UPDATE! 300 children die of hunger, every hour of every day. Can you please help Save The Children's work to stop this - and sign their petition?

Save the Children have asked us if we can help them change the fact that 300 children die of hunger, every hour of every day - even though there's enough food in the world for everyone.

What do you think? There's a petition here which they'd love you to sign - but they also want your thoughts on what they should be telling the G8 (the annual gathering of first world governments), who are meeting next week and actually have the power to change things.

So, if you could change the world so that no child died for lack of food - what would you do? Please do post your suggestions or questions here, and don't forget to let us know if you've signed the petition.

If you want to help spread the word about this via Twitter, Facebook etc - please feel free to use the hashtag: #breakthechain with #G8 if you want.

Thanks
MNHQ

And yes, I've signed the petition to DC.

What dates next week is the G8 summit meeting ?

What else can we do MNers ?

Bump !

Am sad to see such long gaps between posts on this thread Sad

Surely we can get more than 27 posts for such an important issue, and with the potential to influence decision makers next week - and make a difference in young children's and families lives around the world ?

I wrote about this topic a few years ago and vowed to do something with my letter but didn't get around to doing as much as I should have done. Here it is. I hope it will inspire the world to take action.

MNHQ - For example you could swap this thread with

"Putting on make-up - OK in public ?" in discussions of the day

Or any of the other four vital considerations !!

How about it ?

Hello. And many thanks to all those who are posting, and signing the petition.

Afraid we do have a policy of not putting charity appeals, however pressing and wonderful and worthy, in our Discussions of the Day.

That's purely because we get asked to do this an awful lot but, sadly, there's only limited space and we really don't want to be in a position where we have to choose between charities, or explain to one charity why they didn't get the DOD spot but another very similar charity did.

We have stickied this thread to the top of Active Convos, though, and we have put it in our Mumsnet Latest box over there >>>

OK, what about gently suggesting to people that they pop over here to sign it. Is that OK?

Sure is - as long as you don't pepper hundreds of Talk threads with your gentle suggestions. Smile

If you do, you might annoy others so much, you could actually stop 'em coming over here to sign it, iyswim.

Signed- and I'm afraid profit comes before the easing of human suffering almost every time!

Nice try Helen, but like bubby (I'm guessing) I don't completely buy it.

As in there's no reason you can't prioritise some causes as so important as to merit inclusion in Discussions of the Day. It's just a question of having some discernment and assertiveness. It's your site, you make the rules and call the shots at the end of the day Smile

But glad you've stickied this thread to the top of Active Convos, and put it in Mumsnet Latest. Thank you for doing that ( on behalf of the children of the world who often don't have a voice )

Hoping for a long chain of "signed"s - just like there was on the "I believe you" thread recently.

I'm off to pick my DD up from school now, and will try and leave this thread in peace now, hoping to see it continue from strength to strength ( though I guess some MNers may go straight to signing the letter from the link on the home page too)

If you can't get angry about 300 children dying every hour of hunger around the world what can you get angry about ? Angry Sad

So glad to see everyone's support for this on here - just wish it was everyone

I did my best, unless people are signing and not leaving messages, there is a lot of apathy today.

Yes, rips - I think many people might sign and not necessarily come on here to say they did - I nearly did that myself Smile

I hope so, I have just given it a little nudge.
