UPDATE! 300 children die of hunger, every hour of every day. Can you please help Save The Children's work to stop this - and sign their petition?

Save the Children have asked us if we can help them change the fact that 300 children die of hunger, every hour of every day - even though there's enough food in the world for everyone.

What do you think? There's a petition here which they'd love you to sign - but they also want your thoughts on what they should be telling the G8 (the annual gathering of first world governments), who are meeting next week and actually have the power to change things.

So, if you could change the world so that no child died for lack of food - what would you do? Please do post your suggestions or questions here, and don't forget to let us know if you've signed the petition.

If you want to help spread the word about this via Twitter, Facebook etc - please feel free to use the hashtag: #breakthechain with #G8 if you want.

Thanks
MNHQ

Thank you to everyone who showed they care and is taking whatever action they are able to.

To me, if we can make any difference here, that is really Mumsnet at it's best Smile

Good news! Save the Children have been in touch to let us know that, following the G8, David Cameron has decided to hold a World Hunger Summit here in the UK during the Olympics.

They've sent us a statement from their Chief Exec Justin Forsyth:

"With over a hundred heads of state visiting, the Olympics offer a unique opportunity to leave a global legacy beyond sport. By galvanising other world leaders, the private sector, charities, and the public, the Prime Minister can help save millions of children's lives, who are currently facing a daily battle with hunger. This is a fight the world can win, and this is the time to act"

Thanks so much to everyone who signed and/or spread the word via social media - it really makes a difference.

I once read this somewhere:

God has given MAN enough for his Need,
but there is not enough for his Greed...

Its time the developed world- the G8 leaders and others take notice of the basic human fact that we need to shed our greed, and only then will there be enough for every one's need, no matter where they are born, live or work.

Signed!!

I guess as it's still accepting signatures, and posting them on it's board too, and as the G8 Summit is later this week, it's not too late to add your signature. Get it up to 30, 000 before the summit ?

I have signed. It's hard to comprehend that people are still dying of hunger in this day and age.

Humans have advanced in so many ways, and some of our scientific and technological achievements are startling, yet we still haven't found a resolution to this most basic problem. It's time we made it a priority.
