Yes agree it is the end of the month they must have targets to meet. I never felt we had the "hard sell" but they certainly kept in touch! I'm just pleased because I get the kitchen I wanted in budget. It's a shame that they didn't offer me such good value initially so in that respect I do feel a bit manipulated and actually I think that puts them in a bad light and seem a bit unprofessional, but I got the result I wanted in the end so happy.

We also eventually got the offer of a 40% discount after repeatedly telling Harvey Jones that no, we didn't want to put down a £1000 deposit just yet. Could it be a coincidence it was the end of the month and presumably someone had sales targets to meet?

Unfortunately for them, we'd become so fed up of the hard sell (five calls in two weeks, increasingly desperate to make the sale, going on and on about how great their product was and how poor their competitors' were) that we'd had enough of them and said no.

I originally wanted a Harvey Jones Kitchen but after the design meeting it turned out over budget at £28,000 and that was with £7,000 discount. Went away and looked at Fired Earth, Neptune and a local experienced cabinetmaker and most of them came in at around the £20,000 mark, that was in budget. I was disappointed as I absolutely love Harvey Jones Kitchens but philosophical. Neptune isn't cheap either and the cabinets are made in China so quality, longevity??? Looks great in the showroom but serious concerns there. Using a local cabinet maker can also be very expensive. Well surprise surprise had a phone call from the very nice chap at my local Harvey Jones telling me that they would still love to do my kitchen and they were now offering me 40% off. With a bit of tweaking and compromising (not having baskets and losing a run of draws etc), but still keeping the gorgeous larder cupboard, they managed to get the quote down to less than £18,000 fully fitted and painted and including VAT. I couldn't believe it, so thrilled. Will have to pay a deposit of £1,000 to secure the offer but we can have it whenever we want. Shop around and stick to you budget and you may get the kitchen of your dreams. Its a buyers market out there!

I've just had a Simon Benjamin kitchen fitted to our new extension. It is amazing quality. We went for a very modern style with flat front cupboards, no handles in a gloss finish. I chose the paint colour myself from the Dulux range. The cabinets are made from oak, and this alongside the gloss looks fantastic. I have to stress the craftsmanship of the cabinets - proper joints and really solid.
I looked at Plain English, Harvey Jones and JL of Hungerford. They didnt match the quality and I found the people at Simon Benjamin really pleasant to deal with - I felt like I mattered to them and wasn't just a job number.
I'm having the floor tiled and then Simon is going to photograph our kitchen, so will be on their website soon. Have a look - I highly recommend them.

We got ours designed first by Karen from OnePlan then we got 7 quotes. We didn't actually go with the cheapest one - we went with a Neptune kitchen in the end .Wouldn't swap it for the world.
Plain english was most expensive, then Deverol, then John Lewis, then neptune and the others small independent studios but they didn't have the look we wanted. The nearest was a 'revival' kitchen but it looked tacky.

We are getting a hj kitchen right now. They are good quality furniture but the service and installation through them has not been so good. This maybe because our kitchen consultant is new to the job and was not strong on design. Our mantle measurements were wrong and they tried to correct on site instead of making a new one. Same with having to correct our sink unit which did not work with the sink that they ordered. When you pay our do much money to a big kitchen company you don't expect things like basic measurements to go wrong.

kitchens cost a lot of money. A slightly cheaper one can do the same job and there are imitations
of inframe out there. But if you have the money to spend and like the butt hinges make sure you find a good kitchen consultant that you are comfortable with. Don't be tempted by discounts and sales. Itd all priced in and they cost relatively the same.

I have heard the same about Plain English...

I know a joinery firm in Shoreditch that is launching its kitchen ranges this summer... handmade, no woodchips etc.

If you're happy for it to be photographed for their marketing, it would come at a lower price.

Intrigued that you were not happy with Plain English do tell me more - were they really chip board? All this goes to prove what I thought which is that the fitted kitchen business is a rip off which makes the banking crisis look like petty theft. Think about it.....£45,000 for a load of cupboards!? How many cupboards could you buy (do you need?) for £45,000 in even a very expensive shop and then you could have them fitted all together? Plus as I have discovered it is scientifically proven that the more cupboard storage you have the more useless gadgets you will buy and use once.


We are going for a larder i.e. a tiny room the kitchen with lots of shelves = £1000 which leaves plenty of money for the Lacanche cooker (2nd hand ebay) my own "hand build" cupboards made by local chippy plus polished concrete worktop. that ebay ex display "as new" mega fridge

I would happily pay £45,000 if I thought that I would get £45,000 of value for my money but in reality you are paying for their poncy showroom in Marylebone high street plus being patronised by their snotty staff.

We bought a bespoke shaker style painted kitchen from Woodworks of Lewes //www.woodworkslewes.com. It is the most beautiful and functional room in the house now. They make everything by hand and every piece is bespoke. Couldn't recommend them enough! Our kitchen cost £35K but they start around 25K and are the best quality you could ever wish for with such attention to detail and such lovely people too. Previously we bought a Plain English in our last house and it wasn't that great, quality was pretty poor and the doors quite flimsy with chipboard carcases. If you're Sussex based then I'd suggest Woodworks.

Granite is white and we love it!

We are mid way through buying a Harvey Jones kitchen. We are very impressed by them so far. Fab design, great planning and they guide you through the whole process. It's costing a lot, but it is my first ever kitchen that's been chosen by me, I have waited a long time!
We are going for grey shaker cupboards, a light granite and s steel appliances, ooh and bravely a wooden floor (sick to death of ceramic tiles!)

After a lot of research I went with www.handmadekitchens-direct.co.uk/. It has been delivered and fitted, but still to be painted (by me!) and the fitter commented on how high quality it was. All made to exact measurements .
