Today i went for a bra fitting at M&S and was told by the 2 bemused/horrified ladies that i was unbra-able. No size fits me. I am a freak.

I have known this for years, but was hoping that they may have something for me.

So i think i may need to get some made to measure. Does anyone know of a good bra makers?

Now i'm pregnant too i am becoming very uncomfortable.

Cheers :)

op, just a thought, have you measured yourself under around your rib cage?

i ask because many retailers ie M&S measure you and then add on a couple of inches, because this is the way their sizing/method works ( or doesn't).

I remember Patricia soft cup bras being good for later pregnancy, and anita bras too. I had some Anita feeding bras from about 16 weeks on wards, and they doubled up for when the milk came in.

Hiya, I am a bra fitter and I totally understand and sympathise with the problem you have finding bras to fit your shape. It's not as uncommon as you'd imagine.

The suggestions about adding a centre section are good, if a little tricky. If you're near a branch, Bravissimo may be able to suggest something suitable or at least give you a more accurate estimation of your size.

I would suggest trying this in a large; you may find it better if you remove the pads. It's super soft so it won't dig Smile

married thanks i may try that when i'm more pregnant. but at the mo' i think i need something more shapely. I did go into bravissimo a long time ago and was told they didn't do a cups. Do they now? i thought they were for the boobier lady?

There was a brand called Beau Bra which had conventional bras with a hook and eye fastening, but also tied at the front. There seem to be a couple for sale on EBay. You may need to down a back size, but should have some "jiggle" room with the ribbon tie. Good luck, and I'm sure you don't look like a man in drag!

Don't add 4 inches, if you're 40 inches under then that's your band size.

can i just say spud - that i used to think i was a 34A. that was what i got when i measured. i was convinced.

i went to a local independent store and there was a lady who had years and years of fitting experience - she refused to sell me that 34A bra - just looking at me she guessed my size.

she then came with me into the booth, armed with bras, until she found me the perfect fitting bra. It was a 32B. ok, not masses different - but the difference in how it felt and how i felt was amazing.

if i were you, i would throw that tape measure away and go to see someone with years of bra fitting experience aka rigby and peller or similar (bravissimo)

ditch the tape measure.
let someone fit you by eye who knows their job. i can almost guarantee that you will not be what you think you are.
cheer up and go find out.

Thanks all - i see what you are saying about m&s but i have tried 40a's in other brands and they all don't fit. What is the variation between brands? is it not a universal size?

i think i will book at rigby & peller (altho i had a couple of friends who went there for wedding fittings and they said they thought it was awful). I know my breasts will change tho so don't want to splash out just yet. My upper body is really flabby and tends to carry weight, so as well as having tiny boobs i seem to have handfuls of flab over and under my bra and in my armpits and really fleshy upper arms but the rest of me is quite athletic and lean.

i really just cannot believe there is a company which would make a bra for my size, it must be so unusual. I always thought of m&s as the standard in bra fitting and ranges. I was hoping for the experience that others have shared - realising i was just in the wrong size and that there was something out there for me, that i could wear sexy underwear and i wasn't a mutant - but no. sadly not. just more reasons to feel shit.

Sorry, i know i'm whinging!

pirate Thanks, the triumph one is nice but i would only wear the royce one if i was nursing. it wouldn't give me any shape under clothes with no padding unfortunately.

spuddy, it must be hard. well, the two i linked to were two extremes.

I am very sure that there are more bras in a 40A.

If in M&S they were trying to find you a 44A then ok, that is more difficult.

M&S is not the way to go imo. Doesn't matter where i worked, i am not biased (cos it wasn't always a barrell of laughs there/ re your friends bad experiences) and i am a pretty standard size 34e, and M&S bras just don't fit nicely on me.

What about Debenhams, they have a good range. Do lots of makes. No sizes are not standardized, in much the way a pair of jeans isn't!!!

when you say a 40 a doesn't fit, in other brands, where doesn't it fit. I feel you mean the cup? rather than around the ribs?

Report
Spuddybean · 26/01/2012 19:50

sorry for being unclear. The 44 measurement was my own from looking online at how it is calculated. The m&s ladies were trying 38s & 40 a's and b's in all the ranges they had. The a cups fit but the proportion of the bras didn't. So each individual cup held up against a nork would feel great, but then trying to get the other nork into the other cup was the problem - the cups were just too close together/high up etc.

The fitters did actually suggest debenhams to me, so i will gather up what is left of my dignity and try there.
