!

But my real argument is that yes, to me eye creams do make a difference as I have quite allergenic skin. Clinique stings like mad if it gets anywhere near my eyes, as do loads of other brands. I use avene products on my face, which aren't to pricey, and currently have a nice eye cream by caudalie which was a bit of a treat. But it doesn't irritate my skin, products for whole face tend to leave flakey sore skin.

I can't use cream with spf in it around my eyes, cos it creeps into my eyes and stings like buggery .

I do agree with Isa to some extent, what you put on your face will be fine for your eye area , hence my recommendation for bravuras hyaluron serum.
I need a lubricant there as well though and prefer to use an eye cream that isn't too oily or has spf .

OK, carry on everyone, convince yourself your eye-cream is stopping your wrinkles, your money, your loss, the cosmetic company's gain.

I will continue with using my moisturizer (which has sunscreen) round my eyes (bet none of your eye-creams do).

I'm 38 and have been using eye cream since I was 16 and I don't have crows feet. I have one small line in the outer corner of each eye and some fine lines underneath as that's how my face creases when I smile/laugh.
i'll always use it I think
the rest of my face is ageing however

Why don't you look at the ingredients on your eye cream? What does it contain that is specific to the eye? If you use a moisturizer on your face why is it not good enough for they eye? Maybe you prefer a different texture round your eye to the face? that's fair enough, but don't kid yourself it will reduce your wrinkles more than your face cream. If your eye cream is better than your face cream you need to look at changing your face cream for a better one, as eye creams come in such tiny pots you can be nothing more than ripped of.

It's impossible to tell, you only get one life so you have no way of knowing whether the choices you made were better than the choices you rejected.

I have always used good quality skincare products and apparently look 25 when I am actually 40 but I may have looked like this anyway due to genetics.

Judge what feels nice and looks good and weigh up whether it's worth the money. The L'occitane one is the only one to have changed my appearance noticably in terms of eye cream. Neals Yard Beauty Sleep garnered me lots of compliments on my skin after a week of using.

I think the perfect anything is a bit of a holy grail though.

But the real test is- if those of you who think they work, stop using them and see if your wrinkles come back in a few days or weeks.

Most eye creams just plump up the skin and stop moisture evaporating- same as all moisturisers.


I'm 50s and have no wrinkles at all except for a few tiny ones at the corners of my eyes. My eye lids are slightly lined but that was due to using steroid cream for eczema- even 0.5 % did some damage.

Keeping the UV rays off your skin is really the best you can do, and avoiding squinting too much so that you don't end up with expression lines !

I've just started using Clinique All About Eyes, TBH I have always been skeptical about eye creams but I really think this one has lessened my lines.

I have quite creased eyes though, a remnant of reading far too much when I should have been asleep!

My eyes puff up if I use my usual heavy face moisturiser on them. The skin there is definitely different, so I can see the argument for using a different cream on them.

if you use Roc eye cream, it works you can get it on ebay for cheap! i've used it for ten years and my eyes aren't wrinkly compared to my friends...

another vote for the Eucerin Hyaluron filler, it's excellent. Vichy's eye creams are also uniformly effective, in my experience.

Clonique skin products are all packed with silicone, which is harmless, it just puts a temporary thin layer of silicone over the skin, hence the silky feeling.

Not a reason not to use it, but the effect is temporary ( silicome is often used as a primer as well, as it makes skin look more smooth).

I use eye cream as I have such dry skin aroidn the eyes, I find Bodyshop Wisewoman pretty harmless, it does the job, but only buy at half price online when they have an offer.

I also once bought the Imortelle one from l Occitane, which was very nice ( until my sister came to stay and liberally applied it daily, raving about it, and leaving me just a tiny bit...)

So if you find a nice gently moisturising one, it does feel nice.

The thing about fatty residue in eyes is also bollocks. The skin round your eyes is not different to the skin anywhere else, how could a moisturiser penetrate through your skin and put fat beneath it?

What is good for the face is good for the eye area also.

It was invented so they could charge you £££££££££s for a tiny pot of ordinary moisturizer.

I really really like this eucerin one.I am 50 and have noticed an improvement in the uder eye area using this one.

Some I find have too much water in them and do nowt.

You can also use a normal Hyaluron serum in the eye area as well, I use bravura's it does go on offer at times.

I also use retin a cream so it's probably amixture of all of them that has worked.

I do use the eye cream every morning to rehydrate the skin around my eyes.

I've been using a free sample of Clarins Beauty Flash eye cream and it does smooth out my fine dryness lines and brighten the skin round my eyes, making me look more awake. I guess its just the moisture plumping the skin and leaving a sheen but its nice :)
